Chapter 7: The Brother I Never Knew

I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.

Thomas Carter.

The man who raised me.

The man who lied to me.

Standing beside a stranger who had my eyes.

My brother.

Lucas.

A person who had existed my entire life and somehow never existed at all.

I looked at Emily.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Before everything happened.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, Emily. You disappeared. You left me alone with a four-year-old child who asked every night when her mother was coming home.””

The pain on her face was immediate.

But I couldn’t stop.

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“I blamed myself.””

“I know.””

“I thought I failed you.””

Emily stepped closer.

“I know, Daniel.””

Her voice broke.

“Because I watched.””

That sentence stopped me.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I watched you from a distance.””

The anger inside me shifted into confusion.

“You were watching us?””

“I had no choice.””

“Why?””

“Because every time I tried to come back, someone stopped me.””

I looked at Officer Reed.

He had returned from searching for Thomas.

His expression was serious.

“He’s gone.””

Nobody needed to ask who he meant.

I looked back at Emily.

“Who stopped you?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Lucas.””

The name felt strange.

A brother.

A stranger.

A ghost.

“Why?””

Emily walked toward the table and picked up the photograph.

“Because Lucas believes your father saved him.””

I frowned.

“Saved him?””

She nodded.

“Lucas grew up believing everyone abandoned him.””

I stared at the picture.

“He was my father’s son.””

“Yes.””

“So why hide him?””

Emily’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Because Thomas didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

“Because Lucas was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She looked at me.

“That your father’s entire life was built on lies.””

I waited.

Emily took a deep breath.

“Your father didn’t have another family because he was in love with someone else.””

“Then why?””

“Because he was trying to protect his reputation.””

The words felt empty.

Too simple.

“What does that mean?””

Emily looked at Lily.

“Your father’s company was failing.””

I frowned.

“My father was wealthy.””

“That’s what everyone thought.””

She opened one of the files from the storage room.

Inside were financial records.

Hidden accounts.

Transfers.

Names.

“He was losing everything.””

I scanned the pages.

My father had always been the picture of success.

A powerful businessman.

A respected man.

But these documents showed something else.

Desperation.

“He created another identity,” Emily continued.

“Lucas?””

She nodded.

“Thomas had a relationship before your mother. When Lucas was born, Thomas wanted nothing to do with him.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why was he with him now?””

“Because Lucas became useful.””

The room became silent.

“Useful how?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Lucas was the only person who knew what Thomas had done.””

“What did he do?””

Before she could answer, Officer Reed interrupted.

“We need to move.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He held up his phone.

“We traced the message.””

“And?””

“It came from a location.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He looked at me.

“The old Carter family house.””

I froze.

The house that burned down.

The house where my father supposedly died.

The house Emily had supposedly hidden in.

“Impossible.””

Officer Reed shook his head.

“That’s what I thought.””

Emily immediately grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“We can’t go there.””

“Why?””

Her face went pale.

“Because that’s where Thomas wants you.””

“And?””

“And because Lucas will be waiting.””

I stared at her.

“Maybe I need answers.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Emily looked toward Lily.

“Thomas doesn’t want to hurt you.””

“Then what does he want?””

Her voice dropped.

“He wants you to become him.””

The words chilled me.

“What?””

“He spent years trying to prove that people are controlled by their blood.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

My reason for everything.

“He thinks Lucas became like him because of genetics.””

I shook my head.

“That’s insane.””

“Yes.””

Emily nodded.

“But he believes it.””

A memory surfaced.

My father sitting across from me when I was twenty.

Angry.

Disappointed.

“You’re too soft, Daniel.””

I remembered those words.

“You care too much about what people think.””

I had laughed.

I thought he was joking.

Now I wondered if he had been training me.

Teaching me.

Trying to shape me.

“He wanted to create a perfect son,” Emily said.

I looked at her.

“And he failed.””

She nodded.

“He thought Lucas was too emotional.””

“And me?””

“You were too kind.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded exactly like my father.

I picked up the photograph again.

Lucas.

My brother.

The man who had helped my father hide.

“Why did he come back now?””

Emily looked at the picture.

“Because of Lily.””

I felt my body tense.

“What about her?””

“Thomas believes she is the future.””

I stared at her.

“She’s four years old.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because he believes children can be shaped before they know who they are.””

My hands curled into fists.

“No.””

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

“No one touches my daughter.””

“I know.””

“No one decides what she becomes.””

“I know.””

I looked toward Lily.

She was sitting quietly with her stuffed rabbit.

Listening.

Understanding more than a child should.

I walked over and knelt beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked at me.

“Are you finding Grandpa?””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked sad.

“Mommy said Grandpa was not always bad.””

I turned toward Emily.

She looked surprised.

“Lily, what did Mommy tell you?””

My daughter looked down.

“She said Grandpa loved Daddy.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But confusion.

Because the world wasn’t as simple as I wanted it to be.

Good people could make mistakes.

Bad people could pretend to love.

And sometimes the truth lived somewhere in between.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, it wasn’t a threat.

It was from Thomas.

*Daniel, come alone.*

Then another message appeared.

*Your brother wants to meet you.*

Then a final one.

*He wants to tell you what your mother really did.*

I looked at Emily.

“What does that mean?””

She went completely still.

“What?””

“My mother.””

Emily’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Daniel, don’t listen.””

“Why?””

“Because Lucas will tell you a story.””

“What story?””

She whispered:

“The story Thomas taught him.””

I looked at the message again.

My brother wanted to meet me.

The man who shared my blood.

The man who knew the secrets my father buried.

A part of me wanted to believe he could explain everything.

Another part of me remembered the last eight months.

Everyone who had explanations.

Everyone who had secrets.

Everyone who had lied.

Officer Reed stepped forward.

“We go together.””

I nodded.

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“If you see Lucas…”

“What?””

“Remember one thing.””

“What?””

She swallowed.

“He spent his whole life trying to be loved by a father who never chose him.””

I didn’t know why she said that.

Not until we arrived.

The old Carter house stood at the edge of the property.

Exactly as I remembered.

Burned walls.

Broken windows.

A place everyone thought was abandoned.

But tonight…

There were lights inside.

Someone had been living there.

Officer Reed moved ahead.

I held Lily close.

Emily walked beside me.

The front door opened slowly.

A man stepped out.

Same eyes as mine.

Same blood.

A lifetime of missing pieces.

Lucas looked at me.

And the first thing he said was not hello.

It was:

“You have no idea what your father did to our mother.””

I froze.

Because behind him, inside the house…

I saw a wall covered with photographs.

Not of me.

Not of Lily.

May you like

Of my mother.

And every photograph was taken after the day she supposedly died.
