Chapter 2: The Man Who Buried My Name
Daniel’s silence was the answer I never wanted.
The airport lights still shone above us. The announcements still echoed from the speakers. Somewhere nearby, a child laughed while a couple hugged goodbye before boarding a flight.
The world continued.
Mine had stopped.
I held his phone in my hand, staring at the words that had rearranged my entire existence.
*CLAIRE CARTER HAS BEEN LOCATED.*
Not found.
Not contacted.
Located.
Like I was a missing person.
Like I was something someone had been searching for.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who was looking for me?””
His eyes flicked toward the phone.
“Claire, give me the phone.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t angry.
It was steady.
The kind of steady that comes when you finally stop hoping someone will tell you the truth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Please.””
I backed away.
“Three minutes ago, I thought I caught my husband cheating on me.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Now I’m standing here holding evidence that my husband erased my identity.””
“Claire—”
“Which one is it, Daniel?””
He stopped.
“Were you cheating on me?””
A long pause.
Then I asked the question that hurt more.
“Or were you planning something worse?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The hesitation.
The tiny moment where he considered what lie would work best.
That was when I knew.
The man I married was still standing in front of me.
But I didn’t know him anymore.
Nia looked between us.
“I need to understand something.””
Her voice trembled.
Daniel turned.
“Nia, don’t.””
She ignored him.
“You told me your wife died.””
I looked at her.
She looked ashamed.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost laughed.
Sorry.
That word felt too small.
“Did you know he was married?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“I knew he was married.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Nia.””
She shook her head.
“No, Daniel. She deserves to know.””
The confidence in her voice surprised me.
“I thought you were separated,” Nia continued.
“You told me Claire had been gone for years. You told me there was paperwork. You told me everyone knew.””
My stomach twisted.
“Everyone?””
Nia nodded slowly.
“He showed me documents.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Nia, stop talking.””
She looked at him with disbelief.
“You told me she died.””
The airport suddenly felt colder.
I turned back to Daniel.
“What documents?””
He didn’t answer.
“What documents, Daniel?””
His jaw clenched.
“Not here.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to choose where I learn why you killed me on paper.””
The words left my mouth before I realized I had said them.
Killed me.
Nia covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
And that reaction terrified me.
Because innocent people say, “That’s crazy.””
They don’t look like they’ve been caught.
A security announcement played overhead.
Passengers began lining up near the gate.
Daniel glanced toward the boarding area.
That tiny movement told me everything.
He was still thinking about leaving.
After all of this.
He was still thinking about getting on that plane.
“You were going to leave.””
He looked back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I held up the tickets.
“Two one-way tickets. One for you. One with my name.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t just running away.””
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“What were you going to do with my ticket?””
He said nothing.
Nia whispered, “Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What was the plan?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You were traveling with him.””
“I thought I was starting a new life.””
Her voice cracked.
“I didn’t know I was part of this.””
Daniel suddenly grabbed his suitcase.
“We need to go.””
I stepped in front of him.
“No.””
People nearby started looking over.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Claire, listen carefully.””
That sentence.
The way he said it.
Not like a husband.
Like a doctor explaining something to a patient.
Controlled.
Cold.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“Then explain.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“You created a death certificate with my name on it.””
His eyes moved away.
“I had no choice.””
The words hit harder than any confession.
Because people only say “I had no choice” when they know they did something unforgivable.
I lowered my voice.
“What happened on April 17th, 2023?””
Daniel froze.
I watched the fear return.
The date.
He knew that date.
“Why that day?””
He looked at me.
“Where did you get that?””
“It’s on your phone.””
“That record wasn’t supposed to be there.””
My heartbeat quickened.
“Whose record was it supposed to be?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Nia stepped closer.
“Daniel, what are you hiding?””
He looked at both of us.
And for a second, I saw something unexpected.
Not anger.
Not panic.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“I can’t explain this here.””
I shook my head.
“You’ve been saying that since I walked up.””
I unlocked his phone.
The screen was still open.
There were messages.
Hundreds of them.
I scrolled.
My hands went cold.
Most were from numbers I didn’t recognize.
But one name appeared again and again.
*Evelyn Ross.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is Evelyn Ross?””
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But enough.
“You don’t need to know.””
I laughed softly.
“That’s your answer?””
I tapped the name.
A message thread opened.
The newest message was from that morning.
*Evelyn: She found you. You need to leave immediately.*
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Daniel.
“She knew I was coming.””
Silence.
“She knew.””
Daniel reached for the phone.
I moved it away.
“Who is she?””
No answer.
“Who is Evelyn Ross?””
Nia suddenly whispered something.
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I’ve heard that name.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Nia.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“I’ve heard you say it when you thought I was asleep.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What did he say?””
Nia swallowed.
“He said if Evelyn found out Claire was still alive, everything would collapse.””
The airport noise disappeared.
Everything collapsed.
That was what Daniel was afraid of.
Not losing me.
Not hurting me.
Losing whatever secret he had built.
I stared at him.
“Who is Evelyn?””
Daniel looked at the departure gate.
Then at me.
Then at the phone.
Finally, he whispered:
“She’s the reason you’re supposed to be dead.””
The words hung between us.
A few seconds passed.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Daniel saw the screen.
And all the color drained from his face.
“Don’t answer that.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
His voice dropped.
“Because if she knows you’re alive…”
The phone kept ringing.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t move.
“Because she won’t stop until you disappear again.””
The call ended.
Before I could speak, a voicemail notification appeared.
One new message.
I pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the air.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
“Claire Carter… if you’re hearing this, then Daniel failed.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked like a man watching a disaster he couldn’t prevent.
The woman continued.
“You have exactly twenty-four hours to find out what happened on April 17th.””
A pause.
Then the voice said something that made my blood turn cold.
“Because the woman who died that day wasn’t you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
And whispered:
“Oh no.””
May you like
The voicemail continued.
“And Claire… ask your husband who he buried instead.””
