Chapter 9: The Girl Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

I wish I could say the world stopped when she said it.

I wish I could say I screamed.

That I collapsed.

That I demanded answers immediately.

But the truth was stranger.

I felt nothing.

For a few seconds, my mind simply refused to accept the words.

*You’re not the original.*

They floated in the hallway between us.

A sentence so impossible that my brain treated it like a language I didn’t understand.

I looked at Daniel.

Then my mother.

Then my father.

Waiting for someone to laugh.

Waiting for someone to say it was a trick.

Nobody did.

The woman standing in front of me watched my confusion with a sadness that almost looked like love.

Almost.

“Who are you?””

My voice barely came out.

She took a slow breath.

“My name is Dr. Rebecca Lane.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way everyone reacted did.

My mother looked away.

My father’s jaw tightened.

Daniel went completely still.

“You know her,” I whispered.

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt endless.

“Of course you do.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right.””

His expression broke.

But I turned away.

I was tired of seeing people hurt by the consequences of things they chose to do.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“I know this is difficult.””

I laughed softly.

“Difficult?””

I pointed at myself.

“I just found out my husband lied about my death, my parents hid my entire existence, and someone is telling me I’m not even the person I thought I was.””

My voice cracked.

“And you call it difficult?””

Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.

“I call it cruel.””

That caught me off guard.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She looked guilty.

“You know something,” I said.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at my father.

“James knows.””

My father looked away.

“Tell her.””

He didn’t move.

“James.””

My mother’s voice was quiet.

“Enough secrets.””

Finally, my father spoke.

“Claire was born in 1995.””

I frowned.

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were born in 1995.””

The words made no sense.

“That’s what I said.””

He looked at Rebecca.

“Tell her.””

Rebecca nodded.

“The child born in 1995 was taken from the hospital before the official records were completed.””

My heart began racing.

“No.””

“She was replaced.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at me.

“You were that replacement.””

The hallway seemed to move.

I grabbed the wall.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire.””

I pushed him away.

“No.””

My mother started crying.

I had never seen her cry.

Not when my father supposedly died.

Not when Maya died.

Not ever.

And somehow that made it worse.

“You all knew.””

Nobody answered.

“You all knew I wasn’t…”

I couldn’t finish the sentence.

Rebecca did.

“Your memories were created to match the identity.””

I stared at her.

“Created?””

She nodded.

“The program wasn’t just about changing records.””

My stomach turned.

“It was about creating replacements.””

I looked at Daniel.

“My marriage?””

He looked devastated.

“Real.””

“How?””

“Because I loved you.””

The answer came instantly.

I almost hated him for that.

Almost.

“Then what am I?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re Claire.””

“But not the original.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“You are not a fake.””

I looked at her.

“That’s easy for you to say.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“It isn’t.””

She looked at me carefully.

“Because I was the one who gave you those memories.””

Silence.

“You.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I was assigned to make sure the replacement survived.””

My hands shook.

“So you made me.””

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“I protected you.””

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

She lowered her eyes.

“But I failed you.””

The hallway went silent.

“Why?””

Rebecca looked at my father.

“Because James changed the plan.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“I saved her.””

“You manipulated her.””

“I kept her alive.””

“You erased who she was.””

My mother stepped between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice trembled.

“Claire doesn’t need another fight.””

She looked at me.

“She needs the truth.””

I stared at her.

“For once.””

She nodded.

“For once.””

My mother sat against the wall.

And for the first time, she looked like a person.

Not a mastermind.

Not someone with answers.

Just a broken woman.

“The original Claire died.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Before you were transferred.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who killed her?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca said:

“No one.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“The original Claire was never meant to survive.””

I didn’t understand.

“She was sick.””

My father continued.

“Terminal illness.””

The words hit me.

“You replaced a dying child?””

“No.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“That was the original purpose.””

She looked at me.

“The program was supposed to save children with no chance of survival.””

My breathing slowed.

“So I was…”

“A medical miracle,” Rebecca whispered.

I stared.

“But then?””

My mother answered.

“Then people realized they could use it for power.””

The original purpose became corruption.

The thing that was supposed to save people became a machine that erased them.

Maya discovered it.

Maya tried to expose it.

Maya died.

I looked at Daniel.

“And you knew?””

His eyes filled.

“I knew parts.””

“What parts?””

He hesitated.

“I knew your memories had been altered.””

The hallway went silent.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before our wedding.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was almost physical.

“Why did you marry me?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I looked at him.

“Not the person you thought I was?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You.””

That was the hardest thing to hear.

Because I believed him.

And I hated that I believed him.

Rebecca suddenly looked toward the end of the hallway.

“We need to go.””

Nobody moved.

“Why?””

Her face changed.

“Because they found us.””

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was approaching.

My father took the storage drive from his pocket.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“This contains everything.””

“Everything?””

“The original records.””

He handed it to me.

My fingers touched the drive.

And immediately, my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown sender.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You want the truth? Ask Daniel who approved your transfer.*

I looked up.

Daniel saw my face.

“What?””

I turned the screen toward him.

The color drained from his face.

“Claire…”

“Who approved it?””

Nobody spoke.

My father closed his eyes.

My mother looked terrified.

Rebecca whispered:

“He didn’t tell you.””

I stared at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

He looked broken.

“Claire…”

“Tell me.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Your transfer wasn’t approved by your parents.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who?””

He looked at me.

And the answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“Maya.””

I froze.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Your sister was the one who chose you.””

I shook my head.

“Maya would never.””

“She did.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the storage drive.

“Because she knew the original Claire was already gone.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“And she knew you needed a chance to live.””

I looked down.

At the drive.

At the proof of a life I never knew existed.

Then another message appeared.

This time with an attachment.

A video.

The title:

*MAYA CARTER — FINAL RECORDING.*

I pressed play.

The screen showed my sister.

Older.

Tired.

Scared.

But alive.

For a moment, I forgot everything.

“Maya…”

Her eyes looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, Claire, then they failed.””

My heart broke.

She continued:

“I need you to know one thing.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were never a replacement.””

I covered my mouth.

“You were my sister.””

Everyone went silent.

Maya looked away from the camera.

“Daniel, if you’re there…”

Daniel froze.

“Tell her the truth.””

A pause.

Then Maya said:

“You didn’t save Claire because you were forced to.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You saved her because you chose her.””

The video glitched.

Then Maya’s final words appeared.

“Claire…”

The screen went black.

“Find out what happened to the real me.””

I stared at the blank screen.

Then I heard footsteps stop behind us.

A voice spoke.

A voice I knew.

A voice from my memories.

“Claire.””

I turned.

And saw Maya standing there.

Alive.

But her eyes were filled with tears.

Because she wasn’t looking at me like a stranger.

She was looking at me like family.

May you like

And she whispered:

“I’m sorry I had to let you believe I was dead.””
