Chapter 3: The Woman Buried in My Place
For three seconds after the voicemail ended, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not Nia.
The airport continued around us, completely unaware that three people were standing in the middle of a departure terminal surrounded by a secret that could destroy all of them.
I replayed the voicemail.
The woman’s voice came through again.
“Claire Carter… if you’re hearing this, then Daniel failed.””
My hand shook slightly.
“You have exactly twenty-four hours to find out what happened on April 17th.””
Then the sentence that made my entire body go numb.
“The woman who died that day wasn’t you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who was it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes stayed on the floor.
“Who was buried with my name?””
His silence was unbearable.
I grabbed his arm.
“Answer me.””
People nearby glanced over.
A family walking past slowed down, sensing the tension.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
I almost smiled.
Again.
That same excuse.
Not here.
Not now.
Not yet.
Every answer had a locked door behind it.
“You keep saying that like there’s a place where this becomes less horrifying.””
His expression tightened.
“Claire, I’m trying to keep you safe.””
I pulled my arm away.
“No.””
My voice came out sharper.
“You’re trying to keep yourself safe.””
Nia stood a few feet away, looking between us.
She looked like someone who had just discovered she was a character in a story she never agreed to be part of.
“I need to leave.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“No.””
Her eyes widened.
“Excuse me?””
“You can’t go.””
The fear on her face changed.
Not confusion.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“You’re telling me I can’t leave?””
Daniel immediately softened his voice.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“It sounded exactly like what you meant.””
I watched him carefully.
The old Daniel would have noticed my expression.
The old Daniel would have reached for my hand.
The old Daniel would have whispered that everything was okay.
This Daniel was calculating.
Measuring.
Trying to control the situation.
I hated that I could still see the man I loved hiding somewhere underneath the person standing in front of me.
Nia picked up her bag.
“I’m done.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Nia, listen.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You told me Claire was dead.””
“I was trying to explain.””
“You showed me a death certificate.””
My breath caught.
Daniel looked at her.
“You have no idea what you saw.””
“Then tell me.””
She pointed at him.
“Tell both of us.””
The airport announcement interrupted.
“Final boarding call for Flight 817 to Paris.””
Daniel looked toward the gate.
Then back at us.
The decision flashed across his face.
He was considering it.
He was actually considering leaving.
I stepped closer.
“You were going to get on that plane.””
“No.””
“You were.””
“I wasn’t leaving you.””
I stared at him.
“You had a one-way ticket.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I turned toward Nia.
“Did you know where you were going?””
She nodded slowly.
“Paris.””
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“Because Daniel said we could start over.””
The words landed like a slap.
Start over.
While I was still alive.
While I was still his wife.
I looked at Daniel.
“How long?””
He didn’t respond.
“How long were you planning this?””
“Claire—”
“How long?””
His shoulders dropped slightly.
“Six months.””
The answer hurt.
Not because of the number.
Because he said it so quietly.
Like he knew there was no point lying anymore.
Six months.
Six months of dinners.
Six months of sleeping beside me.
Six months of telling me he loved me.
While secretly preparing an escape.
I felt something inside me crack.
“Did you ever love me?””
Daniel looked up.
For the first time, he looked genuinely hurt.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“I loved you.””
I laughed softly.
“Then why did you kill me?””
His face changed.
And I knew.
That was the question he had been avoiding.
Not the affair.
Not Paris.
Not Nia.
That.
Why did you kill me?
Daniel looked around.
Then whispered:
“Because you were supposed to disappear.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“Supposed to?””
He closed his eyes.
“Claire, three years ago, you found something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You don’t remember?””
The question confused me.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel stared at me.
“You really don’t remember.””
It wasn’t relief on his face.
It was fear.
“What happened three years ago?””
He hesitated.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A message.
All three of us looked at it.
Daniel didn’t touch it.
I did.
The message was from Evelyn Ross.
*You have until midnight. Tell Claire everything before I do.*
Below it was a photograph.
I opened it.
My breath disappeared.
It was a picture of me.
Three years earlier.
I was standing outside a building I didn’t recognize.
I was holding a folder.
And next to me was a woman.
A woman whose face was blurred.
But the name beneath the image was clear.
*Dr. Maya Carter.*
My hand went cold.
Maya.
I knew that name.
I had spent years trying to forget it.
Daniel noticed my expression.
“You remember her.””
I looked at him.
“My sister.””
He nodded.
My heartbeat became louder.
Maya Carter.
My older sister.
A woman who had died three years ago.
A woman whose death had destroyed my family.
A woman everyone said was killed in a tragic car accident.
“What does Maya have to do with this?””
Daniel looked away.
“Everything.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
His silence confirmed it.
“You knew something about Maya’s death.””
“Claire—”
“You knew.””
My voice broke.
“You let me grieve my sister while you were hiding something.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to protect you from the truth.””
“The truth?””
I stepped closer.
“The truth is that my husband lied about my death, had an affair, tried to flee the country, and somehow my sister is connected to all of it.””
I held up the phone.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“Three years ago, Maya discovered a patient file.””
“What patient file?””
He looked at me.
“One that connected a doctor at my hospital to illegal experiments.””
My skin prickled.
“You?””
Daniel shook his head quickly.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Almost rehearsed.
“Then who?””
He didn’t answer.
I took a step back.
“Daniel.””
His eyes met mine.
“The person who ordered Maya’s death.””
Silence.
“And the person who created your fake death record…”
He swallowed.
“…is the same person.””
I felt dizzy.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the airport exit.
Like he knew we were running out of time.
Then he whispered:
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“No.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“She was never gone.””
The world felt unreal.
My mother had died when I was twenty.
At least, that was what I had been told.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“Your mother has been alive this entire time.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“She changed her identity.””
“No.””
“She’s Evelyn Ross.””
My fingers went numb.
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Evelyn Ross.
The woman who knew I was alive.
The woman who had been watching.
The woman who said Daniel failed.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew my mother was alive?””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Since before we got married.””
The betrayal felt bigger than the airport.
Bigger than the affair.
Bigger than the death record.
Because Daniel hadn’t just hidden a secret.
He had hidden my entire family from me.
Then Nia suddenly gasped.
“What?””
We both turned.
She was staring at her phone.
Her face had gone white.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She slowly lifted the screen.
“I just received an email.””
I walked toward her.
“What does it say?””
Her hand trembled as she turned the phone around.
There was one sentence.
One sentence that made Daniel step backward.
*The replacement body has been identified.*
Below it was a name.
Not Maya.
Not Evelyn.
Not Daniel.
Mine.
Claire Carter.
And underneath:
*STATUS: ALIVE.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What replacement body?””
He didn’t answer.
Then the airport doors opened behind us.
A woman walked inside.
A woman wearing a long black coat.
A woman I hadn’t seen in fifteen years.
But I knew her instantly.
My mother.
She looked directly at me.
And smiled.
“Hello, Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
She glanced at Daniel.
May you like
Then back at me.
“But now you finally know why you were never supposed to survive.””
