Chapter 5: The File Hidden Under My Name

The security officer kept saying my name.

“Claire Carter?””

His voice was calm.

Professional.

Almost too calm.

But I couldn’t move.

Because I was standing between three people who had each lied to me in a different way.

My husband.

My mother.

And a stranger in a uniform who somehow knew I was the target of a security search before I even understood why.

The officer approached.

“Ma’am, we need you to come with us.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

I looked at my mother.

She looked ready to run.

That alone terrified me.

My mother had spent fifteen years hiding from the world.

She had changed her identity.

She had convinced everyone she was gone.

But now, when security called my name, she looked afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“Who are you?”” I asked the officer.

He stopped.

“My name is Officer Bennett.””

“Why are you looking for me?””

His expression changed slightly.

Like he had expected me to ask.

“Because there has been a report involving your identity.””

My fingers tightened around Maya’s envelope.

“What report?””

He glanced around.

“Not here.””

I almost laughed.

Not here.

That phrase had become the soundtrack of my entire marriage.

Everyone knew something.

Nobody wanted to tell me.

Officer Bennett reached for his radio.

“Target confirmed.””

My stomach dropped.

Target.

Not passenger.

Not witness.

Target.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She hasn’t done anything wrong.””

The officer looked at him.

“And you are?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

I turned toward him.

“Go ahead.””

His eyes met mine.

“Daniel Carter. Her husband.””

The officer’s expression changed.

Not recognition.

Concern.

That was worse.

“Dr. Carter?””

Daniel nodded.

Officer Bennett looked between us.

“Interesting.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he spoke into his radio again.

“Confirming both identities.””

Both.

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

The officer looked at me.

“Ma’am, there appears to be a discrepancy.””

“What discrepancy?””

He lowered his voice.

“According to our records, you are deceased.””

The words still hurt.

Even after everything.

Even after hearing it before.

Because there was something uniquely horrifying about a stranger saying it like it was a fact.

Like my existence was a mistake.

I looked at Daniel.

Then my mother.

Neither corrected him.

“Show me.””

Officer Bennett hesitated.

“Ma’am—”

“Show me.””

Something in my voice made him stop arguing.

He pulled out a tablet.

I saw the screen.

My photograph.

My full name.

My birthday.

My address.

Everything.

Then the status.

*DECEASED.*

Date of death:

April 17, 2023.

I felt dizzy.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer studied my face.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

My mother stepped forward.

“We need to leave.””

Officer Bennett immediately turned toward her.

“You’re not authorized to interfere.””

My mother froze.

I noticed.

The officer knew her.

Not as my mother.

As someone else.

“Evelyn Ross,” he said.

My mother’s face changed.

“How do you know that name?””

The officer didn’t answer.

Daniel whispered:

“Oh no.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked toward the exits.

“She found us.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, every phone around us started buzzing.

Mine.

Daniel’s.

Nia’s.

Even the officer’s.

Hundreds of screens lighting up at the same time.

People looked down in confusion.

A notification appeared on mine.

*NEW DOCUMENT SHARED.*

No sender.

Just a file.

The title:

*CLAIRE CARTER — ORIGINAL IDENTITY RECORD.*

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The first page was my birth certificate.

Normal.

The second page was a medical record.

Normal.

The third page made my blood run cold.

It was a photograph.

A hospital photograph.

A baby.

And underneath:

*SUBJECT: CLAIRE CARTER*

*GENETIC MATCH: 99.9%*

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

I scrolled.

The next page was a report.

A report dated twenty-eight years earlier.

My birth year.

The title:

*FAMILY REPLACEMENT PROGRAM — SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER.*

I stopped breathing.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my mother.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No more secrets.””

My voice cracked.

“You all keep acting like I’m too fragile for the truth.””

I held up the tablet.

“Then stop protecting me.””

Silence.

Finally, my mother spoke.

“Your birth was not what you were told.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You were born as part of an investigation.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

She ignored him.

“You were never supposed to know.””

“Know what?””

She looked at me.

“That the people who raised you were not the only ones who had access to you.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

She swallowed.

“When you were born, there was another baby.””

The world went quiet.

“What?””

“Another child.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My mother’s voice became softer.

“A child who was supposed to replace you.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

And that broke something inside me.

Because Daniel knew.

“You knew this.””

His silence answered.

“How long?””

“Claire…”

“How long?””

He whispered:

“Before we got married.””

I felt tears forming.

“You knew my entire life was built on a lie.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I turned away.

“I’m tired of being protected.””

Nia suddenly spoke.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held her phone.

Her face was pale.

“I found something.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Before we came to the airport, I downloaded the files from Daniel’s laptop.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You did what?””

Nia stepped back.

“I thought he was hiding money. I didn’t know…”

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know it was this.””

She opened another document.

A list of names.

Hundreds of names.

Each with dates.

Each with statuses.

I scanned the page.

Then stopped.

One name.

Near the bottom.

A name I recognized.

*MAYA CARTER.*

Beside it:

*TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

My vision blurred.

“Maya wasn’t killed.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

“My sister wasn’t killed.””

Daniel’s face broke.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I thought she died.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She didn’t.””

The words came quietly.

“She was taken.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Taken by who?””

My mother looked at the security officer.

Officer Bennett looked away.

That told me everything.

He knew.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time from the unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Claire, if you are reading this, Daniel has already chosen who to sacrifice.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

He stared at my phone.

Then his own phone rang.

The screen showed one name.

*EVELYN ROSS.*

My mother’s phone.

Same name.

Same caller.

All three of us looked at each other.

Someone was calling all of us.

At the same time.

Daniel answered first.

A voice came through the speaker.

A voice I had heard before.

The woman from the voicemail.

Calm.

Cold.

Certain.

“Daniel.””

He froze.

“Tell Claire the truth.””

Nobody moved.

Then the voice continued.

“Tell her why you chose her instead of Maya.””

Daniel’s face drained.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

The voice spoke again.

“Claire…”

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your husband why he saved you and let your sister die.””

The call ended.

I stared at Daniel.

My entire body went cold.

Because for the first time…

May you like

I wasn’t wondering what Daniel had hidden from me.

I was wondering what he had done.
