Chapter 13: The Daughter Who Never Existed
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood Thomas.
"Ethan Hale?"" I repeated.
"You just told us he was Robert's son.""
"He is Robert's legal son," Thomas replied, his voice barely audible.
"But the judge's recording suggests something else.""
My sister released my hand.
"No," she whispered.
"No more secrets. No more documents that tell us our lives were lies. Someone needs to explain what actually happened.""
Thomas nodded slowly.
"You're right.""
He placed the notebook on the table and opened it to the page marked with the red ribbon.
"The Northbridge experiment began as a private fertility study funded by Robert Hale. The stated purpose was to investigate whether genetic material from different donors could be used to create viable embryos for couples struggling to conceive.""
Michael shook his head.
"That was the cover story.""
Thomas looked at him.
"You knew?""
"I knew something was wrong. I discovered that the clinic was creating embryos without the donors' informed consent. They were using genetic material for purposes the donors had never approved.""
"Including yours," I said.
Michael nodded.
"I donated genetic material years before I met Denise. I believed it was being used for legitimate medical research. Later, when I began investigating Robert's company, I discovered that some of those samples had been transferred into private fertility arrangements.""
Denise sat down heavily.
"Then the girls weren't supposed to be born together?""
"They weren't supposed to be born at all under those circumstances," Michael said.
"At least, not according to the agreements we were given.""
My sister pressed her hands against her temples.
"Then why were we switched?""
Thomas drew a breath.
"Because Robert discovered that one of the embryos created through the program had been implanted without his authorization. He believed the child might carry genetic information connected to a medical condition in his family. He wanted the child identified and protected.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"Robert wanted control. He called it protection because that sounded better.""
"Both things can be true," Thomas said.
"Robert feared the research would become public. He also feared that someone would use the children to gain control of his estate.""
I stared at the notebook.
"And Ethan?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Ethan was not biologically related to Robert.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
"Then who was his father?""
"We don't know for certain. Robert's wife, Victoria, had undergone fertility treatment years earlier. The family believed Robert was Ethan's biological father. But after the Northbridge investigation began, Robert discovered that his own genetic material might not have been used in the procedure.""
"You're saying Ethan could have been created through the same program?""
"Yes.""
Michael leaned against the wall.
"Robert found out that someone had used genetic material from another donor in Victoria's treatment. He suspected the clinic had altered the records. Instead of exposing the scandal immediately, he tried to control it.""
"And the inheritance?"" I asked.
Thomas opened another document.
"Robert's original estate plan was written before Ethan was born. It included a provision that any child proven to be his biological descendant could inherit a controlling interest in the family companies. When Ethan learned he might not qualify, he began searching for a way to ensure he would inherit regardless.""
My sister's face went pale.
"So he wanted one of us to be declared his father's daughter, even if it wasn't true?""
"More than that," Thomas said.
"The original agreement contained a clause stating that the beneficiary would be selected through a confidential genetic procedure. If the child's identity was challenged, the estate would remain under court supervision until the dispute was resolved.""
I remembered Ethan's expression when he had been arrested.
He hadn't looked like a man who had lost.
He had looked like someone who knew we were still missing something.
"Then the recording was designed to confuse us," I said.
"If Ethan wasn't Robert's biological son, why would he want one of us to inherit?""
"Because the will gave the selected beneficiary control of the voting shares," Thomas replied.
"Ethan believed he could manipulate that person into transferring the shares to him once she reached adulthood.""
My sister stared at him.
"So we were never supposed to inherit the money. We were supposed to be his puppets.""
"That appears to have been his intention.""
"And the baby swap?""
Thomas turned to Michael.
Michael spoke quietly.
"Someone selected one of the girls before birth and designated her as the future beneficiary. Then someone changed the records to make it appear that the selected child was Robert's biological daughter.""
I felt sick.
"Who selected her?""
Michael's gaze shifted to Thomas.
Thomas looked down.
"I did.""
Denise rose so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.
"You?""
"I was twenty-six. I was a junior attorney assigned to the estate. Robert told me that he had discovered a serious discrepancy in the clinic's genetic records. He said he needed someone to prepare a sealed guardianship agreement.""
"And you agreed to separate two newborn babies?"" Denise demanded.
"I was told one child was in immediate danger. I was told the transfer would be temporary.""
"That's what everyone says!"" Denise shouted.
"Temporary. Protection. A mistake. And while you were all protecting yourselves, two girls grew up without knowing their own families!""
Thomas accepted the accusation without defending himself.
"I deserve that.""
"More than that," Denise replied.
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell us the truth when we first met?""
"Because I had spent seventeen years believing that disclosing the agreement would endanger you. When the false DNA report appeared, I realized someone was attempting to reopen the case. I thought I could uncover the truth without exposing either of you to the people involved.""
"You thought wrong.""
"Yes.""
I turned toward Michael.
"Which baby did Thomas choose?""
Michael opened the notebook again.
"That's the question we need to answer.""
He pointed to a line beneath the original transfer order.
*DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY: CHILD B.*
Below it was a handwritten note.
*Biological identification to remain concealed until age seventeen.*
My sister stepped forward.
"Child B was me.""
Thomas nodded.
"According to the transfer order, yes.""
"So I was the child selected to inherit.""
"Yes.""
She looked at Robert's estate documents.
"Then why did Ethan keep me hidden?""
"Because he needed you to remain alive but legally unidentifiable until the inheritance could be transferred," Thomas explained.
"Once you turned seventeen, he intended to present you as Robert's biological daughter, gain control over your decisions, and eventually secure the shares.""
My sister laughed without humor.
"He kept me locked in that clinic so he could steal money through me.""
"That's what the evidence suggests.""
I looked at the photographs on the wall.
"Then why was I raised by Daniel and Denise?""
Michael answered.
"Because you were the other baby. The one whose records could be used to create a convincing alternative identity. If anyone questioned the beneficiary's history, they could point to you and claim the hospital had simply made an administrative error.""
I stared at him.
"Was I ever in danger?""
"Yes," he said.
"But not for the reason you think.""
He took another document from the notebook.
It was a copy of a medical report dated October 2009. The patient's name had been blacked out, but a handwritten note remained visible.
*Genetic match inconsistent with designated paternal line. Further testing required.*
A second note had been added in red ink.
*Do not disclose. Child's identity has already been registered.*
Thomas read it twice.
"This suggests that the original test did not support the identity entered into the legal record.""
"Meaning someone knew the beneficiary wasn't Robert's biological daughter," I said.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Thomas looked at the bottom of the page.
The signature was faint but legible.
*Dr. Samuel Whitmore.*
Michael shook his head.
"Whitmore didn't create this scheme. He discovered it.""
"Then who changed the results?""
Nobody answered.
My sister walked toward the window.
"I don't care about the inheritance," she said.
"I want the truth about the woman who raised me. I want to know why I was taken away from her. I want to know whether anyone ever loved me without seeing a dollar sign attached to my name.""
Denise crossed the room.
She stopped a few feet away, uncertain whether she had the right to approach.
My sister looked at her.
"Did you love me?""
Denise's face crumpled.
"Before I knew your name, before I knew which baby was which, before I understood what they had done, I loved you. I loved both of you.""
My sister began to cry.
Denise held out her arms.
For a long moment, my sister didn't move.
Then she stepped into them.
I watched them embrace, feeling both relieved and devastated. I had spent seventeen years believing I knew who my family was. Now every answer seemed to uncover another lie.
Thomas's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
"It's the police.""
He answered, listened, and slowly turned toward us.
"Ethan has requested a meeting.""
"With whom?"" I asked.
"With both girls.""
My sister pulled away from Denise.
"Absolutely not.""
Thomas listened again.
Then his face went white.
"The police say Ethan has offered to confess everything.""
Michael frowned.
"What's the condition?""
Thomas lowered the phone.
"He wants to speak to the biological daughter of Robert Hale.""
My sister stared at him.
"That's me.""
"According to the current evidence, yes.""
Thomas looked at me.
"But Ethan says the records we found are incomplete. He claims the girl designated as Robert's heir was never either of you.""
I felt the room close around me.
"What does that mean?""
Thomas ended the call.
Before he could answer, a message appeared on his phone from the police investigator.
It contained a photograph of a document recovered from Ethan's belongings.
At the top was a hospital identification number.
At the bottom was a name.
*MOTHER: VICTORIA HALE.*
*CHILD: FEMALE, BORN OCTOBER 14, 2009.*
And beside the child's name, someone had written:
*THIRD DELIVERY — PRIVATE WARD.*
I looked at my sister.
She looked at me.
Two babies had been placed in the nursery.
May you like
But the record suggested there had been a third.
And somewhere, a girl born on the same day as us had vanished without a trace.
