Chapter 5: My Mother Finally Told the Truth

I found Denise sitting on the back porch when I returned home.

She wore the same gray sweater she'd been wearing that morning. Her hair was pulled into a loose knot, and a mug of untouched tea sat beside her on the wooden railing.

She looked older than she had twelve hours earlier.

When she heard the back door open, she turned toward me.

"Maya.""

I stopped at the threshold.

"You said you needed to tell me something.""

She nodded.

"Please sit down.""

"No.""

Her face crumpled.

I hated seeing her cry. Even now, after the lies, after the hidden documents, after learning that my entire identity might have been built around a secret, some part of me still wanted to comfort her.

But I couldn't.

Not until I knew what I was comforting her for.

"You told me Michael was my father," I said.

"Then you told me Robert Hale might be my father. Now you're saying Robert was alive when I was born. Which parts of your story are true?""

Denise wrapped both hands around the mug.

"Michael was the man I loved.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"I know.""

"Did Michael die before I was born?""

"Yes.""

"Did Robert Hale die before I was born?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Then why does his death certificate say April?""

"Because he disappeared.""

"That's not the same as dying.""

"No," she whispered.

"It isn't.""

I stepped onto the porch but remained standing.

"Start at the beginning.""

Denise stared out at the backyard. The maple tree near the fence had begun shedding its orange leaves, scattering them across the grass. I remembered climbing that tree when I was six while she stood beneath it, warning me not to go too high.

Back then, I believed my mother knew everything.

Now I wondered how much of her life had been invented.

"Michael and I grew up together," she began.

"Our families were close. We were friends long before we became something more.""

"Did you love him?""

"Yes.""

The answer came without hesitation.

"Then why did you marry Daniel?""

She closed her eyes.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

She explained that Michael had been working for Robert Hale, a wealthy businessman who owned several properties and had investments in local companies. Robert had taken an interest in Michael's work and eventually offered him a partnership.

But the relationship between the two men deteriorated.

"Michael believed Robert was hiding money from the people who worked for him," Denise said.

"He found documents that suggested someone had been transferring assets into accounts that didn't belong to the company.""

"What does that have to do with me?""

"Everything, eventually.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Michael planned to report what he'd found. A few days before he died, he told me that Robert had threatened him.""

I sat down.

"Threatened him how?""

"He said Michael would regret interfering in his business.""

"And then Michael died in a car accident.""

Denise nodded.

"His car went off a bridge during a storm.""

"Was Robert involved?""

"I don't know.""

"Did the police investigate?""

"They said the roads were wet, and the car had been traveling too fast. Michael had been drinking earlier that evening. The case was closed.""

I watched her face.

"You never believed it was an accident.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because two days after the funeral, Robert came to see me.""

A cold sensation spread through my chest.

"What did he want?""

"He asked whether Michael had told me anything about his business. When I said no, he asked about the baby.""

I gripped the edge of the chair.

"He knew you were pregnant?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

"He said that if the child was his, he would make sure she was provided for. But if the child belonged to Michael, he wanted nothing to do with it.""

I stared at her.

"Why would he say that?""

"Because he and Michael had been arguing about something much bigger than money.""

She reached into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I kept this for years.""

She handed it to me.

It was a letter from Robert, dated September 2009.

Denise, I need you to understand that the child cannot be connected to me. There are people watching my movements, and any public acknowledgment would put all of us at risk. If the child is mine, I will provide for her through a trust. If the child is Michael's, you must let the past remain buried.

I read the letter twice.

"He knew there was a chance I was his daughter.""

"Yes.""

"And you still married Daniel.""

"Daniel offered to help me. He loved me, and he believed he could protect us.""

"From Robert?""

"From everything.""

I looked down at the letter.

"Why would Robert think I was his daughter? Were you involved with him?""

Denise recoiled as if I'd struck her.

"No.""

"Then how could I be his?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Because Michael told me something shortly before he died. He said Robert had asked him to help with a private medical arrangement. He never explained exactly what it was. I thought it was some kind of business matter.""

"What kind of medical arrangement?""

"I don't know.""

I stared at her.

"You don't know anything, do you?""

"I know what happened the night you were born.""

The words stopped me.

I leaned forward.

"Then tell me.""

Denise put the letter on the railing.

"When you were delivered, Dr. Whitmore told me that your blood type didn't match what he expected based on the information I'd given him about Michael.""

I frowned.

"That doesn't prove anything.""

"No. But he was concerned because the hospital records contained conflicting information about your biological father.""

"Why?""

"Because a second set of documents had already been submitted before you were born.""

My skin prickled.

"Submitted by whom?""

She hesitated.

"Robert.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

"He had arranged for a private medical examination earlier that year. He believed there was a possibility he was your biological father, and he wanted the question settled before the baby was born.""

"Then why did he wait until I was born?""

"Because he was trying to protect himself. He didn't want his name connected to you unless the results were certain.""

I stood and paced across the porch.

"So he ordered a DNA test before I was born?""

"Yes.""

"And the result?""

Denise shook her head.

"I never saw it.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not!""

"You signed the second birth certificate!""

"I signed the paperwork the doctor gave me. He said it was necessary to protect your identity until the court could resolve the dispute.""

"Protect me from what?""

Denise looked toward the house.

"From Robert's family.""

I stopped pacing.

"His family?""

"He was married, Maya. He had a wife and a son. They knew about Michael's investigation, and they believed he was going to leave everything to someone outside the family.""

I remembered Thomas's words about an estate.

"Did Robert have other children?""

"One son. His name was Ethan.""

The name meant nothing to me, but the way Denise said it made my stomach tighten.

"What happened to him?""

"He was at the hospital the night you were born.""

I stared at her.

"Why would Robert's son be at the hospital?""

"Because he was there when Robert arrived.""

"Arrived from where?""

Denise's eyes darted toward the back door.

Before she could answer, a car door slammed in the driveway.

Daniel had returned.

He stepped onto the porch holding a thick envelope.

His gaze moved from Denise to me, then to the letter on the railing.

"You told her," he said.

Denise rose.

"She deserved to know.""

Daniel placed the envelope on the table.

"You've told her enough.""

I grabbed it before he could pull it away.

Inside were several legal documents and a photograph of a young man standing beside a hospital bed.

The man was Daniel.

He looked younger, his hair darker, his face drawn with exhaustion.

Beside him lay a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Me.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

October 14, 2009. Baby transferred to Daniel Carter's custody.

I turned the photograph over again.

"Transferred?""

Daniel reached for it.

I pulled it away.

"What does that mean?""

He stared at me.

Then he looked at Denise.

She whispered, "Tell her.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I was told your mother had given birth to a healthy baby girl. I signed the paperwork because I was your legal father.""

"But this says transferred to your custody.""

"Because the hospital had concerns about the original records.""

"What concerns?""

He didn't answer.

I pulled out the final document.

It was a legal guardianship order dated the day after my birth.

At the bottom was a judge's signature.

Above it, a single sentence had been underlined in red.

*THE CHILD'S BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY SHALL REMAIN SEALED UNTIL HER SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY OR UNTIL THE DEATH OF ROBERT HALE, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Why was my paternity sealed until today?""

He opened his mouth.

Before he could speak, Denise answered.

"Because Robert was supposed to tell you himself.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at me through her tears.

"Robert promised that on your seventeenth birthday, he would come forward and tell you the truth.""

"But you said he died.""

Daniel slowly lowered himself into a chair.

"He never made it to your first birthday," he said.

"Then how could he promise to come forward seventeen years later?""

Neither of them answered.

I looked down at the documents.

The date on the guardianship order was October 15, 2009.

The day after I was born.

The day Robert Hale disappeared.

And beneath the judge's signature, in handwriting that matched the red note on my birth certificate, were four words.

*THE CHILD MUST REMAIN SAFE.*

My phone vibrated.

Thomas Bennett had sent another message.

*The court has granted access to the sealed certificate. I have the father's name.*

A second message followed.

*Maya, whatever your parents tell you, do not assume the man named on that certificate is the man who raised you.*

Then the phone rang.

Thomas's voice was urgent.

"There's been a development," he said.

"Someone just accessed the original hospital archive.""

"Who?""

He paused.

"The same person who signed the order sealing your identity.""

I looked at the judge's signature.

"What does that mean?""

May you like

Thomas's answer made the room spin.

"That judge died eleven years ago, Maya. Whoever accessed the archive used credentials that should no longer exist.""
