Chapter 12: The Sister Who Knew My Name

Vanessa was waiting outside my apartment when I returned that afternoon.

She sat on the steps with her arms wrapped around her knees. Her hair was tangled, and her eyes were swollen from crying. Beside her lay a small suitcase.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Can we talk?””

I stopped several feet away.

“About what?””

“Everything.””

I looked at the suitcase.

“Are you leaving?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you here?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I heard you went to Margaret Ellis. I know she showed you the will.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“How do you know that?””

“Because Benjamin called me from the detention center.””

I stared at her.

“He's in custody. How did he call you?””

“He used his lawyer's phone. He said if I didn't stop you from claiming the trust, he'd tell the police everything about the night my mother died.””

I shook my head.

“He's already been charged.””

“He has people who can make things disappear, Nia. You know that.””

I wanted to dismiss her fear as another manipulation.

But I remembered the way Benjamin had controlled Arthur for decades. I remembered the threats, the missing records, and the evidence that had vanished whenever someone tried to expose him.

“What do you want from me?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“I want to tell you what happened before you were born.””

I unlocked the door.

“Then come inside.””

She followed me into the living room and sat on the edge of the sofa. For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

I placed the first paternity test on the coffee table.

Vanessa stared at it.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“Mom told you about the second envelope, didn't she?””

“She left instructions for me to ask you about it.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Then I suppose it's time.””

She took a small velvet pouch from her suitcase.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

The edges were worn, and the ink had faded, but the laboratory stamp remained visible.

It was another paternity test.

This one had been conducted before I was born.

The result confirmed Daniel Whitmore as my biological father.

But the name beneath his was not Eleanor Carter.

It was Vanessa's mother, Rebecca Hale.

I stared at the page.

“What does Rebecca have to do with my paternity test?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Everything.””

I looked at her.

“Explain.””

She pressed her hands together.

“My mother discovered Benjamin's financial crimes in 2001. She was going to tell Eleanor, but before she could, Benjamin found out. He threatened to expose an affair that would destroy both families.””

“What affair?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel and my mother had been involved years before he met Eleanor.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I shook my head.

“No. Daniel and Mom were together first.””

“They were. But after they separated, Daniel met Rebecca. They had a relationship that lasted several months. When it ended, Rebecca returned to my father.””

I stared at the test.

“Then why is Daniel listed here?””

“Because Benjamin believed you might be his child.””

I felt sick.

“But I was born after Mom and Daniel got back together.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's what everyone assumed. But when Mom discovered she was pregnant, she wasn't certain of the exact dates. She had been with Daniel shortly before she married Arthur, and she was afraid Benjamin would use the uncertainty to destroy her.””

I shook my head.

“Are you saying my mother didn't know who my father was?””

“She suspected Daniel. That's why she arranged the first test.””

I stared at the document.

“And the second test?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Benjamin ordered it. He wanted to prove you belonged to Daniel so he could use your existence to challenge Eleanor's inheritance and control Whitmore Holdings.””

I felt cold.

“Then why did Mom hide the result?””

“Because she discovered something else.””

Vanessa reached into the pouch and pulled out a letter.

My mother's handwriting covered the page.

Rebecca, I know what Benjamin has threatened you with. I know you were afraid to speak. But Nia is innocent, and she deserves a life that isn't shaped by our fathers' mistakes.

I looked up.

“Rebecca was helping Mom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“My mother found evidence that Benjamin had forged documents to take control of Whitmore Holdings. She was going to give them to Eleanor. That's why Benjamin was so desperate to stop her.””

“Then why was Rebecca in the other car?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“She wasn't supposed to be.””

The room went silent.

I waited.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“On September 17, 2001, my mother followed Daniel and me because she thought I was running away. She didn't know Eleanor was meeting him. She didn't know Benjamin had sent Richard to intercept her.””

“You said the accident happened because your mother was driving too fast.””

“That was what Benjamin told the police. But it wasn't the whole truth.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Richard deliberately rammed her car. When she lost control, she struck the tree. Daniel's car was forced off the road when Richard hit him, too.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“And Mom?””

“She arrived after the first crash. She was trying to help Rebecca when Benjamin came back. He'd been following Richard in another car.””

My heart hammered.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

“He told Richard to leave. He told Arthur to take Daniel away. Then he went to your mother.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Was she alive?””

Vanessa nodded.

“For a little while.””

“Did Benjamin hurt her?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I don't know exactly what happened. I was in the car with Daniel. I heard them arguing.

I heard Mom scream. Then Benjamin came back and told us she was dead.””

I stood abruptly.

“Why didn't you tell anyone?””

“Because Benjamin said he'd blame Daniel for Rebecca's death and Eleanor's. He said he'd make sure Arthur lost everything and that I'd be charged as an accomplice.””

I paced toward the window.

“And you believed him.””

“I was sixteen!””

“You were old enough to sign a statement for Mom's lawyer.””

Vanessa flinched.

I turned toward her.

“You signed a statement saying Benjamin gave Richard the keys. Then you withdrew it.””

She began to cry.

“Arthur begged me to.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought Benjamin would destroy you if the statement became public. He said the only way to protect you was to let Daniel take the blame and keep the family together.””

I stared at her.

“So you chose silence.””

“Yes.””

“And then you spent years blaming me for the life you helped destroy.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know.””

I felt anger rise through me, hot and immediate.

“You ripped Mom's dress. You called her love a competition. You watched me grow up believing I was the reason our family was broken.””

“I was jealous.””

The admission was so quiet that I almost missed it.

Vanessa looked up.

“Mom loved you without fear. She could hold you, protect you, and tell you that you were safe. With me, everything was complicated. My mother died, and I was left with a father who was never home and a grandfather who treated me like a possession.””

She wiped her face.

“When Eleanor married Arthur, she tried to love me. She paid for my school, came to my performances, and helped me when I was struggling. But every time she held you, I remembered that she was the mother I wanted and you were the child she had chosen.””

I stared at her.

“She didn't choose me instead of you.””

“I know that now.””

“No, Vanessa. You knew it then. You just couldn't accept it.””

She looked away.

For several seconds, I could hear nothing but the ticking of the wall clock.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“There's something else about the will.””

I stiffened.

“What?””

“Mom didn't just leave you the trust. She left me a separate letter.””

“Where is it?””

“Benjamin took it.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because it contained a confession. Mom wrote that she knew I had withdrawn my statement, and she believed Arthur had pressured me. She wanted to protect me from prosecution, but she also wanted me to testify when the time came.””

I sat down slowly.

“So Benjamin has a letter proving you knew the truth.””

“Yes.””

“And he's using it to keep you quiet.””

Vanessa nodded.

I looked at the paternity test again.

For years, I'd believed the secret was simple: Daniel was my biological father, Arthur had raised me, and Benjamin had tried to keep the truth hidden.

But the truth was a web of fear, jealousy, money, and choices.

Everyone had played a part.

Some had lied to protect themselves. Some had lied to protect others. And some had allowed fear to become an excuse for cruelty.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why did you destroy Mom's dress?””

She began to cry again.

“Because I found the envelope hidden in the seam before the memorial. I saw the words on the front. I knew what it contained, and I panicked. I thought if I destroyed the dress, the envelope would be ruined, too.””

I stared at her.

“You knew the envelope was there?””

“Yes.””

“Then you knew Mom had hidden it for me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And you tried to take it away.””

“I was afraid you'd discover everything.””

I stood.

“You don't get to decide what I can handle.””

“I know.””

I walked to the front door and opened it.

Vanessa looked at me, startled.

“Are you throwing me out?””

“No. I'm giving you a choice.””

She stood slowly.

“What choice?””

“You can keep protecting Benjamin, or you can tell the police everything you know. You can tell them about Richard, about the accident, about the statement you withdrew, and about the letter he stole.””

Her eyes filled.

“If I testify, I'll have to admit I helped him.””

“Yes.””

“I could go to prison.””

“Maybe.””

She stared at me.

I held her gaze.

“I'm not going to lie for you, Vanessa. I'm not going to destroy evidence to save you. But if you tell the truth, I'll make sure you have a lawyer who understands what happened to you when you were sixteen.””

She looked at the floor.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then she reached into her suitcase and removed a small flash drive.

“I made a copy of the statement before I withdrew it.””

I stared at her.

“You still have it?””

She nodded.

“There's something else on it. A recording Mom made the night before she died. She gave it to me because she wanted me to understand why she had chosen Arthur to raise you.””

My breath caught.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't understand it myself.””

She placed the flash drive on the table.

Then she looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

“Nia, your mother didn't choose Arthur because she wanted to hide Daniel from you.””

She swallowed.

“She chose Arthur because she believed Daniel would come back for you one day, and she was afraid Benjamin would use you to destroy him.””

I stared at the flash drive.

Vanessa's voice broke.

“But that's not the only reason.””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Mom knew Arthur had made the call that sent Richard after her. She also knew that, before the accident, Arthur had secretly contacted a lawyer to arrange a way for you to inherit Whitmore Holdings without Benjamin ever finding out.””

I felt the room spin.

“Why would she trust him after that?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Because she believed he was the only person who could protect you from what was coming.””

I picked up the flash drive.

For the first time, I began to understand that my mother's choices might have been more complicated than any of us had imagined.

I plugged it into my laptop.

A single audio file appeared on the screen.

The date was September 16, 2001.

One day before the accident.

I pressed PLAY.

My mother's voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, Nia must never believe that her life was an accident.””

A pause followed.

Then she said the words that made Vanessa cover her face.

“Arthur, if you're listening to this, I know what you did. I know about the phone call. And I know why you made it.””

The recording crackled.

My mother's final words were barely audible.

“But if you truly love my daughter, you must tell her what you promised Benjamin in exchange for keeping her alive.””

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa whispered, “There's more.””

May you like

The recording continued.

And then my mother's voice revealed the secret that would change everything I thought I knew about the man who had raised me.
