Chapter 8: The Voice on the Cassette
Daniel took me to a small apartment above a closed bookstore, three blocks from the river.
He claimed it was a temporary place he'd rented while searching for me. The rooms were clean but almost empty. A suitcase stood beside the sofa, and a single framed photograph rested on the windowsill.
My mother.
She was laughing in the photograph, her head tilted back, her eyes squeezed shut.
I had never seen that picture before.
“Where was this taken?”” I asked.
“London. In 2000.””
I looked at him.
“You were together then?””
Daniel nodded.
“We were trying to decide whether to get married. Your mother wanted children. I wanted to build a company first. We thought we had time.””
He gave a sad smile.
“We were wrong about a lot of things.””
I set the folder on the table.
“Let's listen to the tape.””
Daniel looked at the small cassette recorder beside the television.
“I don't have a player.””
I pulled out my phone.
“We can find one.””
After a few minutes, Daniel returned from a nearby convenience store carrying an old portable cassette player he'd bought from a secondhand electronics shop.
We sat at the kitchen table.
The tape clicked into place.
I pressed PLAY.
Static hissed through the speaker.
Then my mother's voice filled the room.
“September seventeenth. Nine forty-five p.m. I'm recording this because I no longer trust the people around me.””
I closed my eyes.
She sounded tired, but determined.
“Benjamin has threatened me again. He says if I take the financial records to the authorities, he'll destroy Daniel. He says Arthur will lose his company, and Vanessa will lose her inheritance.””
A pause.
“I told him that none of those things would stop me.””
The recording crackled.
Then another voice spoke.
A woman's voice.
“I think you're making a terrible mistake, Eleanor.””
My eyes flew open.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
“Who is that?””
I shook my head.
I knew the voice.
I had heard it at family dinners, Christmas celebrations, and every birthday since childhood.
It was Diane.
My aunt.
The recording continued.
“You don't understand how far Benjamin is willing to go,” Diane said.
My mother's voice sharpened.
“I understand perfectly. That's why I'm going to the police.””
“You can't.””
“Watch me.””
A chair scraped across the floor.
Diane's voice became quieter.
“Eleanor, please. Think about Nia.””
“Don't use my daughter to frighten me.””
“I'm trying to protect her.””
“Then help me expose him.””
Silence followed.
When Diane spoke again, she was crying.
“I can't.””
My mother's voice softened.
“Why?””
“Because I was there.””
I gripped the table.
“Diane,” I whispered.
The recording continued.
“I saw Benjamin give Richard the keys,” Diane said.
“I saw the money transfer. I know he arranged everything.””
“Then testify.””
“I can't. He has evidence that could put me in prison.””
“For what?””
A long pause.
Then Diane whispered, “For helping him.””
Daniel's face went rigid.
The recording crackled.
My mother spoke slowly.
“What did you do, Diane?””
“I gave him the information about your route. I told him where you planned to meet Daniel. I thought he only wanted to scare you into handing over the documents.””
I stopped breathing.
My aunt had helped Benjamin locate my mother.
She had known where Eleanor would be that night.
But had she known what would happen?
Diane's voice broke.
“When I heard about the crash, I went to the estate. I saw Richard's car. I saw Benjamin. I saw Arthur standing beside the road.””
My mother's voice rose.
“Arthur was there?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
“He told Benjamin to stop. He said the police were coming. Then Benjamin made a phone call, and everything changed.””
“What phone call?””
“I don't know. But after that, Arthur told Daniel to run.””
Daniel pressed both hands against his face.
The recording continued.
My mother's voice was shaking now.
“Diane, did you know Benjamin planned to kill me?””
“No.””
“Did you know Richard would hit my car?””
“No! Eleanor, I swear I didn't know!””
“Then why did you help him?””
“Because I was scared. Because Benjamin threatened Vanessa. Because he said he'd take everything from us.””
My mother was silent for a long time.
Then she spoke softly.
“You have to tell the truth.””
“I can't.””
“You have to.””
“He'll destroy us.””
“Then let him try.””
A loud crash sounded through the tape.
Diane screamed.
Then came Benjamin's voice.
“You stupid woman.””
My blood turned cold.
The recording continued, but the sound was muffled, as though the recorder had been placed inside a bag.
Benjamin spoke again.
“Did you give her the documents?””
“No,” Diane whispered.
“Did you tell her about the transfer?””
“No.””
“Then why is she still asking questions?””
“Because she won't stop!””
A sharp slap followed.
Then my mother's voice.
“Don't touch her.””
Benjamin laughed.
“Still trying to save everyone, Eleanor? You couldn't even save yourself.””
The tape ended.
I sat frozen.
Daniel reached across the table.
“Nia.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
He withdrew his hand.
For a moment, the only sound in the room was rain against the window.
Then I stood.
“I need to call Diane.””
Daniel rose too.
“Wait.””
“Why?””
“Because if Benjamin knows you have that tape, Diane may be in danger.””
I stared at him.
“She helped him.””
“She was frightened. That doesn't excuse what she did, but it doesn't mean she deserves to be hurt.””
I hated that he was right.
I called Diane.
She answered almost immediately.
“Nia?””
“I'm listening to Mom's recording.””
A long silence.
Then Diane whispered, “I'm sorry.””
“You gave Benjamin her route.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was going to meet Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Did you know he planned to hurt her?””
“No. I swear to you, Nia. I thought he wanted the documents.””
“Then why didn't you tell the police afterward?””
Diane began to cry.
“Because when I arrived at the estate, your mother was already dead. Benjamin told me he had enough evidence to make it look like I helped plan the accident. He said he'd tell the police I'd arranged everything.””
“Did you?””
“No!””
Her answer came with such desperation that I believed she was telling the truth.
But believing her didn't erase what she'd done.
“What happened after the crash?”” I asked.
Diane took a shaky breath.
“Arthur and Benjamin argued. Benjamin wanted Daniel blamed for everything. Arthur said he wouldn't allow it. Then Benjamin threatened to expose Arthur's financial dealings.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Arthur helped cover it up.””
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Did Mom know Arthur was there?””
“She knew he'd gone to the estate to look for her. She didn't know Benjamin had summoned him.””
I thought about the recording.
The phone call.
Arthur standing beside the road.
“Diane, what did Benjamin say after the accident?””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“He told Arthur that if he ever revealed what had happened, Vanessa would be charged with causing the crash.””
I stared at the wall.
Vanessa.
Sixteen years old, frightened, grieving her mother, and trapped in a family that had been built on blackmail.
“Was Vanessa involved?””
“No. She didn't know anything about Benjamin's plan. She only knew Daniel had been driving her when the crash happened.””
I swallowed.
“Then why did Mom tell me Vanessa knew why Daniel left?””
“Because Vanessa saw Benjamin leave the estate after the accident. She knew he had been there, but she was too young to understand what it meant.””
I ended the call.
Daniel stood near the window.
“Now you understand why I disappeared.””
I looked at him.
“You disappeared because Arthur told you to run.””
“Yes.””
“But you stayed away for twenty-three years.””
He looked down.
“I thought I was protecting you. Benjamin had threatened to frame me for murder. If I stayed, he would have destroyed me, and you would have grown up in the middle of it.””
“You could have found another way.””
“I should have.””
His voice cracked.
“I should have fought harder. I should have come back. I should have found you when you were a child, even if all I could do was watch from a distance.””
I wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
But the pain in his eyes was real, and so was the grief he had carried.
“Did you love my mother?”” I asked.
Daniel nodded.
“More than anything.””
“Then why didn't you marry her?””
“Because I thought I had to become successful before I could give her the life she deserved. Benjamin used that weakness against me. He offered me a business partnership, then manipulated the company accounts until it looked as though I'd stolen money.””
He sat down.
“By the time I realized what he'd done, Eleanor was married to Arthur. I thought I'd lost her. Then she told me she was pregnant, and I wanted to be part of your life. But Benjamin threatened to expose me as a criminal if I came near you.””
“So you left.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“And I've regretted it every day since.””
I sat opposite him.
“I don't know how to forgive you.””
“You don't have to do it tonight.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
Where are you? Dad says you're missing.
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
Please answer me. Benjamin knows about the tape.
I typed a reply.
How?
The answer came immediately.
Because I told him where the recorder was.
I felt my blood turn cold.
Before I could respond, Vanessa called.
I answered.
“Why would you tell him?””
Her voice shook.
“Because he said he'd show me the evidence against Dad. He promised he'd explain what happened to my mother.””
“You gave him the location of the recorder?””
“I didn't know you'd taken it. I swear.””
I closed my eyes.
“Vanessa, he knows everything now.””
“I know.””
There was a long pause.
Then she whispered, “Nia, there's something else. Benjamin wasn't the only person who ordered Richard to follow Mom that night.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“Before Mom died, I heard her arguing with Arthur. She said he had made a deal with Benjamin. She said if he didn't tell you the truth, she'd expose him, too.””
I stared at Daniel.
He had gone completely still.
“Vanessa,” I whispered, “what did Dad do?””
She took a trembling breath.
“He didn't just help cover up the accident.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was the one who called Richard.””
