Chapter 7: The Truth About Marcus
The sentence on the paper blurred.
Not because I couldn’t read it.
Because my mind refused to understand it.
Daniel, I need you to know the truth about Marcus’s birth.
I stared at those words until the ink felt like it was moving.
Behind me, I heard the door open.
Marcus stepped outside.
“Dad?””
I folded the paper slightly.
Too quickly.
Too obviously.
He noticed.
Of course he noticed.
My son had spent two years searching for hidden truths.
He had learned to recognize when someone was hiding something.
“What does it say?””
I looked at James.
My brother looked away.
Vanessa stood behind the glass door, watching us.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
I hated that feeling.
Like I was the last person invited to my own life.
“Dad.””
Marcus’s voice was quieter.
“What is it?””
I looked at him.
The same eyes as Elena.
The same stubbornness.
The same way of standing when he was scared but refusing to show it.
I wanted to tell him everything was fine.
That I would handle it.
That he didn’t need another painful truth tonight.
But I had already seen what lies did to him.
I wasn’t going to give him another one.
“I don’t know yet.””
His face fell.
Not because he was disappointed.
Because he heard what I didn’t say.
There was something.
Something big.
James stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
My son looked at him.
“You knew?””
James hesitated.
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“Of course you did.””
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Everyone knew something.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Everyone knew something about my mom.””
Then at James.
“Everyone knew something about me.””
He pointed at the letter in my hand.
“And now you found another thing.””
The guilt on everyone’s faces confirmed it.
Marcus looked at me.
“Just tell me.””
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because I didn’t know how to say it.
How do you tell your child that the foundation of his identity might not be what he believed?
How do you look into his eyes and say:
The story you were given may have been incomplete.
James answered for me.
“Your mother was trying to protect you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“From what?””
James glanced at me.
Then at the house.
Then back at Marcus.
“From Adrian.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
Marcus’s voice sharpened.
“But nobody tells me why.””
James took a breath.
“Because Adrian discovered something about your family.””
“What?””
James looked at me.
And I knew.
Whatever he said next would change everything.
“Your father isn’t your biological father.””
The world went silent.
No sound.
No movement.
Nothing.
Marcus stared at James.
Then slowly looked at me.
I felt something break inside my chest.
Not because the words were true.
Because I had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
And none of them prepared me for seeing my son’s face when he heard them.
“Dad?””
His voice was small.
Like he was suddenly a little boy again.
I stepped toward him.
“Marcus.””
“Is that true?””
I wanted to answer immediately.
I wanted to say something that would make the pain disappear.
But I couldn’t lie.
Not anymore.
“I don’t know.””
That was the worst answer I could give.
His eyes filled.
“You don’t know?””
I looked at the letter.
“Elena wrote this.””
He stared.
“Mom knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she didn’t tell me?””
The pain in his voice was unbearable.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“I need to understand.””
James moved closer.
“Your mother loved you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
“No,” James said softly.
“It doesn’t.””
For the first time that night, nobody tried to protect Marcus with a lie.
And somehow, that hurt more.
I opened the letter.
My hands shook.
The paper was old.
But Elena’s words were clear.
Daniel,
If Marcus finds this, it means I failed to protect him the way I promised.
I stopped reading.
Marcus looked at me.
“Keep going.””
I swallowed.
You deserve to know the truth, but Marcus deserves to know it without believing he was ever unwanted.
My eyes closed.
Because that sounded exactly like Elena.
Always thinking about everyone else first.
Daniel, when Marcus was born, I made a decision that changed all our lives.
I continued.
I chose you.
Marcus looked confused.
I looked at him.
Not because you shared blood.
The sentence hit like a punch.
Because you were the only man who ever loved him without asking for anything in return.
Marcus’s breathing changed.
James looked down.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
The night Marcus was born, I found out the truth about Adrian.
My eyes moved faster.
He was never just a businessman. He was connected to my past.
A cold feeling entered my body.
Before I met Daniel, I was involved in an investigation into Adrian Wells and the people around him.
I looked at James.
He nodded slightly.
When I discovered I was pregnant, I learned Adrian had been searching for something.
The paper shook in my hand.
Not money.
Not power.
Information.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked terrified.
Marcus was the only thing I had that Adrian could use against me.
My heart tightened.
But Daniel gave Marcus something Adrian never could.
Safety.
A tear moved down Marcus’s face.
I continued.
Daniel, you need to know something.
The next line made me stop.
Because Elena had written it differently.
Harder.
As if she wanted to make sure I never misunderstood.
You are Marcus’s father.
I looked up.
Marcus was watching me.
Blood creates a child.
Love creates a father.
The words destroyed me.
I had spent fifteen years waking up for him.
Making breakfast.
Taking him to school.
Sitting beside hospital beds.
Teaching him how to ride a bike.
Being there.
Every day.
And somehow, I had allowed someone else’s definition of family to make me question it.
But the letter wasn’t finished.
There is one more truth.
My stomach tightened.
The reason Adrian wants Marcus is because Marcus has something that belongs to him.
I frowned.
Something?
What could a child have?
When Marcus was born, I discovered Adrian had hidden evidence inside the Haven Project archives.
I looked at James.
“Evidence?””
He nodded.
I copied the files.
My heart started pounding.
And I hid them where Adrian would never think to look.
I looked around.
The house.
The yard.
The tree.
The envelope.
Inside Marcus’s first memory.
I stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“My first memory?””
He looked confused.
“I don’t understand.””
James stepped closer.
“Your mother knew Adrian would search everywhere.””
“Where did she hide it?””
James looked at him.
“In the one place nobody would ever suspect.””
A terrible silence followed.
Marcus’s face changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Mom’s necklace.””
Everyone went still.
“What necklace?””
Marcus looked at me.
“The one she gave me before she disappeared.””
I remembered it.
A small silver necklace.
Elena put it around his neck on his tenth birthday.
She told him it was special.
She told him to never lose it.
My chest tightened.
“Where is it?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“When did you lose it?””
He hesitated.
“I didn’t.””
Nobody spoke.
“What do you mean?””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“I saw it after Mom disappeared.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Marcus whispered:
“You took it.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Vanessa looked shocked.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped back.
“I remember.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“You said it was dangerous.””
Her face went pale.
“You said it wasn’t safe for me to keep.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You had Elena’s necklace?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was trying to protect it.””
“Where is it now?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled.
“I gave it to someone.””
The air changed.
“Who?””
She looked at James.
Then Raymond.
Then me.
“I gave it back to Elena.””
My heart stopped.
“Back?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Because she came for it.””
“When?””
Vanessa’s voice became a whisper.
“The night she disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked at her.
“My mom was here?””
“Yes.””
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell me she left?””
Vanessa broke.
“Because she made me promise.””
Marcus stared.
“What did she say?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“She said if anything happened to her…”
A pause.
“She said the necklace would lead you to the truth.””
The room went silent.
Then Raymond’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed instantly.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then his expression hardened.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m coming.””
He hung up.
“What happened?””
Raymond looked at Marcus.
“The necklace was found.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Raymond looked at me.
“At Room 317.””
The impossible room.
The room that didn’t exist anymore.
James went pale.
“That’s not possible.””
Raymond nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
“Then how?””
Raymond looked toward the front door.
“Because someone just sent me a photo.””
He showed us the screen.
The image was dark.
But clear enough.
A silver necklace lying on an old wooden table.
And behind it…
A handwritten note.
My breath caught.
Because the handwriting belonged to Elena.
The message said:
*Bring Marcus alone.*
May you like
And beneath it were four more words.
*I know who his father is.*
