The Envelope in His Hand / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Disappearances

The figure outside the abandoned Haven building didn’t move.

Neither did we.

For a moment, the world became painfully quiet.

The engine was still running.

The rain tapped lightly against the windshield.

The clock on the dashboard changed numbers.

But inside the car, time had stopped.

James stared through the glass like he was looking at a ghost.

“Who is he?”” I asked.

My brother didn’t answer.

His face had lost all color.

“James.””

His eyes stayed fixed on the man outside.

“That’s Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way James said it meant everything.

Marcus looked at him.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

James swallowed.

“The man who made sure I disappeared.””

I looked toward the building.

The man outside stood beneath a broken streetlight.

Older.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Completely calm.

Like he knew we were watching.

“Why would he be here?””

James looked at me.

“Because he knows we’re coming.””

Raymond’s phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone turned.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I reached toward him.

“What is it?””

He handed me the phone.

A message.

One sentence.

*You brought the boy. Good.*

My stomach dropped.

Marcus read it too.

His face changed.

“He knows I’m here.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The entire night had been a path.

The envelope.

The box.

The necklace.

Room 317.

Every clue had brought us exactly where someone wanted us to go.

I turned to Raymond.

“Tell me the truth.””

He looked at me.

“All of it.””

He was quiet.

Then he nodded.

“Victor Hale was Adrian’s partner.””

James looked at him.

“No.””

Raymond glanced at him.

“Yes.””

James shook his head.

“Adrian worked alone.””

“That’s what Adrian wanted people to believe.””

The rain grew heavier.

I looked back at the building.

“How many people are involved?””

Raymond’s expression was serious.

“More than you think.””

I hated that answer.

Everyone had one.

More than you think.

You don’t understand.

It’s complicated.

I was done with complicated.

I opened the car door.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“We’re not hiding anymore.””

His eyes widened.

“You’re going in there?””

“Yes.””

“With him outside?””

“Yes.””

James opened his door.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“This is my family.””

He nodded.

“And mine.””

That was the first time all night James sounded like my brother again.

Not a stranger.

Not a ghost.

My brother.

We stepped out of the car.

Victor watched us approach.

He didn’t run.

Didn’t threaten us.

He simply smiled.

“Daniel Carter.””

His voice was calm.

“You look exactly like your father.””

I stopped.

“How do you know my father?””

Victor smiled slightly.

“I know many things.””

My hands tightened.

“You know about Elena.””

“Yes.””

“You know about Marcus.””

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped closer.

Victor looked at him.

Not with anger.

With curiosity.

“That’s him.””

I moved in front of my son.

“Don’t look at him.””

Victor raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt him.””

James laughed bitterly.

“That’s what you said before.””

Victor looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

“James.””

The way he said the name made my skin crawl.

“You survived.””

James stared.

“Because you failed.””

Victor tilted his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“Because someone wanted you to.””

James froze.

“What?””

Victor looked at me.

“You’ve been lied to by everyone.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s becoming a common theme.””

Victor ignored me.

“Your brother was never my enemy.””

James stepped forward.

“You tried to kill me.””

“No.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“I tried to stop you from making a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“Trusting Elena.””

The name changed the atmosphere.

I stepped closer.

“Don’t talk about my wife.””

Victor looked at me.

“Your wife was brilliant.””

The compliment sounded insulting.

“She discovered something she should not have.””

“What?””

He looked at Marcus.

“The truth about his existence.””

Marcus went still.

I felt him tense beside me.

“You don’t get to talk about my son.””

Victor looked at me.

“Your son is the reason Elena disappeared.””

My anger exploded.

“You better explain that carefully.””

Victor didn’t react.

“Adrian discovered Elena was pregnant.””

James looked confused.

“But Marcus was born after Daniel married her.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why would Adrian care?””

Victor looked at Marcus.

“Because Marcus was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Victor walked closer.

“Proof that Adrian’s entire operation was built on a lie.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Raymond.

He looked away.

That scared me.

“What does that mean?””

Victor reached into his coat.

I immediately moved Marcus behind me.

But Victor only pulled out an old photograph.

He held it toward me.

I didn’t take it.

“What is that?””

“A picture of Elena before she met you.””

I stared.

“I don’t care.””

“You should.””

His voice became quieter.

“Because she wasn’t running from Adrian.””

A pause.

“She was running from herself.””

I took the photo.

My hands went cold.

It showed Elena.

Younger.

Standing beside a man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Because I had seen him before.

In the hospital.

On the night Marcus was born.

My breath stopped.

The man beside Elena was Adrian Wells.

Marcus looked at the picture.

“Mom knew him?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at James.

He looked shocked.

“No.””

Victor turned toward him.

“You never knew everything either.””

James stared.

“What are you saying?””

Victor answered:

“Marcus was born from a relationship Elena had before Daniel.””

The words landed.

I felt Marcus pull away.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he was preparing for another wound.

I turned toward him.

“Marcus.””

But he looked at Victor.

“Is that true?””

Victor didn’t answer.

And that silence was enough.

I grabbed the photo.

“Then why did Elena say I was his father?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because you were.””

The answer confused me.

“What?””

“She chose you.””

I froze.

Victor continued.

“Adrian was Marcus’s biological father.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“But Daniel was the man who raised him.””

I stared.

The same words Elena wrote.

Blood creates a child.

Love creates a father.

Victor nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at him.

“Then why does Adrian want him?””

Victor’s face became serious.

“Because Adrian discovered something about Marcus.””

“What?””

“That Marcus inherited something from him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Victor looked toward the building.

“Something hidden in his DNA.””

James shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Victor looked at him.

“Is it?””

The question bothered me.

Because it sounded like James knew more than he admitted.

I turned.

“James.””

He looked away.

“What?””

“You know something.””

“No.””

“James.””

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Elena suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

“That Adrian wasn’t trying to erase Marcus.””

A pause.

“He was trying to recreate something.””

The building behind Victor suddenly lit up.

One floor.

One room.

A single light in the darkness.

Room 317.

Victor looked toward it.

“It’s time.””

I stepped forward.

“What’s inside?””

He looked at Marcus.

“The truth.””

We entered the building.

The air smelled old.

Dust.

Metal.

Forgotten memories.

The hallway was darker than I expected.

But at the end was a single door.

317.

Exactly as Elena warned.

Victor unlocked it.

The room beyond wasn’t empty.

There were files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Boxes stacked everywhere.

But the thing that made everyone stop…

was the person sitting in the corner.

A woman.

Older.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Mom?””

The woman looked up.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Marcus.””

He moved before anyone could stop him.

He ran to her.

Elena held him like she had been waiting two years for that exact moment.

I stood frozen.

Because after everything…

after every lie…

after every secret…

my wife was alive.

James looked around the room.

Then at Victor.

“This isn’t a prison.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Then what is it?””

Elena held Marcus’s face.

Her eyes moved to me.

And the fear returned.

“Daniel.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“You brought him here.””

I looked at Victor.

“What are you talking about?””

Elena’s expression broke.

“Victor isn’t the person we should have been afraid of.””

The room went silent.

Victor’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Elena whispered:

“Daniel…”

A pause.

“The man who started all of this has been standing beside you the entire time.””

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Toward James.

My brother froze.

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

James stepped back.

“I didn’t.””

But Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“James…”

Her voice broke.

“You were never the one who survived the crash.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The man who came back to you…”

A pause.

“He isn’t your brother.””

The room became silent.

Marcus grabbed my hand.

And the man standing beside us whispered:

“Daniel…”

His face changed.

The voice changed.

“I can explain.””

But I was no longer listening.

Because for ten years…

I had been mourning a dead brother.

May you like

And for the last hour…

I had been trusting a stranger wearing his face.
