Chapter 10: The Truth He Deserved

The door slammed shut behind them.

Marcus didn't move.

Neither did anyone else.

For a moment, the only sound in the storage room was the fluorescent light buzzing overhead.

Then Marcus laughed.

It was quiet.

Almost empty.

“My grandfather?””

Arthur nodded.

Marcus stared at the DNA report.

“You're telling me Calvin Brooks was my biological father?””

Evelyn began to cry.

“I didn't know.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Mom, please. I need the truth now.””

“I swear to you, I didn't know.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“She didn't.””

Marcus turned.

“You knew?””

Arthur's face tightened.

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“I found out six months ago.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the moment I learned Calvin was your biological father, I understood why he had hidden you.””

Marcus looked down at the report.

“Why?””

Arthur picked up the old newspaper clipping.

“Because Calvin had built his entire life on control. Money. Reputation. Power.””

He pointed to the article.

“And I was the person who could destroy it.””

Marcus read the headline again.

“Financial fraud.””

Arthur nodded.

“I discovered he was stealing from workers' pension funds. I copied the records and gave them to investigators.””

“So he threatened you.””

“He threatened everyone.””

Evelyn wiped her tears.

“And me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What did he threaten you with?””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“He told me if I went to the police, he'd make sure Arthur went to prison.””

Arthur shook his head.

“That wasn't the worst of it.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What was?””

Arthur's voice dropped.

“He told me he'd take all three children.””

Marcus stared.

“He could do that?””

“He had lawyers. Money. Connections.””

Arthur looked at the three footprints on the old hospital card.

“I thought if I made you disappear, I could keep you safe.””

Marcus swallowed.

“You lied to Mom.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You let her think I was dead.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“And Daniel?””

“I thought he had been given to another family.””

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“You never stopped looking?””

Arthur shook his head.

“Never.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Then why didn't you find me?””

“Because Calvin erased the records.””

Marcus looked at the DNA report.

“And Elias?””

Arthur stared at the floor.

“I didn't know where he was until years later.””

Elias's voice suddenly came from the doorway.

“I found you.””

Everyone turned.

Elias stood there.

Marcus stared at his brother.

“You came.””

Elias nodded.

“I heard everything.””

He looked at Arthur.

“I always wondered why you never told him.””

Arthur gave a tired smile.

“Because I was ashamed.””

Elias walked into the room.

“You shouldn't have been.””

Arthur looked at him.

“I failed all of you.””

Elias shook his head.

“You saved us.””

Arthur's eyes filled.

“No. I separated you.””

“But you kept us alive.””

Elias pointed at the documents.

“You worked three jobs. You paid for Marcus's school. You found Daniel. You found me.””

Arthur looked down.

“I couldn't undo what I'd done.””

Marcus stared at his father.

For years, he'd imagined his father as a simple man.

A tired man.

A man who worked too much.

Now he understood.

His father had spent twenty-four years carrying a secret heavy enough to break anyone.

Marcus reached for the DNA report.

There was one final line beneath the results.

*Subject C: Calvin Brooks — biological parent confirmed.*

Marcus stared.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“Did Calvin know?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Arthur answered.

“He knew.””

Everyone turned.

Arthur pulled another letter from the box.

“This came from Calvin's lawyer three months before he died.””

Marcus unfolded it.

The handwriting was different.

Typed.

But the message was clear.

*I know which child is mine.*

Marcus's breathing stopped.

He read on.

*If the boy ever learns his biological father, he will also learn what his mother did the night he was born.*

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn covered her face.

“I was scared.””

“What did you do?””

She lowered her hands.

“I gave Calvin the third baby.””

Marcus stared.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You gave him Elias?””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not Elias.””

She looked at Marcus.

“I gave him you.””

The room went silent.

Marcus couldn't breathe.

Arthur's face collapsed.

Evelyn continued through tears.

“When I woke up, Calvin came into my room.””

Arthur whispered, “Evelyn…”

“He told me Arthur had died.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

“He told me your father had been killed in an accident.””

Arthur shook his head.

“I was outside the hospital.””

“I didn't know that.””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Calvin told me he could protect you. He said Arthur wanted you gone.””

Marcus's eyes filled.

“So you gave me to him?””

“I thought I was saving you.””

“What happened?””

“He took you.””

Arthur whispered, “And I found you.””

Marcus turned.

“You found me?””

Arthur nodded.

“I saw Calvin carrying you through the parking garage.””

His voice shook.

“I realized what he'd done.””

“So you took me.””

“Yes.””

“And told everyone I was dead.””

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The entire story rearranged itself in his mind.

His father hadn't stolen him.

His mother hadn't abandoned him.

His grandfather had manipulated all three.

And somewhere between those lies, three children had grown up believing they belonged to different families.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then Elias.

Then Evelyn.

Then Arthur.

For the first time, he saw them not as pieces of a mystery.

But as his family.

Broken.

Late.

Messy.

Still his.

Marcus walked toward Arthur.

Arthur looked frightened.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

Marcus stopped in front of him.

“You should be.””

Arthur nodded.

“I know.””

“You stole my mother from me.””

“Yes.””

“You lied about my brothers.””

“Yes.””

“You made me think I was alone.””

Arthur's eyes filled.

“I know.””

Marcus stood there for several seconds.

Then he hugged him.

Arthur froze.

Marcus felt his father's arms slowly close around him.

Arthur began sobbing.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus whispered against his shoulder.

“I know.””

Across the room, Evelyn cried.

Daniel looked away.

Elias smiled through tears.

The Dean quietly gathered the documents.

Marcus pulled back.

“There’s one thing I still don't understand.””

Arthur wiped his face.

“What?””

Marcus held up the DNA report.

“If Calvin was my biological father, why did he spend twenty-four years trying to erase me?””

Arthur looked at the report.

“Because you weren't the child he wanted.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur reached into the box one last time.

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed Calvin standing beside a woman Marcus had never seen.

The woman held a newborn baby.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

The same date Marcus was born.

Arthur turned it over.

There was a handwritten message.

*My son is not Marcus.*

Marcus stared.

“Then who?””

Arthur's eyes widened.

The Dean suddenly stepped forward.

“Wait.””

He took the photograph.

He examined the woman.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“I know her.””

Marcus's heart jumped.

“Who is she?””

The Dean's voice dropped.

“She was Calvin's wife.””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The woman was smiling.

The baby in her arms had a tiny hospital bracelet.

The name written on it was clearly visible.

*Daniel Brooks.*

Marcus looked at his brother.

Daniel's face went completely pale.

“No.””

Arthur slowly shook his head.

Marcus's voice trembled.

“Then Daniel isn't my biological brother?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“No.””

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His hands began shaking.

“Then who am I?””

The Dean turned the photograph over again.

There was one final sentence.

*If anyone finds this, tell Daniel the truth.*

Marcus looked at Arthur.

Arthur's face had gone completely white.

“What truth?””

Arthur whispered:

“Daniel was the child Calvin thought was his.””

Daniel stared at him.

“And you?””

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“I was never your biological father.””

Marcus felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Arthur reached for him.

But Marcus stepped back.

Not because he hated him.

Because suddenly, after twenty-four years of lies, one question mattered more than anything else.

“Then, Dad…”

Marcus's voice broke.

“If you're not my biological father…”

He looked at Arthur.

“…why did you choose me?””

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

“Because the first time I held you, Marcus…”

He smiled through the tears.

“I didn't care whose blood was in your veins.””

He touched Marcus's shoulder.

May you like

“You were my son.””

And this time, Marcus didn't need another document to believe him.
