Chapter 9: What Arthur Buried

Arthur walked toward the exit.

Marcus followed.

“Where are you going?””

Arthur didn't turn.

“Home.””

“You're not leaving.””

Arthur stopped.

Marcus stood behind him.

“You've spent twenty-four years deciding what I can know.””

Arthur slowly turned.

“I'm trying to fix it.””

“You can't fix twenty-four years.””

“I know.””

“You can't give me my childhood back.””

“I know.””

“You can't give Mom those years back.””

Arthur's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Then stop running.””

Arthur looked at him.

“I’m not running.””

“Then tell me everything.””

Arthur looked around the hall.

Hundreds of people were still watching.

“Not here.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Of course.””

Arthur's voice broke.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

Marcus shook his head.

“How did you want me to find out?””

Arthur looked toward Evelyn.

“After I was dead.””

Marcus went silent.

Arthur continued.

“I had written everything down.””

“You mean the envelope?””

“No.””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small brass key.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

“A storage box.””

“Where?””

“Under the old security office.””

The Dean immediately stepped forward.

“That building was sealed years ago.””

Arthur nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What's inside?””

Arthur stared at the key.

“Everything Calvin made me hide.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then let's go.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if you open that box, there's no going back.””

Marcus took the key.

“I'm already past that.””

They left the graduation hall together.

Evelyn followed.

Daniel followed her.

Lorraine came behind them.

The Dean stayed for a moment, looking at the empty stage.

Then he quietly removed his academic robe.

Underneath, his hands were shaking.

The old security building stood behind the university library.

The door was covered with a rusted chain.

Arthur unlocked it.

Inside smelled of dust, concrete, and old paper.

A single fluorescent light flickered overhead.

Marcus looked around.

“You worked here?””

Arthur nodded.

“For years.””

He moved to the back wall.

There was an old metal locker.

Arthur inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked.

Inside sat a black box.

Marcus stared at it.

Arthur placed it on the table.

“This is where I kept the things I couldn't destroy.””

Marcus opened the lid.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Letters.

Receipts.

A child's hospital bracelet.

Three small footprints stamped on a hospital card.

Marcus picked up the card.

Three babies.

Three footprints.

He stared at them.

Daniel stood beside him.

Elias's name was written on one.

Marcus's on another.

The third had no name.

“What happened to the third record?”” Marcus asked.

Arthur swallowed.

“Calvin took it.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted the child gone.””

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Why would he care?””

Arthur looked at her.

“Because the third baby wasn't supposed to exist.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur pulled out a letter.

“Read this.””

Marcus unfolded it.

It was from Calvin.

The first sentence made his blood run cold.

*Arthur, if you want Marcus to live a normal life, the third child can never be connected to this family.*

Marcus looked up.

“Why?””

Arthur stared at the floor.

“Because Calvin believed the third child wasn't mine.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“What?””

Arthur continued.

“He thought you had been with someone else.””

Evelyn's face went white.

“That isn't true.””

“I know.””

“Then why did he believe it?””

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“Because of the timing.””

Marcus read the next paragraph.

Calvin had demanded a blood test.

The hospital records showed conflicting information.

One child's blood type didn't match Arthur's.

Another did.

The third record was missing.

Marcus's hands shook.

“So one of us wasn't your biological child?””

Arthur didn't answer.

Daniel looked at him.

“Which one?””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stared.

“You don't know?””

“I never got the final test.””

“Why?””

“Because Calvin destroyed it.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“He accused me of cheating?””

Arthur nodded.

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

“Then why did you let him take my child?””

Arthur looked at her.

“Because he threatened to expose something.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Arthur reached into the box.

He pulled out a newspaper clipping.

The headline was faded.

But one word remained clear.

*Fraud.*

Marcus read the article.

It described a financial investigation involving Calvin Brooks's company.

At the bottom was Arthur's name.

Marcus looked up.

“You were the whistleblower.””

Arthur nodded.

“You reported him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why was he controlling you?””

“Because he knew where the evidence was.””

Arthur pointed toward the box.

“I had copies.””

Marcus stared.

“You kept them?””

“For twenty-four years.””

The Dean entered the room.

“I knew about the investigation.””

Marcus turned.

“Then why didn't you help him?””

The Dean looked ashamed.

“Because Calvin threatened my family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So everyone was afraid of him.””

The Dean nodded.

“Until he died.””

Marcus looked back into the box.

At the bottom was one final envelope.

No name.

No seal.

Just a date.

The date of Marcus's birth.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Marcus read the first line.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Marcus read it again.

*DNA TEST RESULTS — THREE INFANTS.*

His heart pounded.

He continued.

*Infant A: Arthur Williams — match.*

*Infant B: Arthur Williams — match.*

*Infant C: NO MATCH.*

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel stared back.

Then at Arthur.

“Which one is me?””

Arthur couldn't answer.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Marcus…”

Marcus's eyes moved to the bottom of the page.

There was one final handwritten sentence.

*Infant C belongs to another man.*

The room went silent.

Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.

“Who?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I don't know.””

Arthur looked at her.

“You do.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Arthur pointed to the document.

“You told me his name.””

Evelyn backed away.

“I was confused.””

“You weren't.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Dad.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

“The third baby's father…”

He stopped.

Marcus waited.

Arthur finally whispered:

May you like

“Was Calvin Brooks.””

And behind them, the storage-room door slowly swung shut.
