Chapter 3: The Secret My Wife Thought I Would Never Discover

I didn't speak for several seconds.

The washing machine hummed behind me.

From the dining room, I could hear Lily quietly asking Carter to come upstairs.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself.

"What happened the night Noah was born?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

I held up the letter.

"Then why does Emily think there's something I need to know?""

"Because she has always hated me.""

"That's not an answer.""

Vanessa stepped inside and reached for the papers.

I moved them out of her reach.

"Don't.""

Her expression changed.

"Marcus, you're letting a woman who hasn't been part of your daily life for years manipulate you.""

I stared at her.

"She gave birth to my son.""

"And then she left!""

"She moved because we divorced. You know that.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Do you really believe you know everything about your marriage?""

That question stopped me.

I remembered the final months before Emily and I separated.

The arguments.

The late-night phone calls.

The sudden distance.

Emily had told me she couldn't keep living in a house where she felt watched and judged.

At the time, I thought she meant my mother, who had never approved of her.

Now I wondered whether Vanessa had been involved earlier than I knew.

I looked at the printed messages again.

The date was two months before Emily moved out.

I read the conversation carefully.

*Vanessa:* You need to stop calling Marcus.

*Emily:* He's my husband.

*Vanessa:* Not for long.

*Emily:* What are you talking about?

*Vanessa:* I know about the conversations you've been having with Daniel.

My stomach tightened.

Daniel was Emily's younger brother.

He had helped us during the difficult months after Noah's birth.

There had never been anything suspicious between them.

I scrolled down.

*Emily:* Daniel is my brother. What is wrong with you?

*Vanessa:* Marcus won't believe that when I show him the pictures.

*Emily:* What pictures?

*Vanessa:* You should think very carefully about what you want your son to grow up knowing.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What pictures?""

She said nothing.

"Vanessa.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Those messages were taken out of context.""

"Then give me the context.""

She wiped her cheek.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

"From her!""

I lowered the papers.

"Emily never cheated on me.""

Vanessa's silence was immediate.

It was also revealing.

I felt my stomach twist.

"Did you tell me she was seeing someone else?""

Vanessa looked at the floor.

"Marcus...""

"Did you?""

She finally spoke.

"I showed you what I had.""

"What you had were photographs of Emily and her own brother?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

I remembered the argument.

The night Emily stood in our bedroom doorway, crying, while I demanded to know why she had been lying to me.

She had insisted the photographs were innocent.

She had begged me to listen.

And I had believed someone else instead.

I had believed Vanessa.

"Where did you get those photographs?"" I asked.

She crossed her arms.

"I don't remember.""

"You don't remember?""

"It was years ago!""

"Funny. You remembered enough to use them against her.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"I was trying to keep your family together!""

I stared at her.

"You destroyed my marriage.""

She shook her head.

"Your marriage was already falling apart.""

"No. Emily and I were having problems. You made sure we never had the chance to fix them.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

I placed the documents on top of the washing machine and reached for my phone.

"What are you doing?"" she asked.

"Calling Emily.""

"No.""

She moved toward me.

I stepped back.

"Don't.""

"Marcus, please. Just let me explain.""

"You've had two years to explain.""

I called Emily.

She answered after the second ring.

"Marcus?""

Her voice sounded cautious.

"Emily, I found your son's birthday present.""

There was a pause.

"Did Noah get it?""

"Yes. But I also found your letter.""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "You opened the keepsake box?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why didn't you tell me about the messages?""

Emily exhaled shakily.

"Because every time I tried, Vanessa told me you wouldn't believe me.""

My jaw tightened.

"What happened the night Noah was born?""

Another silence.

Then Emily said something I wasn't prepared for.

"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully. Vanessa wasn't a stranger who suddenly appeared in our lives after the divorce.""

I looked toward my wife.

"What do you mean?""

"She was working at the hospital where Noah was born.""

My fingers went cold.

"What?""

"She was a patient coordinator. She knew your family before you ever introduced her to me.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Emily continued.

"I recognized her when she came to your house after the wedding. I tried to tell you, but she convinced you I was jealous.""

My mind raced.

Vanessa had told me she met me through a mutual friend at a charity dinner.

She had never mentioned working at the hospital.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

"I did, Marcus. Three times. You said I was inventing things.""

I closed my eyes.

I remembered those conversations.

Emily standing in our kitchen, holding Noah against her shoulder.

Emily asking me whether I knew Vanessa had worked at the hospital.

And me accusing her of being paranoid.

My voice dropped.

"What exactly did Vanessa do?""

Emily began crying.

"After Noah was born, there was a medical emergency. You were outside speaking to the doctor. I was still recovering, and the nurses had taken Noah for additional checks.""

I gripped the phone.

"Yes.""

"Vanessa was there.""

I looked at my wife.

Emily continued.

"She came into my room and told me something terrible had happened. She said Noah had been transferred to another hospital because of a problem with his records.""

My heart hammered.

"What records?""

"She told me there had been a mistake with the paperwork. She said you knew about it and that I shouldn't panic.""

I could barely breathe.

"Emily, what are you saying?""

"She gave me a document to sign. She said it was a routine consent form.""

I looked down at the legal paper from the box.

It was a hospital document with a signature at the bottom.

Emily's signature.

"Then what happened?"" I whispered.

"Later, I found out the document wasn't what she told me it was.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was now standing perfectly still.

Emily's voice broke.

"Marcus, that document was a request to change the emergency contact and authorized pickup information for Noah.""

I stared at the paper.

The signature looked real.

But the name printed beneath it was not mine.

It was Vanessa's.

"Why would she do that?""

Emily took a shaky breath.

"Because someone had already told her she could become part of your family.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"What does that mean?""

"Marcus, before Noah was born, Vanessa had been seeing someone connected to your family. She knew about your finances, your marriage problems, and even the name we had chosen for our baby.""

I looked at my wife.

"Who?""

Emily hesitated.

Then she said:

"Your mother.""

My phone nearly slipped from my hand.

My mother, Margaret, had died six months earlier.

She had always adored Vanessa.

She had also been the person who encouraged me to remarry when I was struggling after the divorce.

I had never questioned why.

Emily's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Marcus, there's something else. The document in that box isn't the original.""

I stared at the paper.

"What?""

"Vanessa kept the original because it has a second page. A page that proves she didn't just interfere with our marriage.""

My eyes moved toward the washing machine.

"Where is it?""

Emily was crying openly now.

"She used it to make sure that if anything ever happened to you, she would have the right to take Noah.""

I slowly turned toward Vanessa.

She wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was looking at the hallway.

And then she whispered:

"Your mother promised me I would be Noah's legal guardian.""

A heavy silence fell over the house.

I lowered my phone.

"Why would my mother promise you that?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

But before she could answer, my phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent me a photograph.

It showed my late mother sitting at a restaurant table with Vanessa.

Between them lay a folder.

On the folder was a handwritten label:

*NOAH — GUARDIANSHIP AGREEMENT.*

The message beneath the photograph contained only one sentence.

*Ask your wife why your mother paid her $75,000 before she died.*
