Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew My Wife's Secret
I spent that night sitting beside Noah's bed.
He had fallen asleep with the bedroom light on, one hand wrapped around the little wooden keepsake box Emily had sent him.
Every few minutes, he stirred.
Each time, I leaned closer and reassured him that I was there.
At 2:17 a.m., my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*Ethan wants to speak to you. He says he has something that belongs to Noah.*
I stared at the screen.
I hadn't met Ethan.
I had barely known he existed until a few hours earlier.
Yet somehow, this ten-year-old boy had become connected to a secret involving my late mother, my wife, and nearly four million dollars.
I replied.
*Where can I meet him?*
Daniel answered immediately.
*Tomorrow. I'll bring him to the coffee shop beside the public library. Don't tell Vanessa.*
I looked at Noah.
Then I typed:
*I'll be there.*
The following morning, I dropped Noah at school and drove to the library.
Daniel was already waiting.
He looked tired.
His hair was uncombed, and he had dark circles beneath his eyes.
Beside him sat a small boy wearing a green hoodie.
Ethan.
He had dark brown hair and the same serious expression Vanessa wore when she was angry.
Daniel stood.
"Marcus.""
I shook his hand.
"Thank you for meeting me.""
Ethan looked up.
"You're Noah's dad?""
"Yes.""
He studied my face.
"Mom says you're a good man.""
I glanced at Daniel.
He gave me a small nod.
I sat down.
"Your mom and I have a lot to discuss.""
Ethan looked at his shoes.
"Is Noah okay?""
"He's fine.""
"Good.""
He reached into his backpack and removed a folded piece of paper.
"My grandmother gave me this.""
I took it.
The handwriting was unmistakably Margaret's.
Ethan,
When you are older, you may understand why some things had to remain private. You have a brother named Noah. He is a good boy, and I hope you will love him.
There is something important I need you to know.
Your mother did not choose to keep you away from him. I made that decision.
I stopped reading.
Daniel leaned forward.
"There's more.""
I unfolded the second page.
I believed Noah's inheritance needed to remain within the family. I also believed Ethan should have a chance to benefit from it.
But Vanessa has made choices I did not approve of.
My stomach tightened.
The letter continued.
If she ever tells you that the money was intended for her, do not believe her.
I looked at Ethan.
"Did your grandmother give you this?""
He nodded.
"She gave it to me before she died.""
"Why didn't you show your father?""
"Because Mom told me not to.""
Daniel sighed.
"Vanessa didn't know Ethan had the letter. He kept it hidden.""
I looked down at the page.
There was one final paragraph.
The second account is not controlled by Vanessa. It belongs to someone else. Someone who was supposed to protect both boys.
I looked up.
"Who?""
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"But there's something else.""
He opened his phone and showed me a photograph.
It was a scanned page from an old trust agreement.
The original beneficiaries were Noah and Ethan.
The trustee was a woman named Margaret Hayes.
The successor trustee was listed as:
*Emily Hayes.*
I stared.
"Emily?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother never wanted Vanessa controlling the money. She wanted Emily to become the independent trustee after her death.""
I looked again.
That made no sense.
Why would Margaret arrange everything to keep Emily away from Noah if she intended to give her control of his inheritance?
Daniel pointed to the bottom of the page.
"Look at the date.""
The agreement had been signed eighteen months before Margaret died.
The amendment naming Vanessa as trustee had been created later.
I examined the signatures.
There were three.
Margaret.
Vanessa.
And a witness.
Adrian Cole.
"Why would Emily be removed?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"That's what I don't understand.""
Ethan quietly interrupted.
"Grandma said Mom had to do something first.""
I turned toward him.
"What something?""
Ethan hesitated.
"She said Mom had to give her a letter.""
"What letter?""
"I don't know. But I heard them arguing.""
Daniel looked at his son.
"When?""
"At Grandma's house. The day before she went to the hospital.""
I leaned forward.
"What did you hear?""
Ethan swallowed.
"Grandma said, 'You promised me you would tell Marcus the truth.''"
My heart began pounding.
"What did your mother say?""
Ethan looked down.
"She said, 'If I tell him, he'll leave me.''"
I sat back.
Daniel was watching me carefully.
"Marcus, I think Margaret was trying to make Vanessa confess something.""
"What?""
"I don't know.""
Ethan reached into his backpack again.
This time, he removed a small black USB drive.
"Grandma gave me this too.""
I stared at it.
"What's on it?""
"She said it was a recording. She told me to give it to Noah when he was old enough.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
"Let's hear it.""
We went to Daniel's apartment.
He opened his laptop and connected the drive.
There were three audio files.
The first was dated eight years earlier.
The second was dated six years earlier.
The third had been recorded only three weeks before Margaret died.
I clicked the last one.
My mother's voice filled the room.
"Vanessa, I have given you enough time.""
Then came my wife's voice.
"I did everything you asked.""
"No. You did what benefited you.""
"I raised Noah. I gave Marcus a family.""
"You used my grandson to get access to his inheritance.""
There was a long silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"You promised me the money.""
"I promised you security. Not ownership.""
"What's the difference?""
"The difference is that Noah is my grandson. He comes before you.""
Vanessa's voice became sharp.
"And what about Ethan? You said he deserved a future too.""
"He does. But not at the expense of Noah.""
I leaned closer to the laptop.
Then my mother said something that made my blood run cold.
"Tell Marcus the truth about the hospital.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I can't.""
"You have to.""
"He'll never forgive me.""
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before you helped Richard alter the records.""
There was a loud sound.
A chair scraping across the floor.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Richard didn't just change the paperwork.""
My entire body went rigid.
My mother answered.
"I know.""
Vanessa's next words were almost inaudible.
"He changed something else.""
I looked at Daniel.
Neither of us moved.
The recording continued.
My mother asked:
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa started crying.
"The baby.""
A long silence followed.
Then my mother spoke.
"Don't you dare tell me Noah wasn't the baby Emily gave birth to.""
Vanessa answered:
"That's not what I mean.""
My heart hammered.
"What do you mean?"" my mother's recorded voice demanded.
Vanessa whispered:
"Richard took something from Noah's original medical file. Something that proves what happened before Marcus arrived.""
The recording suddenly stopped.
I stared at the screen.
"That's it?""
Daniel clicked the file again.
Nothing.
He opened the second recording.
It contained only static and a few seconds of muffled conversation.
Then he opened the first.
My mother's voice returned.
But this time, she wasn't speaking to Vanessa.
She was speaking to someone else.
"Emily, I know what you discovered. And if you tell Marcus, I'll make sure you never see Noah again.""
A younger Emily answered.
"Margaret, you can't keep threatening me.""
My mother's voice became cold.
"Watch me.""
Emily began crying.
Then she said:
"You can take the money. You can take the house. But you cannot make me believe I imagined what happened in that hospital.""
I stopped the recording.
My hands were shaking.
"What did Emily discover?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
"I think she knows what was removed from Noah's medical file.""
Ethan suddenly spoke.
"There's another thing.""
We both turned.
He looked frightened.
"Grandma told me that if something happened to her, I should tell Noah where to find his real birthday present.""
I frowned.
"His real birthday present?""
Ethan nodded.
"She said it was hidden inside the house where Mom keeps her old things.""
Daniel looked confused.
"What house?""
Ethan answered quietly.
"The house where Mom used to live with Grandpa.""
I knew that address.
It was Dr. Reed's old property.
He had died several years earlier, and Vanessa had told me the house had been sold.
But Ethan shook his head.
"It's still there.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Mom takes me there sometimes.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
Ethan looked toward Daniel.
Then he said:
"She says she's looking for the missing hospital file.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What missing file?""
Ethan lowered his voice.
"The one with Noah's real birth records.""
My phone suddenly rang.
Emily.
I answered immediately.
"Emily?""
Her voice was frantic.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"With Daniel. Why?""
"Listen to me. I just received a call from the hospital archives.""
My chest tightened.
"What happened?""
"They found the original file.""
I stood.
"That's good, isn't it?""
Emily began crying.
"No, Marcus. It's not.""
"Why?""
"Because the file contains a second medical report that was never included in Noah's discharge records.""
I looked at the laptop.
Then at Ethan.
Emily whispered:
"Your mother wasn't investigating whether Noah was your biological son.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then what was she investigating?""
Her answer came slowly.
"Whether Noah was supposed to survive the night he was born.""
The call ended.
And before I could process those words, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his face went white.
"What?"" I asked.
He lowered the phone.
"Vanessa has gone to the old hospital.""
I stood immediately.
"Why?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because someone has already accessed Noah's original medical file.""
He swallowed.
"And the person who signed it out was you, Marcus.""
I stared at him.
"I've never touched that file.""
Daniel turned his phone toward me.
On the screen was a photograph of an authorization form.
My name was printed at the bottom.
My signature appeared beneath it.
May you like
And beside the signature was a date from three weeks earlier.
The day my mother died.
