Chapter 11: The Truth About Lily
Nobody spoke after Victor said those words.
Her.
One word.
But it carried thirty years of pain.
Thirty years of missing memories.
Thirty years of a father who had forgotten his own daughter.
Lily looked at me.
Not angry.
That somehow made it worse.
Children were supposed to be angry when adults failed them.
They were supposed to scream.
Demand answers.
But Lily just looked hurt.
I crouched beside her.
“Lily.””
She wiped her eyes quickly.
“I’m okay.””
I shook my head.
“No, you’re not.””
She looked down.
“My mom said you would say that.””
“Your mom was right.””
A small smile appeared.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
I looked at Victor.
“You knew where she was all this time?””
He nodded.
“From a distance.””
“Why?””
“Because staying away was the only way to keep her safe.””
I stood.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
His honesty surprised me.
“I expect you to hate me.””
The room became quiet.
Victor continued.
“I deserved that.””
I studied him.
For the first time, I saw something beyond the mystery.
Regret.
Real regret.
“What happened that night?””
Victor looked at the floor.
“You were going to reveal everything.””
“What everything?””
“The people behind the operation.””
“The people who used my club?””
“Yes.””
“Who were they?””
Victor hesitated.
“They weren’t one group.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you were fighting something bigger than one enemy.””
Elijah stepped forward.
“Tell him the rest.””
Victor looked at him.
“You still think he’s ready?””
Elijah answered:
“He has a right to know.””
Victor nodded.
“You were betrayed by someone close.””
My face tightened.
“Who?””
Victor looked at Marcus.
The room froze.
Marcus stepped back.
“What?””
I stared at Victor.
“Say it.””
Victor didn’t move.
“The person who gave them information…”
A pause.
“Was someone you trusted.””
My eyes slowly moved to Marcus.
“No.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Bear.””
I searched his face.
The man who had stood beside me for twenty-five years.
The man who had protected my club.
My brother.
Victor continued.
“I’m not saying he wanted what happened.””
Marcus looked angry.
“You’re lying.””
“Maybe.””
Victor looked at me.
“But the evidence was clear.””
I turned to Marcus.
“Did you know?””
His face changed.
That was enough.
The room went silent.
“Marcus.””
He looked away.
My chest tightened.
“How much did you know?””
He swallowed.
“I knew there were things you wanted to forget.””
My voice became colder.
“Did you know about Lily?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than any betrayal I had imagined.
Lily looked between us.
Confused.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Bear, listen.””
“No.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt worse.
“I watched you lose thirty years.””
Marcus’s eyes filled with regret.
“And I hated myself every day.””
I looked away.
The room felt too small.
Too many truths.
Too many people who had decided what was best for me.
“What else don’t I know?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“My mom knows.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She knows the rest.””
Victor looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Lily reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“My mom told me not to give this to you until you remembered.””
I took it.
My name was written on the front.
Bear.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Claire’s handwriting.
The first line made my heart stop.
Bear,
If you are reading this, it means Lily found you before they did.
I kept reading.
I won’t explain everything in this letter because paper can be stolen.
Memories can be changed.
People can be threatened.
But one thing cannot be erased.
You loved her.
My eyes moved to Lily.
The letter continued.
You were never the monster they tried to make you believe you were.
You were the man who chose to lose himself so your daughter could live.
Then came the final sentence.
The one that changed everything.
But there is one truth you still don’t know.
The man you thought betrayed you…
Was not the one who caused your memories to disappear.
I looked up.
Victor.
Elijah.
Marcus.
Everyone was silent.
Because they knew.
The letter wasn’t finished.
There was another page.
May you like
But it wasn’t there.
The second page had been removed.
