Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Prison Door

The motorcycle engine outside stopped.

Nobody moved.

The entire clubhouse held its breath.

I stood near the entrance, staring at the door, feeling the weight of thirty years of unanswered questions pressing down on my shoulders.

Marcus stepped beside me.

“Bear.””

I looked at him.

“Keep Lily behind you.””

He nodded.

The others moved quietly, positioning themselves around the room.

Not because we wanted a fight.

Because we had learned a long time ago that the people who carried secrets rarely came alone.

The door opened slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

Wearing a worn jacket that looked like it had survived more storms than most people.

He wasn’t carrying a weapon.

He wasn’t looking for trouble.

He was looking at me.

And the second our eyes met, I knew.

Not because I remembered him.

Because my body did.

My chest tightened.

My hands went cold.

The stranger looked at the photograph on the table.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Bear Jackson.””

His voice was rough.

Like he hadn’t spoken those words in years.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man swallowed.

“My name is Elijah Carter.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at me.

I didn’t understand why.

Then I saw his face.

Recognition.

“You know him?”” I asked.

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“No.””

But his expression said something else.

Not recognition.

Fear.

Elijah noticed.

“You don’t remember me either.””

I stared at him.

“Should I?””

He looked down.

“That’s what they wanted.””

I hated that answer.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

You don’t remember.

They wanted you to forget.

The words were becoming a cage.

“What happened thirty years ago?”” I demanded.

Elijah looked at Lily.

“Is she your daughter?””

My jaw tightened.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.””

His face softened.

“Then you need to hear the truth.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small object.

A key.

Old.

Rusty.

He placed it on the table.

“This belonged to you.””

I stared at it.

A strange feeling moved through me.

A memory.

A door.

A locked room.

A promise.

Then it disappeared.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Elijah looked at me.

“The key to a storage unit.””

I frowned.

“What storage unit?””

“The one you created before you disappeared.””

I felt anger rise.

“I never created a storage unit.””

Elijah nodded slowly.

“You did.””

“Stop saying things like I’m supposed to believe them.””

My voice echoed through the clubhouse.

Lily flinched.

I immediately lowered my tone.

“Sorry.””

She shook her head.

“It’s okay.””

But I hated that she was getting used to adults losing control.

Elijah watched me carefully.

“You really don’t remember.””

“No.””

He sighed.

“Then the damage was worse than we thought.””

“Who did this to me?””

Elijah didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

He looked toward the window.

“People who were afraid of what you knew.””

“What did I know?””

Elijah looked at the photograph of me holding Lily.

“You knew that your daughter was alive.””

The words stopped me.

I stared at him.

“She was supposed to die?””

Elijah nodded.

“That was the story they created.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who are they?””

Elijah’s eyes hardened.

“The same people who put me in prison.””

My stomach tightened.

“You.””

He nodded.

“I was the man in the prison drawing.””

I looked at him.

The image from Lily’s paper flashed in my mind.

The prison gate.

The man standing outside.

My scar.

My jacket.

My past.

“You were the person I visited.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elijah looked at Lily.

“Because I was the only one who knew the truth.””

The room became quiet.

I felt like I was standing at the edge of something huge.

Something I had spent decades avoiding without knowing it.

“What truth?””

Elijah took a slow breath.

“That night, you didn’t disappear.””

“Then what happened?””

“You were betrayed.””

My eyes narrowed.

“By who?””

He looked at me.

And before he answered, the clubhouse windows shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Everyone dropped.

Marcus pulled Lily down.

I turned toward the street.

A car sped away into the darkness.

Elijah grabbed the table for balance.

“They found me.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

May you like

His face went pale.

“The people who made you forget.””
