Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Never Nia

Renee Carter had one second to decide whether to believe the man on the phone or the woman standing beside the little girl.

Then the woman reached for Aaliyah.

Renee moved.

“Step away from the child!””

The woman’s smile disappeared. She released Aaliyah’s shoulder and raised both hands, the silver badge still caught between two fingers.

Damon pulled Aaliyah behind him.

“Who are you?”” he demanded.

The woman looked at him with cold amusement.

“You really don't recognize me?””

“No,” Damon said.

“And I don't care who you are. Stay away from her.””

Renee kept her eyes on the badge.

It bore her name.

Again.

Another counterfeit credential, another attempt to turn her identity into a weapon.

“Put the badge on the floor,” Renee ordered.

The woman obeyed, placing it on the polished tiles.

“Now tell me your name.””

The woman glanced at Aaliyah.

“Ask the child.””

Aaliyah shook her head frantically.

“That's not my mommy.””

The woman sighed.

“Of course it is, sweetheart. We've been together all morning.””

“No!”” Aaliyah screamed.

“My mommy has a little scar on her thumb. She got it when she cut herself opening a can.””

The woman looked down at her hands.

Then she slowly closed her fingers.

Renee noticed the movement.

“Hands open,” she ordered.

The woman ignored her.

Instead, she looked directly at Renee.

“You're making this much harder than it needs to be.””

“Your name. Now.””

A long silence followed.

Then the woman said, “Simone Bell.””

Damon's face drained of color.

“Simone?””

She nodded.

“But you're supposed to be in Safehouse Twelve.””

“I was.””

“What happened?””

Simone glanced toward the station entrance.

“Your friends happened.””

Renee kept her stance steady.

“Why are you pretending to be Nia?””

“Because the real Nia is dead.””

Aaliyah began sobbing.

“No. Mommy is alive. Mommy called me.””

Simone's expression softened, but only briefly.

“Someone called you using your mother's voice.””

“That was her!””

“No, sweetheart. It wasn't.””

Renee felt the weight of the situation settle over her. She had to protect Aaliyah, establish who Simone was, and determine whether Marcus's call had been genuine.

“Simone, if you are who you say you are, tell me something about Marcus that isn't in any public record.””

Simone looked at her.

“He had a habit of tapping three times on a door before entering a room. He said it gave frightened people a chance to prepare themselves.””

Renee remembered.

Marcus had tapped three times on the hospital room door before entering Room Twelve.

It wasn't proof, but it was consistent with what she remembered.

“Where is he?”” Renee asked.

“Alive. For now.””

“Why did he say you were responsible for his death?””

“Because someone wants you to believe that.””

“Who?””

Simone's gaze shifted toward the departure boards.

“You still haven't understood, have you? This isn't about one corrupt officer. It's about a system that learned how to manufacture the truth.””

She reached into her handbag.

Renee raised her voice.

“Slowly.””

Simone withdrew a small envelope and placed it on the information counter.

Inside was a photograph of a man lying on a hospital bed.

His face was partly obscured by medical equipment, but the silver wedding band on his left hand was unmistakable.

Marcus.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date, followed by a single sentence.

*THE BODY THEY BURIED WAS NEVER HIS.*

Renee looked up.

“Who was the man in the morgue?””

Simone swallowed.

“My brother.””

Damon stared at her.

“You mean Marcus's brother?””

“No. My brother.””

She turned toward Aaliyah.

“Marcus was adopted. He had a brother named Daniel, and Daniel died before anyone could identify him. Someone used his body to stage Marcus's death.””

Renee studied the photograph.

“Why would they do that?””

“Because Marcus had evidence that could expose the people selling protected witness information. They couldn't risk putting him on trial, and killing him publicly would have created too many questions. So they erased him instead.””

Aaliyah clung to Damon.

“Where's my daddy now?””

Simone's expression changed.

“He's waiting for us.””

“Where?””

“At the transit authority building.””

Renee shook her head.

“No. We're not going anywhere until an independent unit confirms your identity and establishes that Marcus is alive.””

Simone laughed bitterly.

“An independent unit? Renee, every request you've made this morning has passed through the same compromised system.””

“Then we'll contact federal investigators directly.””

“Using what phone?””

Renee's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*INCOMING VIDEO CALL: MARCUS BELL.*

She answered immediately.

Marcus's face appeared on the screen.

He looked exhausted. A small bandage crossed his forehead, and his left arm was secured in a sling.

“Renee,” he said.

“Is Aaliyah there?””

Aaliyah rushed forward.

“Daddy!””

Marcus's expression broke.

“Oh, baby.””

Aaliyah pressed both hands against the phone.

“Why didn't you come home?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

“You said you'd come back.””

“I know.””

“You promised!””

“I know, sweetheart. I know.””

His voice cracked.

For several seconds, neither spoke. Aaliyah cried, and Marcus watched her with the helplessness of a father who could see his child but couldn't reach her.

Then Marcus looked at Renee.

“Get her out of the terminal.””

“Where are you?””

“Not somewhere I can tell you.””

“Marcus, we need to establish that you're alive and safe.””

“I understand. But you need to hear the rest first.””

His gaze shifted toward Simone.

“Did she tell you about Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Then you know why the death report was changed.””

“Not everything.””

Marcus nodded.

“The original report identified Daniel. Someone replaced his fingerprints, altered the medical records, and transferred the identification to my name. The person who authorized it had access to the hospital system and our protected witness database.””

“Price?””

“Price carried out the transfer. Webb concealed the records. Harris protected the investigation from scrutiny.””

“And who ordered it?””

Marcus looked directly at Renee.

“The person who first contacted you that night.””

Renee remembered the unidentified caller, the urgent voice, the order to move Marcus.

“Who was it?””

Marcus took a shaky breath.

“Denise Walker.””

Renee stared at the screen.

“Denise?””

“She was the dispatcher who coordinated the transfer. She knew the system well enough to make every order look legitimate.””

“Why would she do it?””

“Because she believed she was protecting Aaliyah.””

Renee looked at the child.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus continued.

“Years ago, before Aaliyah was born, Simone discovered that a witness had been murdered after their location was leaked. That witness was connected to a case involving Aaliyah's biological father.””

Renee frowned.

“Marcus, you're her biological father.””

“Yes,” he said.

“But the records say otherwise.””

Nia's voice came through the phone suddenly.

“Marcus, don't.””

Renee froze.

A second face appeared on the screen.

The real Nia Bell.

Alive.

Her hair was shorter than in the family photograph, and a healing scar crossed her forehead. But the little mark on her thumb was unmistakable.

Aaliyah screamed.

“Mommy!””

Nia began crying.

“Baby, I'm here.””

Renee looked from the screen to Simone.

The woman standing beside them lowered her head.

Marcus spoke again.

“The woman in the terminal is Simone. She's been impersonating Nia to draw out the people who were hunting us. The real Nia was moved to a secure location after the attack three days ago.””

Aaliyah shook her head, overwhelmed.

“Why did everybody lie to me?””

Marcus's eyes filled.

“Because we were trying to keep you alive, and we made terrible decisions about how to do it.””

Nia pressed her hand against the screen.

“We should never have made you carry our secrets, sweetheart. I'm sorry.””

Renee looked at Simone.

“And the woman who died three days ago?””

Simone answered quietly.

“My sister.””

The terminal seemed to become painfully still.

“Your sister?”” Renee repeated.

“An informant who helped us uncover the scheme. They killed her because they believed she was Nia. We used the confusion to move the real Nia before they could reach her.””

Damon shook his head.

“This is insane.””

“Yes,” Simone replied.

“It is.””

Renee looked at Marcus.

“Then why did you say Nia was responsible for your death?””

“Because the message was designed to make you distrust everyone. The person who sent it wanted you to arrest Simone, hand over Aaliyah, and walk away believing the case was closed.””

Renee glanced toward the counterfeit badge on the floor.

“And the second file?””

Marcus nodded.

“It's in the station's information system. I uploaded it before the first broadcast. It contains the original communications log, the unaltered hospital transfer order, and the recording of Denise authorizing the move.””

“Can we access it?””

“It's already playing.””

Every information screen in the terminal changed.

The first showed the original transfer order.

The second displayed the hospital records.

The third showed an audio transcript with Denise Walker's name at the top.

Then a recording began.

Denise's voice rang through the terminal.

“Transfer Marcus Bell under Officer Carter's credentials. Keep the child in Room Twelve. If anyone asks, the order came from the detective.””

A second voice answered.

“What if Carter questions it?””

Denise replied, “She won't. She trusts the system.””

Renee felt the words strike harder than any accusation.

The recording continued.

“And if Bell survives?””

Denise's answer was chilling.

“Then make sure nobody remembers him.””

The screens went blank.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then the terminal doors opened.

A group of federal investigators entered, led by a Black woman in a charcoal suit. She identified herself, displayed her credentials, and ordered everyone to remain in place while the evidence was secured.

This time, Renee verified the credentials independently before cooperating.

Sergeant Webb was detained. Detective Harris was located attempting to leave the building. Officer Price was apprehended outside the terminal after station security identified him from the camera footage.

Denise Walker was arrested later that afternoon.

The original communications logs and the recording from Marcus's phone established that Renee's credentials had been copied and used without her knowledge. The investigation also confirmed that Daniel's identity had been substituted in the death records to conceal Marcus's survival.

Renee's name was cleared of knowingly authorizing Marcus's transfer, although she still had to answer for the gaps in her recollection and the statement she had signed.

She answered every question.

She withheld nothing.

And for the first time since that terrible night, she stopped trying to protect the version of herself who had believed the paperwork.

She began protecting the truth.

Three months later, Renee stood beside the information booth in the same bright terminal.

Travelers crossed the polished floor. Sunlight poured through the tall windows. The departure boards displayed ordinary destinations, and a little boy chased his rolling suitcase while his father hurried after him.

Aaliyah walked toward Renee, holding both her parents' hands.

Her navy cardigan had been replaced by a red jacket, but she still carried the same small backpack.

Marcus looked healthier, though he moved carefully with a lingering injury. Nia stood beside him, her fingers intertwined with his.

Aaliyah stopped in front of Renee.

"Officer Carter?""

Renee smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Did you ever figure out why Daddy tapped three times before opening a door?""

Marcus laughed softly.

"He wanted to make sure nobody was scared when he came in.""

Aaliyah considered that.

Then she looked at Renee.

"Next time I'm scared, can I find you?""

Renee knelt and met her eyes.

"Anytime you need help, you find a safe adult or a uniformed officer you can verify. And you never have to keep a dangerous secret just because someone tells you it's for your own good.""

Aaliyah nodded.

Then she hugged Renee.

Renee closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the small arms around her shoulders.

She had spent months wondering whether one mistake had destroyed a family.

Now she understood that the truth had been buried beneath hundreds of smaller decisions—each one justified as necessary, each one making the next lie easier.

The badge had never made anyone trustworthy.

The truth had.

As Aaliyah pulled away, she reached into her backpack and handed Renee a folded piece of paper.

"What is this?"" Renee asked.

"Daddy wrote it for you.""

Renee opened it.

Marcus's handwriting covered the page.

You couldn't remember everything that night, Renee. But you remembered enough to keep my daughter safe when it mattered most. Thank you for choosing her over the story they wanted you to believe.

Renee folded the letter carefully.

Across the terminal, Marcus held open his arms.

Aaliyah ran to him.

Nia followed, wrapping them both in an embrace beneath the bright afternoon sunlight.

Renee watched them for a moment before returning to her duties.

The terminal continued moving around her.

Trains arrived. Travelers departed. Families reunited.

And somewhere beyond the tall windows, the city carried on, unaware that a little girl had helped expose a conspiracy by remembering one small detail everyone else had tried to erase.

A silver badge.

A room number.

Three taps on a door.

Sometimes the truth didn't arrive with a confession or a dramatic arrest.

Sometimes it arrived in the trembling voice of a child who refused to forget.

And sometimes, the most important promise a police officer could make wasn't that she would always know the right answer.

It was that she would never stop looking for the truth.
