Chapter 5: The Promise Renee Couldn't Remember
Renee had faced armed suspects, violent confrontations, and people whose anger could fill an entire room.
None of those experiences had prepared her for the sight of Nia Bell standing ten feet away, holding a recorder that might destroy her career—or prove she had been framed.
Nia looked thinner than the photograph on Damon's phone. Her gray coat hung loosely around her shoulders, and a small cut crossed the side of her forehead. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were alert.
Aaliyah took one uncertain step toward her.
"Mommy?""
Nia's expression broke.
"Oh, baby.""
She started forward.
Renee lifted one hand.
"Stop right there, ma'am.""
Nia stopped immediately.
Aaliyah's face crumpled.
"Why won't you let Mommy come to me?""
"I'm trying to keep everyone safe," Renee said gently.
"She's my mother!""
"I know.""
"Then let her hug me!""
The little girl's cry echoed beneath the tall windows.
Nia's hands trembled around the recorder.
"Please," she said.
"She's been through enough.""
Renee held her position.
"If you're Aaliyah's mother, tell me something only you would know.""
Nia nodded quickly.
"When Aaliyah was three, she swallowed a plastic bead from my sewing kit. We spent four hours in the emergency room, and she told the nurse the bead was a tiny pearl she'd stolen from a mermaid.""
Aaliyah gave a strangled little laugh through her tears.
"Mommy, you told that story wrong.""
Nia smiled painfully.
"You said the mermaid gave it to you.""
Aaliyah ran to her.
Renee allowed the reunion but stayed close, watching Nia's hands and the surrounding crowd. Nia dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.
"I'm sorry," she whispered into Aaliyah's curls.
"I'm so sorry.""
Aaliyah clung to her.
"You said Uncle Damon was dangerous.""
"I know.""
"You said Daddy was dangerous.""
Nia shut her eyes.
"I know, sweetheart.""
"You said Officer Carter couldn't be trusted.""
Nia looked up at Renee.
"I had reasons.""
Renee's jaw tightened.
"Then explain them.""
Nia held Aaliyah for another moment before gently releasing her.
"Baby, stay beside Officer Carter. I need to speak with her.""
Aaliyah grabbed her mother's hand.
"No more secrets.""
Nia looked at her daughter for a long time.
Then she nodded.
"No more secrets.""
She stood and held the recorder out to Renee.
"Marcus recorded a conversation the night he died. He gave me a copy and told me to keep it safe.""
"What's on it?""
"Your voice.""
Renee stared at the recorder.
"My voice saying what?""
Nia's eyes filled.
"That you would take him somewhere safe.""
Renee felt a sharp pressure behind her ribs.
She remembered a phone call. A man's breathing. The urgent insistence that someone was watching him.
But she couldn't remember agreeing to meet him.
"Play it," she said.
Nia glanced at Webb.
"Not here.""
Webb gave a short laugh.
"That's convenient.""
Nia turned toward him.
"You don't get to speak to me.""
"You've been missing for thirty-six hours, Mrs. Bell. Your daughter is alone in a train station, and you're walking around carrying stolen evidence. You expect us to believe you're the victim?""
Nia stepped closer.
"My husband is dead because of people like you.""
Webb's face hardened.
"Careful.""
"No. You be careful."" Nia raised the recorder.
"I have your voice on this device. I have the names you thought Marcus destroyed. And I have proof that the official report was changed after he died.""
The surrounding travelers had begun watching again.
Webb glanced toward the officers.
"Take her into custody.""
Neither officer moved.
The female officer spoke first.
"On what charge?""
"Obstruction. Evidence tampering. Whatever you need.""
"That isn't how this works," she replied.
Webb looked at Renee.
"Are you going to let her walk away with evidence from an active investigation?""
Renee held out her hand to Nia.
"I need you to explain where you got the recording and whether you have another copy.""
Nia placed the recorder in her palm.
"Marcus made three copies.""
"Three?""
"One he kept. One he gave me. One he left with someone he trusted.""
"Who?""
Nia's eyes shifted toward Renee.
"You.""
Renee stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"Marcus said you were the only person who understood what he was trying to prove.""
"I never received a recording.""
"Maybe you don't remember receiving it.""
Webb interrupted.
"Enough of this nonsense. Carter, hand me the device.""
Renee closed her fingers around the recorder.
"No.""
His face flushed.
"You are compromising an investigation.""
"Then let Detective Harris determine that.""
"You think Harris is clean?""
The question came out so sharply that even Webb seemed surprised by his own words.
Nia looked at him.
"There it is.""
Webb turned toward her.
"What?""
"The truth slipping out before you can stop it.""
He moved toward her.
The male officer blocked his path.
"Sergeant, stay where you are.""
Webb stared at him.
"You'd better know what you're doing.""
"I'm starting to understand what I'm doing," the officer replied.
Renee looked down at the recorder.
It had a small display and three numbered files.
She pressed the first.
A man's voice emerged, slightly distorted but unmistakable.
Marcus Bell.
"If you're hearing this, it means something went wrong. Renee, I need you to understand that I never wanted to involve you.""
Renee stopped breathing.
Marcus continued.
"The information in the files proves that someone has been selling witness locations. The first file shows the transactions. The second shows who authorized the access. The third—"
A sudden burst of static swallowed the next few seconds.
Then Marcus's voice returned.
"—is the only one that can prove who changed the report after my death.""
Renee glanced at Nia.
"After his death?""
Nia nodded.
"The recording was assembled from several pieces. Marcus wanted to make sure the truth survived even if one file disappeared.""
The voice continued.
"If Carter has the second file, don't let her hand it over to anyone. Not even me.""
Renee frowned.
"Why would he say that?""
Nia shook her head.
"Keep listening.""
Marcus's breathing became audible.
Then another voice spoke.
Renee recognized it immediately.
Her own.
"Marcus, I can't protect you if you keep hiding things from me.""
A pause.
"I know," Marcus answered.
"That's why I need you to trust me.""
Renee's fingers began to tremble.
Her recorded voice spoke again.
"Where do you want me to take you?""
"Somewhere no one can find us.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Renee stared at the device.
She remembered the words now.
Not the entire conversation, but fragments: the phone vibrating on her kitchen table, rain against the windows, a man begging for help.
She remembered putting on her uniform.
She remembered driving somewhere.
And she remembered waking the next morning with a splitting headache and a message saying Marcus Bell had been found dead.
But the hours between those memories remained blank.
"I didn't kill him," she whispered.
Nia watched her carefully.
"I didn't say you did.""
"You said I was the second person who helped.""
"I said you were involved.""
"There's a difference.""
"A very important one.""
Renee turned toward Webb.
"Where was Marcus found?""
Webb didn't answer.
"Sergeant, where was he found?""
"At the scene documented in the report.""
"Which was?""
"A service road outside the city.""
Renee shook her head.
"No. I remember taking him somewhere else.""
Webb's eyes narrowed.
"What did you say?""
"I remember a hospital entrance. He was standing beside me. He was alive.""
Nia's face went pale.
"You remember the hospital?""
"Pieces of it.""
"Then remember this.""
She stepped closer and spoke quietly enough that only Renee and Damon could hear.
"Marcus told me that if you ever remembered the hospital, I should ask you what happened to the little girl in Room Twelve.""
Renee felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Room Twelve.
Aaliyah was watching them.
"Mommy?"" she asked.
"What little girl?""
Nia didn't answer.
Renee searched her memory.
White walls. Fluorescent monitors. A nurse pushing a cart. A small hand gripping the edge of a hospital blanket.
And a voice.
A little girl's voice.
Please don't tell him where I am.
Renee staggered backward.
Damon caught her elbow.
"Officer?""
She pulled away, breathing hard.
"I need a minute.""
Nia looked terrified.
"You remember something.""
Renee shook her head, trying to separate memory from imagination.
"I remember a child.""
"What child?""
"I don't know.""
Nia gripped the recorder.
"Marcus said the girl was the reason everything started.""
Renee looked at Aaliyah.
The little girl stood beside her mother, clutching the navy cardigan at her chest.
"What does that have to do with Aaliyah?""
Nia opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the recorder emitted a short electronic beep.
The display changed.
A fourth file appeared.
No one had touched the controls.
Renee looked down.
The file was labeled with a date from the night Marcus died.
Beneath it, a line of text appeared.
*PLAY ONLY WHEN AALIYAH IS PRESENT.*
Damon stepped closer.
"That's impossible.""
Nia's face went white.
Renee looked at the child.
"Aaliyah, sweetheart, I need you to stay with your mother while I listen to something. Is that okay?""
Aaliyah shook her head.
"No.""
Renee crouched.
"Why not?""
The girl's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Daddy said that if the fourth recording ever played, I had to tell you what happened in Room Twelve.""
Renee felt her heart pound.
"What happened there?""
Aaliyah stared directly into her eyes.
"I was the little girl in the hospital.""
May you like
Then she whispered the words that shattered everything Renee thought she remembered.
"And you were the officer who promised to take me home.""
