The Girl Who Stopped a Hero / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Protection Plan

The file appeared on the screen.

Nobody touched the keyboard.

Nobody moved.

Yet somehow, everyone in the room knew it was meant to be found.

*MAYA CARTER — FINAL PROTECTION PLAN*

The words stared back at them.

A message from a mother who had vanished.

A plan created for a daughter who was never supposed to be standing in a military command center, surrounded by strangers and secrets.

Maya looked at the screen.

Then she looked at General Harris.

The man she had trusted.

The man her mother’s final recording had just accused.

“Is that about me?””

Her voice was small.

But everyone heard it.

General Harris did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

Maya stepped back.

“You know something.””

The general looked at her.

“I know your mother was trying to protect you.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The room became silent.

Maya had learned something important that day.

Adults often answered different questions than the ones they were asked.

She looked at Colonel Reed.

“Do you know what’s in that file?””

Reed shook his head.

“No.””

“Are you lying?””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not offense.

Pain.

“No.””

Maya watched him carefully.

For the first time, she believed him.

Not completely.

But enough.

Captain Olivia Brooks moved toward the computer.

“The file is encrypted.””

General Harris looked at her.

“Can you open it?””

Brooks nodded.

“Maybe.””

“How long?””

She glanced at the screen.

“If Elena designed it herself?””

A pause.

“Not long.””

Everyone watched as Brooks connected a secure drive.

The computer began processing.

A small progress bar appeared.

Five percent.

Ten percent.

Twenty.

Maya stood beside the stage, unable to look away.

She wanted answers.

But she was afraid of them too.

Because every answer about her mother seemed to create three more questions.

Reed approached slowly.

“Maya.””

She turned.

“What?””

“There’s something you need to know.””

She almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Every adult.

Every officer.

Every person who had information she deserved to have.

“What now?””

Reed looked at the medal case.

“I didn’t receive that medal because I was a hero.””

The confession shocked her.

He continued.

“I received it because someone wanted me to look untouchable.””

General Harris turned.

“Colonel.””

“No.””

Reed shook his head.

“Enough secrets.””

The room became still.

Reed looked at Maya.

“Your mother discovered something about an operation that happened years ago.””

“What operation?””

“I can’t tell you everything.””

“Why?””

“Because some things are dangerous even after they’re exposed.””

Maya crossed her arms.

“My mom disappeared because of those things.””

Reed looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“What happened?””

Reed took a breath.

“Your mother found evidence that someone inside the military had been manipulating reports.””

General Harris watched him carefully.

“Manipulating what reports?””

Reed hesitated.

“Mission reports.””

“Why?””

“Because someone wanted certain people to be remembered as heroes.””

The words landed heavily.

Maya looked at the medal.

“So the medal was fake?””

“No.””

Reed looked at it.

“The actions were real.””

“Then why hide things?””

“Because the truth about how those actions happened would destroy people.””

Captain Brooks looked away.

Like she already knew.

Maya noticed.

“You knew too.””

Brooks didn’t answer.

Maya’s voice became sharper.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

The computer beeped.

Everyone turned.

The encryption screen disappeared.

A video file opened.

The title appeared.

*PLAY ONLY IF MAYA IS SAFE*

Maya froze.

“She knew.””

Reed whispered.

“She knew exactly what would happen.””

Captain Brooks pressed play.

The screen showed Elena again.

This time, she was sitting in a dark room.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was tired.

But her eyes were focused.

“Maya.””

The moment her mother said her name, Maya broke.

She covered her mouth.

Elena smiled sadly.

“If you’re seeing this, I’m sorry.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“Don’t apologize.””

The video continued.

“I know you’re probably scared.””

Maya wiped her tears.

“But I know you.””

Elena smiled slightly.

“You always ask questions when adults tell you not to.””

A small, broken laugh escaped Maya.

Even now, her mother knew her.

“That is why I chose you.””

The room went quiet.

Maya stared.

“Not because you’re fearless.””

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“Because you keep going even when you’re afraid.””

The video paused for a moment.

Then Elena continued.

“There are three people you need to understand.””

Everyone leaned forward.

“First.””

A picture appeared beside her.

Colonel Marcus Reed.

“He is responsible for something.””

Reed closed his eyes.

“But he is not responsible for my disappearance.””

Maya looked at him.

Second.

A new image appeared.

General Harris.

The room changed.

General Harris stared at the screen.

Elena’s voice continued.

“General Harris knows more than he admits.””

Maya looked at him.

The general said nothing.

“But he is not the person who took me.””

A breath of relief moved through the room.

Then came the third picture.

The image appeared.

And Maya immediately recognized the face.

Her stomach dropped.

Because it was someone she knew.

Someone who had been kind to her.

Someone who had brought her juice when she was waiting backstage.

Someone who had smiled and told her everything would be okay.

The picture showed a senior officer.

Commander Daniel Vaughn.

Maya whispered:

“No.””

Captain Brooks looked shocked.

“Impossible.””

Elena’s voice continued.

“The person behind everything is Commander Daniel Vaughn.””

The room erupted.

Officers began talking.

General Harris stepped toward the screen.

“No.””

Reed stared at the image.

“He couldn’t have.””

Elena continued.

“Vaughn knows about the hidden evidence. He knows about the investigation. He knows where I was taken.””

Maya stopped.

Where I was taken.

Not where she was.

Taken.

Her mother was alive when the video was recorded.

The thought hit her.

“She was alive.””

Nobody answered.

But nobody needed to.

The evidence was there.

Elena continued.

“Maya, if you are watching this, there is one more thing you need to know.””

The video became distorted.

The screen flickered.

Elena looked suddenly worried.

“If Commander Vaughn finds out you have this file, he will come for—”

The video cut.

Everyone froze.

The last words never came.

Captain Brooks tried restarting it.

Nothing.

The file was damaged.

Maya stared at the black screen.

“Come for what?””

No answer.

Then the lights went out again.

This time, nobody moved.

Because they all knew.

Someone was inside.

A sound came from the hallway.

A slow clap.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the entrance.

Calm.

Confident.

Wearing a perfect uniform.

Commander Daniel Vaughn.

He smiled.

“Beautiful speech.””

Nobody spoke.

Vaughn looked around the room.

At the frozen screen.

At Maya.

At the phone in her hand.

Then he smiled wider.

“Your mother always did know how to leave a dramatic message.””

General Harris stepped forward.

“Commander Vaughn.””

Vaughn looked at him.

“General.””

The room tightened.

Reed moved closer to Maya.

Vaughn noticed.

Interesting.

“Colonel Reed.””

He smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

Maya looked at Reed.

“Protecting who?””

Vaughn’s smile disappeared.

Just slightly.

Then he looked directly at Maya.

“Your mother never told you the most important part.””

Maya held the phone tighter.

“What part?””

Vaughn took one step forward.

“The part about why she chose you.””

Nobody breathed.

Maya stared at him.

“Why?””

Vaughn looked at the old phone.

Then at her.

“Because you’re not just the person she wanted to protect.””

A pause.

“You’re the person who can expose everyone.””

The room went silent.

Then Maya’s phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

Not from an unknown number.

Not from her mother.

From a saved contact.

A contact that should have been impossible.

May you like

The name on the screen was:

*MOM*.
