Chapter 6: The Voice That Should Not Exist
The name on the screen was impossible.
*MOM.*
Maya stared at it.
Her fingers stopped moving.
Her breathing stopped.
For a moment, the entire world became that single word.
Not the officers.
Not the shouting.
Not Commander Daniel Vaughn standing across the room.
Only the name.
Her mother.
A contact that should have been silent forever.
A name that had not appeared on her phone since the night Elena Carter disappeared.
“Maya,” Colonel Reed whispered.
But she barely heard him.
The phone vibrated again.
Once.
Then again.
A new message appeared beneath the name.
*ANSWER. I ONLY HAVE A FEW MINUTES.*
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’s alive.””
Nobody spoke.
The words were too powerful.
Too dangerous.
Too impossible.
General Harris stepped forward carefully.
“Maya.””
She looked up.
“She’s alive.””
The general’s face changed.
Not disbelief.
Not exactly.
Something closer to hope mixed with fear.
“Let me see the phone.””
Maya immediately pulled it closer.
“No.””
The general stopped.
She looked around the room.
At everyone.
At the people who had hidden things from her.
“No more secrets.””
Her voice shook.
“But this is my mom.””
Colonel Reed looked at General Harris.
Then at Maya.
“She’s right.””
Everyone turned.
Reed continued.
“Let her answer.””
Commander Vaughn laughed softly.
It was not a friendly laugh.
It was the sound of someone who already believed he had won.
“You really think that’s Elena?””
Maya looked at him.
Her anger returned.
“What did you do to her?””
Vaughn tilted his head.
“Your mother was brilliant.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“It’s a warning.””
Captain Brooks stepped between them.
“Commander, step away from the child.””
Vaughn looked at her.
“You still think you’re protecting people.””
Brooks’s expression hardened.
“And you still think you’re untouchable.””
The room became tense.
Maya looked down at the phone again.
The message waited.
*ANSWER.*
She pressed the button.
The call connected.
For two seconds, there was only static.
Then—
A breath.
Maya froze.
Because she knew that sound.
She had spent three weeks listening to silence.
Three weeks hoping for one impossible thing.
Now she heard it.
Her mother breathing.
“Maya?””
The voice was weak.
But real.
Maya covered her mouth.
“Mom?””
Everyone in the room went still.
The phone speaker carried Elena’s voice.
“Oh my God.””
A quiet sob escaped her.
“Maya, you answered.””
Maya cried openly now.
“Where are you?””
“I don’t have much time.””
“I don’t care. Where are you?””
“Maya, listen to me.””
“No!””
The word came out louder than she expected.
Her voice broke.
“You promised you would come back.””
Silence.
Then Elena whispered:
“I know.””
Maya closed her eyes.
She had wanted to hear those words.
But hearing them hurt.
“I waited.””
“I know.””
“I thought you were gone.””
“I know.””
The pain in Elena’s voice made everyone look away.
Even Reed.
Even Harris.
For a moment, there was no mystery.
No investigation.
No medals.
Just a mother and daughter who had been separated.
Then Elena’s voice changed.
“Maya, you need to leave.””
Maya opened her eyes.
“What?””
“Right now.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows.””
Everyone looked toward Vaughn.
He did not react.
That scared Maya more.
“Who?””
Elena became quieter.
“Commander Vaughn.””
The room exploded.
Officers moved.
Captain Brooks reached for her weapon.
General Harris ordered:
“Secure the exits.””
But Vaughn only smiled.
“You’re listening to a frightened woman.””
Maya ignored him.
“Mom, where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, they’ll know.””
Maya looked around.
“They already know.””
“No.””
Elena’s voice became urgent.
“Not everyone.””
The sentence confused her.
“What does that mean?””
“Maya, the phone.””
She looked down.
“What?””
“Your phone is not just a phone.””
Everyone became silent.
Reed stepped closer.
“What did you put inside it, Elena?””
A pause.
Then Elena answered:
“Something that proves everything.””
Vaughn’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
General Harris noticed.
“You know about it.””
Vaughn looked at him.
“Everyone in this room knows something.””
Maya held the phone tightly.
“What did you hide?””
Elena breathed.
“The truth.””
“That’s not enough.””
“Maya—”
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You disappeared. Everyone lied. I stood on a stage in front of hundreds of people because nobody would tell me anything.””
Silence.
Then Maya said the words she had been holding inside for weeks.
“I deserve the truth.””
The phone was quiet.
Then Elena whispered:
“You do.””
A sound came from Elena’s side of the call.
A door.
Someone approaching.
Her breathing changed.
“Maya, listen carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“The file on the phone has a second layer.””
Maya looked at the old smartphone.
“What second layer?””
“A recording.””
“From who?””
Elena hesitated.
“From the person who started everything.””
Everyone looked at Vaughn.
But Elena continued.
“Not Vaughn.””
The room froze.
Maya looked confused.
“What?””
“Daniel Vaughn is part of it.””
A pause.
“But he’s not the beginning.””
Vaughn’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked angry.
Elena continued quickly.
“Maya, you need to find the original recording before—”
A loud sound interrupted her.
Like something crashing.
Elena gasped.
“Maya, hide the phone!””
The call became chaotic.
Someone shouted in the background.
Maya heard footsteps.
Then Elena whispered:
“I love you.””
The line went silent.
The call ended.
Maya stared at the screen.
“No.””
She pressed the call button.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
“She’s gone.””
Nobody corrected her.
Because everyone knew.
Not gone forever.
But gone again.
General Harris looked at Vaughn.
“Commander.””
Vaughn finally stopped pretending.
His face became cold.
“You have no idea what you’ve uncovered.””
Reed stepped forward.
“You kidnapped her.””
Vaughn looked at him.
“You still don’t understand your role in this.””
Reed’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Vaughn smiled.
“You spent years protecting a secret you didn’t even know existed.””
The words hit Reed.
Maya looked between them.
“What secret?””
Vaughn looked at her.
“Ask him.””
Everyone turned to Reed.
The colonel stood frozen.
General Harris stared.
“Marcus?””
Reed said nothing.
“Colonel.””
Slowly, Reed looked at Maya.
And she saw it.
The same fear.
The same regret.
The same expression from the ceremony.
He knew something.
Something Elena never told her.
Something Vaughn wanted exposed.
Maya stepped closer.
“What secret?””
Reed swallowed.
“I made a mistake.””
Her heart sank.
“What mistake?””
He looked at the medal.
Then at the old phone.
Then at Maya.
“Your mother found out I was responsible for the reason her investigation started.””
Nobody moved.
Maya’s voice became quiet.
“Responsible how?””
Reed looked like the answer physically hurt him.
“Because years ago…”
He stopped.
The room waited.
Then every screen in the command center suddenly turned on.
A message appeared.
Not from Elena.
Not from Vaughn.
From an unknown source.
One sentence.
*ASK COLONEL REED WHY MAYA’S FATHER DISAPPEARED.*
Maya froze.
Her mother’s disappearance.
The medal.
The secrets.
The hidden files.
All of it suddenly connected to one person she had never asked about.
Her father.
She slowly looked at Reed.
“You knew my dad?””
Reed closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, Maya knew the answer before he spoke.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“I was there the night he vanished.””
The room went completely silent.
May you like
And on the screen, another message appeared.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT MAYA’S FAMILY HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD.*
