Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For a moment, Maya forgot how to breathe.

The man standing at the entrance looked nothing like a ghost.

He looked alive.

Confident.

Powerful.

His silver hair was perfectly styled. His expensive suit looked untouched by time. His expression carried the calm arrogance of someone who had walked into a room knowing nobody could stop him.

But everyone else looked like they had seen a nightmare come true.

Daniel stared at him.

His lips parted, but no words came out.

“My father…”

The man smiled slightly.

“Yes, Daniel.””

The sound of his voice made Daniel step backward.

“No.””

The old man tilted his head.

“Is that really how you greet your father?””

Daniel shook his head.

“You died.””

A heavy silence filled the banquet hall.

The man looked around at the guests.

“Apparently, my timing was better than I expected.””

Maya looked from him to Daniel.

She couldn’t understand.

This was the man in the photograph.

The man who stood beside her mother.

The man everyone thought was gone.

But Daniel looked at him like he was seeing a stranger.

“You let us believe you were dead.””

The man’s expression didn’t change.

“I allowed people to believe what they wanted.””

Arthur stepped forward.

His voice was filled with anger.

“You abandoned your family.””

The man looked at Arthur.

“And you hid my granddaughter.””

The words shocked Maya.

Granddaughter.

Her grandfather.

The man who was supposed to be part of her life.

The man who had been missing.

But instead of feeling warmth, she only felt fear.

Because everyone in the room was afraid of him.

Daniel looked furious.

“You knew about Maya?””

The man looked at her.

“I knew about her before anyone else.””

Maya’s heart sank.

Before anyone else.

The words felt impossible.

“You knew I existed?”” she asked.

The man looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

For the first time, the man paused.

Only for a second.

But Maya saw it.

A hesitation.

A crack in the perfect image.

Then it disappeared.

“Because I had reasons.””

Maya stared at him.

“Reasons?””

Her voice shook.

“I spent my whole life wondering why my family didn’t want me.””

The man said nothing.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t important.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought maybe my mother left because she didn’t love me.””

The room became painfully quiet.

The man looked away.

And that tiny movement told Maya more than any answer could.

Daniel stepped between them.

“You don’t get to stand here and act like you’re the victim.””

The old man looked at his son.

“You know nothing about what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Tell me why my sister disappeared. Tell me why my niece grew up without a family. Tell me why my entire life has been built on lies.””

The man looked around.

“Not here.””

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“Still worried about appearances?””

The man’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful, Arthur.””

“No.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Not anymore.””

The old man studied him.

“You’ve always been too loyal.””

“And you’ve always mistaken fear for respect.””

The guests watched silently.

Nobody had ever seen Arthur speak to him that way.

Maya realized something.

This man wasn’t just powerful.

He had controlled this family for years.

Even when he wasn’t there.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You knew he was alive.””

Vanessa looked down.

The silence was enough.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You knew.””

“I found out later.””

“How much later?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“How much later, Vanessa?””

“Three years after Claire disappeared.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And you said nothing?””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

The old man stepped forward.

“I came here because this has gone on long enough.””

Arthur looked at him.

“You came because you lost control.””

A small smile appeared on the man’s face.

“Did I?””

He looked at Maya.

“She has my blood.””

Maya immediately stepped back.

“I’m not yours.””

The statement surprised everyone.

The old man looked at her.

Maya held his gaze.

“I’m not a name. I’m not an inheritance. I’m not a piece of this family’s history.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“I’m a person.””

For the first time, the man seemed genuinely interested.

“You have Claire’s courage.””

Maya froze.

The way he said her mother’s name was different.

Not like Marcus.

Not like Arthur.

There was regret there.

Or maybe guilt.

She couldn’t tell.

“Did you love her?”” Maya asked.

The question caught him off guard.

Nobody expected it.

The man looked at the photograph.

At Claire’s younger face.

“Yes.””

Maya waited.

“But?””

His jaw tightened.

“I failed her.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Daniel looked at his father.

“You admit that?””

The man nodded slowly.

“I made choices that destroyed my family.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Choices?””

Everyone looked at him.

“You didn’t just make choices.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“You covered up what happened.””

The old man looked at Marcus.

“You should be careful with accusations.””

Marcus laughed.

“After eleven years?””

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus looked at him.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

Marcus glanced at Maya.

Then nodded.

“Claire discovered your father was moving money through illegal accounts.””

Daniel looked at his father.

The old man remained silent.

“She confronted him.””

“No,” the old man said.

The entire room turned.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“She confronted the wrong person.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t rewrite history.””

The old man ignored him.

“Claire was emotional. She made decisions without understanding the consequences.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re blaming my mother.””

The man looked at her.

“I’m explaining what happened.””

“No.””

Maya shook her head.

“You’re explaining why you think it wasn’t your fault.””

Nobody spoke.

The old man studied her.

For a moment, Maya saw something unexpected.

Pride.

Like he was impressed.

But that only made her angrier.

“You don’t get to be proud of me.””

His expression faded.

Maya continued.

“You lost that right.””

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Not by blood.

But by choice.

And something changed in his face.

He looked at Maya differently.

Not like a mystery.

Like family.

He turned back to his father.

“Where is Claire?””

The old man didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is my sister?””

Still nothing.

Arthur’s voice became quiet.

“She never left.””

Everyone looked at him.

Maya turned.

“What?””

Arthur looked at the old man.

“She was taken.””

Daniel froze.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The old man’s expression hardened.

Arthur continued.

“Claire survived the accident.””

Maya’s heart stopped.

“Accident?””

Arthur nodded.

“She was alive.””

The room went silent.

“Then where is she?””

Arthur looked at Maya.

His eyes filled with sadness.

“That is the question nobody wanted answered.””

Maya’s hands trembled.

Her mother.

Alive?

Dead?

Somewhere?

She couldn’t understand.

The old man suddenly spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

His calm mask was gone.

“Some truths should stay buried.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

The old man looked at Maya.

“Because if she knows everything…”

He paused.

And for the first time, fear appeared on his face.

“…she will find out what really happened to her mother.””

Maya stepped forward.

“I want to know.””

The old man shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“I understand perfectly.””

Her voice was steady.

“My whole life, everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””

She picked up the photograph.

“But nobody asked me.””

The old man stared at her.

Then Maya noticed something.

Something small.

Something nobody else saw.

His eyes moved toward the photograph.

Not toward Claire.

Toward the corner.

There was another detail.

A symbol drawn in the background.

A mark Maya had seen before.

On the necklace her mother left behind.

Her breath caught.

“My mother had this symbol.””

The old man’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Daniel noticed.

“What symbol?””

Maya turned the photograph around.

Everyone looked.

And the old man whispered:

“No.””

Because he knew exactly what it meant.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What is it?””

Marcus answered.

“The reason Claire disappeared.””

Maya stared at the symbol.

A simple mark.

A hidden message.

A secret her mother had left behind.

And beneath it, written in tiny handwriting, were four words.

May you like

Four words that changed everything.

*She is still alive.*
