Chapter 6: The Mother Behind the Locked Door

The words stared back at Maya.

*She is still alive.*

For a few seconds, she convinced herself she had read it wrong.

Her hands shook as she traced the faded handwriting with her eyes.

The letters were small.

Careful.

Written by someone who knew time was running out.

Her mother.

Claire.

Alive.

The thought was too big to fit inside her mind.

For ten years, Maya had carried a single story in her heart.

Her mother was gone.

Her father was a mystery.

Her family was somewhere far away, living a life that didn’t include her.

But now everything had changed.

The woman she had mourned her entire life might still be breathing somewhere.

“Maya…”

Daniel’s voice was gentle.

She looked at him.

His eyes were filled with the same confusion she felt.

“Is that real?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was terrifying.

Maya turned toward Arthur.

“You knew?””

Arthur’s face fell.

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“A possibility?””

Her voice cracked.

“You let me believe she was dead.””

Arthur looked away.

“I thought she was.””

Maya shook her head.

“But you said she was taken.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I found evidence that Claire survived the accident.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Because the people who hid her were still watching.””

The room became quiet again.

Maya looked around.

At all the adults who had spent years making decisions about her life.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But nobody had ever asked what she wanted.

“Where is she?”” Maya asked.

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was all she needed.

“You know.””

Arthur looked at her.

“I know where she was last seen.””

“Where?””

His silence stretched.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Blackwood Manor.””

The name made several people react.

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?””

Arthur looked at Marcus sharply.

“You shouldn’t have said that.””

Marcus ignored him.

“It was an old property owned by the Carter family. Your father used it for private meetings.””

Daniel looked at his father.

The old man remained still.

“You know this place?””

The old man’s expression hardened.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.””

Maya looked at him.

“It matters to me.””

The man stared at her.

For the first time, she saw something beyond arrogance.

Fear.

“You should leave this alone.””

Maya stepped forward.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

The old man looked surprised.

“I said no.””

Her voice trembled, but she didn’t stop.

“My whole life, people have told me what I can’t know.””

She held the photograph tightly.

“My mother spent years protecting me.””

She looked at him.

“So now I’m going to find out why.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel moved beside her.

“I’m coming with you.””

Maya looked at him.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes.””

He glanced at the old man.

“I do.””

The old man laughed softly.

“You have no idea what you’re walking into.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I’ve spent my entire life believing I knew my family.””

He shook his head.

“Turns out I knew nothing.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

She looked different now.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Just tired.

“Don’t go.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Maya.

“Because if you find Claire…”

She stopped.

Maya noticed.

“If?””

Vanessa looked down.

“If she survived…”

Her voice broke.

“She may not be the same person anymore.””

Maya felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“It means someone spent years making sure Claire couldn’t come home.””

Maya looked at him.

“Who?””

Marcus stared at the old man.

The answer was obvious.

But nobody wanted to say it.

The old man suddenly walked toward the table.

Everyone became tense.

He picked up the photograph.

“You all think you know what happened.””

His voice was calm again.

“But you don’t.””

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Then tell us.””

The man looked at Maya.

“Your mother was brilliant.””

Maya listened.

“She was stubborn. She believed truth could fix everything.””

He looked at the photograph.

“She didn’t understand that some truths destroy people.””

Maya frowned.

“You’re still blaming her.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“I’m blaming myself.””

That surprised everyone.

The old man placed the photograph down.

“I made one mistake.””

Arthur shook his head.

“One?””

The old man ignored him.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

The old man looked at him.

“I’m saying Claire wasn’t taken because of me.””

The room went silent.

“She was taken because someone else wanted what I had.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The old man looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa’s face immediately changed.

Maya noticed.

“You know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You do.””

“No, Maya.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You don’t understand.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at the floor.

Then finally at Maya.

“I was there the night Claire disappeared.””

The words shocked everyone.

Daniel stared.

“You were there?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I followed her.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew she was going to expose something.””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“What did you see?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The memory clearly hurt.

“I saw Claire arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Maya waited.

Everyone waited.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

Marcus froze.

“No.””

Maya looked between them.

“Marcus?””

Marcus’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I saw them.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

The old man watched silently.

Maya looked at him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“You knew Marcus was involved?””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What?””

The old man said nothing.

Arthur looked horrified.

“Don’t tell me…”

The old man’s silence confirmed it.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You were there?””

Marcus looked broken.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“I loved Claire.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You loved her.””

She emphasized the past tense.

Marcus looked at her.

“You don’t know what you saw.””

“I saw Claire hand you something.””

The room went still.

“What?”” Maya asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“She gave him a file.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“What was in the file?”” Daniel demanded.

Marcus didn’t answer.

Maya looked at him.

“Tell us.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then at Maya.

And something in his expression changed.

Pain.

Deep, old pain.

“The file contained proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Marcus swallowed.

“That your mother’s disappearance was planned.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel whispered:

“By who?””

Marcus looked at the old man.

Then at Vanessa.

Then finally at Maya.

“The person who planned it…”

He stopped.

A sudden noise interrupted him.

Everyone turned.

A phone on the table began ringing.

Nobody recognized it.

Except Arthur.

His face went pale.

Because the phone wasn’t anyone’s.

It was old.

The kind of phone nobody used anymore.

Maya stared.

“Whose phone is that?””

Arthur slowly approached.

His hands trembled as he picked it up.

The screen showed one name.

A name that made the entire room freeze.

*Claire.*

Arthur answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Weak.

Older.

But unmistakable.

“Maya?””

Maya’s entire body went still.

She couldn’t move.

She couldn’t breathe.

The voice continued.

“My baby…”

A tear fell down Maya’s face.

Because after ten years of silence…

She finally heard the voice she had dreamed about every night.

Her mother.

“I’m sorry,” Claire whispered.

Then the call suddenly changed.

A man’s voice replaced hers.

Cold.

Calm.

Threatening.

“If you want Claire alive…”

Everyone froze.

May you like

The man continued.

“Bring Maya to Blackwood Manor alone.””
