Chapter 7: The Man Who Watched From The Shadows

“He’s alive.””

The words didn’t make sense.

My brain repeated them over and over, but each time they sounded impossible.

Daniel Carter was alive.

The man whose face I had just discovered.

The man whose existence had been erased from my life.

The man I had spent eighteen years believing didn’t care enough to stay.

Alive.

Claire’s hand flew to her mouth.

“No.””

The detective looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled instantly.

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Before we discuss that, everyone needs to understand something.””

The auditorium was silent.

“Daniel Carter was not missing because he wanted to disappear.””

My eyes moved toward Marcus.

The detective continued.

“He was hiding because someone convinced him his life was in danger.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Who?””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the stage.

“We found him two hours ago after tracing a hidden message inside the recording.””

Claire looked confused.

“The recording?””

He nodded.

“Daniel knew someone might find it.””

He looked at the cracked phone in my hand.

“He embedded a location clue.””

My fingers tightened around the device.

A clue.

A hidden message.

A man trying to reach his daughter from the shadows.

“Why didn’t he come back?”” I asked.

The question came out before I could stop it.

The detective looked at me.

“He tried.””

My eyes burned.

“Then why?””

“Because he believed someone close to your family was watching him.””

The room changed.

Everyone looked at everyone else.

A family photo that had become a crime scene.

A graduation that became an investigation.

And now a stranger who wasn’t a stranger at all.

My biological father.

Hidden somewhere.

Waiting.

Claire stepped forward.

“Take me to him.””

The detective nodded.

“We will.””

Then he looked at me.

“But Lena needs to hear the rest first.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I need to see him.””

Claire reached for my hand.

“Lena…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I spent my whole life wondering why he left.””

I looked at the photograph still lying on the floor.

“I don’t want another explanation.””

A tear fell.

“I want him.””

Claire’s face softened.

“I know.””

She hugged me.

And for the first time in years, I felt like I was exactly where I belonged.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

But because someone had finally stopped hiding the truth from me.

Behind us, Marcus remained silent.

I looked at him.

“You knew he was alive?””

His face changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

My heart sank.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought he was.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I saw him after the accident.””

The room went silent.

Claire pulled away from me.

“What?””

Marcus looked at her.

“He came to me.””

The detective immediately focused.

“When?””

Marcus swallowed.

“The night after the crash.””

My stomach twisted.

“You never told anyone?””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

And for once, he didn’t have an excuse.

“Because I was afraid.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Afraid of what?””

Marcus looked away.

“Losing Lena.””

The answer made me angry.

Not because I didn’t understand.

Because I did.

That was the worst part.

He was afraid.

He loved me.

And his fear turned into control.

“You thought if he came back, I would leave you.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

A painful silence followed.

“You raised me.””

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

“But you were afraid I would choose him.””

His voice cracked.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“And instead of letting me choose…”

I looked around the room.

“You chose for me.””

Marcus looked down.

I had never seen him look small before.

Not once.

But now he did.

Detective Collins stepped closer.

“Tell us exactly what happened that night.””

Marcus stared at the ground.

Then he began.

“Daniel came to my house.””

The auditorium listened.

“He was angry.””

Claire shook her head.

“He was desperate.””

Marcus nodded.

“Maybe.””

He looked at the photograph.

“He had proof that I had taken money from Lena’s account.””

I looked away.

“And he said he was going to tell you.””

The detective asked:

“Did he threaten you?””

“No.””

Marcus answered immediately.

“No.””

That surprised everyone.

“He wanted Lena to know the truth.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“He said she deserved better.””

Claire whispered:

“He did.””

Marcus continued.

“He told me he was taking Lena away.””

My chest tightened.

“He said he was going to file for custody.””

“And?””

Marcus looked at me.

“And I panicked.””

The honesty hurt.

“I followed him.””

Nobody spoke.

“To where?””

“The highway.””

Claire went pale.

“The highway where I crashed?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

A wave of horror moved through the room.

“But I didn’t touch your car.””

Claire stared at him.

“Then what happened?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I saw another vehicle.””

The detective leaned forward.

“What vehicle?””

Marcus hesitated.

“A black SUV.””

My heart started racing.

“Who was driving?””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

She froze.

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn’t know at the time.””

Vanessa’s face lost all color.

“Marcus.””

The detective turned toward her.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“I didn’t mean for this.””

My stomach dropped.

“You?””

She looked at me.

“No.””

Her tears came quickly.

“I didn’t hurt your mother.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then Claire.

Then me.

“Because I know who did.””

Nobody moved.

Detective Collins stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because they’ll come after Lena.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“After me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“They always said you were the reason everything happened.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then finally said:

“The accident wasn’t about Claire.””

A pause.

“It wasn’t about the money.””

Everyone waited.

“It was about Lena.””

The words landed like a punch.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“No.””

Vanessa cried.

“They found out Daniel was coming back because of her.””

I shook my head.

“Who found out?””

Vanessa looked toward the auditorium doors.

The same doors where my mother had entered hours earlier.

The doors that had destroyed my old life.

Then she whispered:

“The person who has been controlling everything since the beginning.””

Detective Collins immediately turned.

“Who?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every phone in the auditorium buzzed at the same time.

Hundreds of screens lit up.

A message.

Everyone looked down.

Mine did too.

One unknown number.

One sentence.

My blood turned cold.

*STOP LOOKING FOR DANIEL CARTER.*

A second message appeared.

*OR YOU’LL LOSE ANOTHER PARENT.*

I looked up.

Claire was already staring at me.

Because she had received the same message.

The detective grabbed my phone.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

But nobody listened.

Because outside the auditorium windows…

A black SUV had just stopped in the parking lot.

And someone inside was watching us.
