Chapter 9: The Secret Vanessa Buried

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

Not because I was scared.

Because my hands stopped feeling like they belonged to me.

Five words were written on the back.

*Ask Vanessa what she did.*

Everyone was looking at her.

Including me.

Vanessa stood frozen near the stage.

Her face had lost all color.

She didn’t look angry.

She didn’t look surprised.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment for years.

“Vanessa.””

My voice barely came out.

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I had known her, she didn’t try to pretend everything was okay.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words broke something inside me.

Because they weren’t a denial.

They weren’t confusion.

They were an apology.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus immediately moved toward her.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t.””

Her voice trembled.

“I can’t keep lying.””

The auditorium became silent again.

Another secret.

Another truth hidden behind the people I trusted.

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“Mrs. Bennett, I need you to explain your connection to Daniel Carter.””

Vanessa looked at the detective.

Then at Claire.

Then finally at me.

“I knew Daniel before Marcus did.””

Nobody moved.

Claire stared.

“What?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I met him years ago.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

She swallowed.

“Before I met Marcus.””

The words shocked everyone.

Especially Marcus.

“You never told me that.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You never asked.””

A painful silence followed.

Claire stepped closer.

“Why would Ethan tell Lena to ask you?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“Because he knows the truth.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa looked down.

“The truth about why Daniel disappeared.””

The room waited.

She took a deep breath.

“I was the reason he left.””

My stomach dropped.

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I’m saying Daniel didn’t run because he was afraid of you.””

She looked at Claire.

“He ran because of me.””

The words hit like a wave.

I looked at the photograph again.

Daniel standing beside Vanessa.

A picture of two people who should have never been connected.

“When was this taken?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The night before Claire’s accident.””

Everything went quiet.

The night before.

The timeline suddenly changed.

Detective Collins took the photograph.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Who gave it to you?””

“I don’t know.””

The detective looked at her carefully.

“You need to start making sense.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I will.””

She looked at me.

“Because Lena deserves the truth.””

I didn’t know if I wanted it anymore.

But I needed it.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“I met Daniel when I worked for Ethan.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Ethan?””

“Yes.””

Detective Collins immediately focused.

“What was your role?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I handled accounts.””

The detective looked at the financial documents.

“The missing money.””

Vanessa nodded.

My chest tightened.

“You helped him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“At first, I didn’t know.””

She looked at me.

“I thought I was doing paperwork.””

Claire stared.

“You moved the money.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

A painful silence.

“Then I found out.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

She looked at the floor.

“Right before Daniel disappeared.””

I looked at the photograph.

“You found out Ethan was stealing?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel knew?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“He was going to expose Ethan.””

Claire whispered:

“And you stopped him.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

She looked horrified.

“No, I tried to help him.””

“Then why is there a picture of you together?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I warned him.””

“About what?””

“That Ethan knew.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel was going to meet Claire.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“To tell me the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

And the answer hurt everyone.

“Because Marcus found out.””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You followed him.””

Marcus went silent.

The detective watched closely.

Vanessa continued.

“You followed Daniel because you thought he was going to take Lena away.””

Marcus looked down.

“That’s not what happened.””

“But that’s what you believed.””

He didn’t answer.

I stared at my father.

Every person in my life had made choices around me.

But nobody had asked me what I wanted.

Vanessa turned back to me.

“After Marcus found Daniel, everything changed.””

“What happened?””

Her face tightened.

“Daniel disappeared.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Did Marcus hurt him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked surprised.

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked toward the open auditorium doors.

“The same person who has been cleaning up the mess ever since.””

Detective Collins said:

“Ethan Ward.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“But Ethan said Marcus was responsible.””

“He wanted you to believe that.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was easier to control.””

That sentence landed heavily.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You were scared.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

“You thought you were protecting Lena.””

She looked at me.

“But Ethan knew how to use that.””

I looked at Marcus.

“And you let him?””

Marcus looked away.

“I didn’t know how deep it went.””

Vanessa nodded.

“None of us did.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Detective Collins reached for his own phone.

He answered.

“Collins.””

His face changed within seconds.

“What?””

The room watched him.

Then:

“Where?””

A pause.

“I’m coming.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

He looked at Claire.

“We found Daniel.””

My heart stopped.

“He’s here?””

The detective nodded.

“He was brought to a safe location.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“Is he okay?””

“He’s alive.””

A broken sound escaped her.

Relief.

Pain.

Years of waiting.

Then Detective Collins looked at me.

“He asked for Lena.””

I couldn’t move.

Me.

After eighteen years.

The man who wrote me letters I never received.

The man who fought to come back.

He wanted to see me.

“Where is he?””

The detective hesitated.

“There’s something you should know first.””

Everyone waited.

“He didn’t want us to find him until he was sure you were safe.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

The detective looked at Marcus.

“Because Daniel believes the person who caused the accident is still close.””

My blood ran cold.

“Ethan?””

The detective didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered.

“What?””

The detective spoke slowly.

“Daniel said Ethan was only following orders.””

The room froze.

“Orders from who?””

Nobody moved.

The detective opened his folder.

Inside was a new photograph.

A recent one.

Taken only days ago.

A person standing outside my school.

Watching.

Waiting.

I took the photo.

And my heart stopped.

Because I recognized the person immediately.

Not Ethan.

Not Marcus.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had smiled at me during every family event.

Someone who had stood beside my father in every picture.

The detective looked at me.

“Lena…”

I stared at the photograph.

“Who is that?””

The answer came from behind me.

A voice I knew.

A voice that had comforted me.

A voice that had lied to me.

“I was hoping you’d never have to find out.””

I slowly turned around.

And standing at the auditorium entrance was Daniel Carter.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

May you like

And beside him…

Was the person in the photograph.
