Chapter 6: The Secret Evelyn Buried

St. Catherine's Hospital occupied a glass-and-stone building twenty minutes from the Vale mansion.

By 10:12 a.m., Detective Brooks had arranged for a secure room on the cardiac floor. Evelyn lay propped against white pillows, her silver hair neatly combed, an oxygen tube resting beneath her nose.

She looked smaller than she had in the mansion.

But her eyes were sharp.

When Adrian entered, she turned her face toward the window.

“Mother,” he said softly.

Evelyn didn't answer.

He approached the bed and pulled a chair beside her.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

She looked at him then.

“The truth has been sitting in front of you for years, Adrian. You simply preferred the version that made your life comfortable.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“You invited a stranger into my home, gave her access to our accounts, and planned to marry her while ignoring every warning I gave you.””

“I thought you were trying to control my life.””

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Adrian looked down at his hands.

Detective Brooks stood beside the door, a recording device on the table.

“Mrs. Vale, I need to ask you about the attempted attack this morning and the documents found in your safe.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I expected this day would come. I only hoped I would be dead before I had to explain it.””

“Why?””

“Because some truths don't free people. They simply reveal how many lives have been built on lies.””

Brooks opened her notebook.

“Let's start with Mara and Lena Ellison.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the steady rhythm of the heart monitor.

Then she began.

“Twenty years ago, my husband Marcus discovered that a senior accountant had been diverting money from one of our family companies. The accountant's name was Daniel Ellison. He had two daughters, Mara and Lena.””

“Were they involved in the theft?”” Brooks asked.

“No. They were barely out of college. But Daniel kept records of the transactions, and those records could have exposed several people who had been stealing from the company for years.””

“Who?””

Evelyn's gaze shifted toward Adrian.

“Your father was one of them.””

Adrian stood abruptly.

“No.””

Evelyn didn't blink.

“Marcus signed the original transfers. He believed he could replace the money before anyone noticed. When the losses grew too large, he blamed Daniel.””

“My father wasn't a criminal.””

“He was a frightened man who made a terrible decision and then spent years trying to hide it.””

Adrian paced toward the window.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed. Because I thought protecting his name would protect you. And because I was afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.””

Brooks leaned forward.

“What happened to Daniel Ellison?””

“He died before the case went to trial. The official report said it was an accident.””

“And you believe otherwise?””

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the blanket.

“I believe he was murdered.””

Adrian turned back.

“By whom?””

“I never found proof. But after Daniel died, the documents disappeared. Mara was arrested for fraud, and Lena vanished.

The charges against Mara destroyed her career. She was convicted, served her sentence, and disappeared after her release.””

“Was Celeste Mara?”” Brooks asked.

Evelyn nodded.

“She returned under a different name. I recognized her almost immediately.””

“Then why didn't you tell me who she was?””

“I tried.””

Adrian fell silent.

Evelyn continued.

“I showed you the old photograph. You said I was confused. I asked you to postpone the wedding. You told me I was embarrassing you in front of your future wife.””

Adrian's face crumpled.

“I didn't know.””

“You didn't want to know.””

The words struck harder than anger.

Brooks placed the photograph of Mara and Lena on the table.

“Who is Lena Ellison?””

Evelyn stared at the image.

“I don't know.””

“Walter says he drove you to meet a woman who looked like Celeste Arden.””

“Walter is correct. I met a woman who called herself Lena. She claimed Mara had been framed and that she had evidence proving who had arranged the fraud.””

“Why didn't you bring that evidence to the police?””

“Because she demanded money first. She said the records would disappear unless I paid her.””

“How much?””

“Five million dollars.””

Brooks raised her eyebrows.

“And did you pay?””

Evelyn looked away.

“I transferred the money.””

Adrian stared at her.

“You paid someone who might have been blackmailing you?””

“I paid because I was desperate to learn what had happened to Daniel's daughters. Two weeks later, the woman disappeared.””

Brooks wrote something in her notebook.

“Did you keep the transfer records?””

“In the safe.””

“The financial records we recovered?””

“Yes. Some payments went through offshore accounts. Others went through a private medical foundation. I discovered the connections only recently.””

Adrian looked sick.

“Celeste was using the foundation to pay Dr. Price.””

“I believe so.””

“Then why didn't you tell me the moment you found out?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I tried, Adrian.””

He lowered himself into the chair.

For the first time since arriving at the hospital, he looked directly at his mother.

“I'm sorry.””

She studied him for a long moment.

“Sorry is a beginning. It is not a repair.””

Detective Brooks closed her notebook.

“Mrs. Vale, we need to establish whether Mara acted alone, whether anyone helped her obtain the medication records, and whether the attempted suffocation was part of a larger plan.””

Evelyn nodded.

“There is one more thing you should know.””

She reached beneath her pillow and withdrew a small brass key.

“I found this in my husband's desk after his death. It opens a safety-deposit box at a bank in Richmond. I never had the courage to see what was inside.””

Brooks accepted the key.

“Why give it to us now?””

“Because if Mara returned to destroy me, then she wasn't only seeking revenge.””

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“She was searching for something her father hid before he died.””

Adrian frowned.

“What could Daniel Ellison have hidden?””

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“The original trust agreement. The one that proves the Vale fortune was never supposed to belong entirely to your father.””

The room went still.

Brooks slipped the key into an evidence envelope.

“Who was the rightful beneficiary?””

Evelyn looked toward the closed hospital door.

Then she whispered a name.

“Lena Ellison.””

Before anyone could respond, Detective Brooks's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds, her expression growing darker.

“What do you mean the prisoner has been identified?””

A pause.

“Run the fingerprints again.””

She ended the call and looked at Adrian.

“The woman we arrested as Celeste Arden has a confirmed identity under the name Mara Ellison.””

Adrian exhaled shakily.

“But there's a problem.””

Brooks glanced at Evelyn.

“The fingerprints match the old arrest record. The photograph matches. But the birth records show that Mara Ellison died fourteen years ago.””

Evelyn gripped the bedrail.

“No,” she whispered.

Brooks turned the phone toward her.

“Mrs. Vale, the woman in custody has been using the identity of someone who is legally dead.””

Evelyn's face drained of color.

Then she looked at Adrian with an expression of pure terror.

“That's not Mara,” she said.

“Mother?””

Evelyn seized his wrist.

“Adrian, listen to me. The woman you were going to marry isn't Mara Ellison.””

She swallowed hard.

May you like

“She's Lena.””

And somewhere across the city, a second woman with Celeste Arden's face was already walking into the Richmond bank, carrying a key that should never have existed.
