Chapter 8: The Ledger of Blood

At 1:43 p.m., Detective Brooks received the first confirmation that the woman calling herself Lena Ellison had lied about at least one crucial detail.

The death certificate for Mara Ellison was genuine.

The fingerprints belonging to the woman in custody, however, matched neither the archived record for Mara nor the available record for Lena.

They belonged to a third identity.

Brooks laid the results on the interview-room table.

“Your fingerprints don't match either Ellison sister,” she said.

“You claimed to be Lena. Your original arrest record identifies you as Mara. Neither is true.””

The woman stared at the report.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she laughed softly.

“You people believe a computer more than you believe your own eyes.””

“I believe evidence.””

“Then find the original ledger.””

Brooks folded her arms.

“Tell me what it contains.””

“Everything.””

“Everything about what?””

“The money your billionaire friends stole. The payments made to silence witnesses. The names of people who died because they knew too much.””

Adrian stood on the other side of the observation window, listening through the speaker. His hands were clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned pale.

Naomi stood beside him.

“She's trying to control the investigation,” he muttered.

“She's trying to survive it,” Naomi replied.

“There's a difference.””

He looked at her.

“Do you believe her?””

“I believe the evidence we found. I believe your mother is frightened of the second woman. And I believe someone has been manipulating your family for a very long time.””

Brooks returned to the interview room.

“Let's start with your real name.””

The prisoner looked directly at her.

“Celeste Arden.””

“That's the identity you stole.””

“It's the name I was given.””

“By whom?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she looked toward the observation window.

“Ask Adrian's father.””

Adrian entered the room before Brooks could stop him.

“My father has been dead for twelve years.””

“Exactly,” the woman replied.

“Convenient, isn't it?””

Adrian planted both hands on the table.

“Enough riddles. Tell me what happened.””

The woman studied his face.

“You really don't know.””

“Know what?””

“Your father didn't die in an accident.””

The room fell silent.

Brooks moved closer.

“What evidence do you have?””

“The ledger. The original trust agreement. And a letter written by Daniel Ellison three days before he disappeared.””

“Where are those documents now?””

“With the woman who accessed the bank.””

“Your sister?””

The prisoner shook her head.

“No.””

Adrian felt a chill settle over him.

“Then who?””

The woman looked at Naomi.

“The person your mother has spent twenty years protecting.””

Naomi's heart hammered.

“Who is that?””

The prisoner opened her mouth, but the interview-room door suddenly swung open.

An officer hurried inside.

“Detective Brooks, we have a situation.””

Brooks turned sharply.

“What happened?””

“The hospital reports that someone attempted to access Mrs. Vale's room using a forged visitor pass. Security stopped the person at the elevator, but they escaped through the parking garage.””

Adrian was already moving.

“I'm going to the hospital.””

Brooks caught his arm.

“Wait for my team.””

“Someone is trying to get to my mother!””

“And running blindly into a trap won't help her.””

Naomi grabbed her bag.

“I know the hospital's service entrance. I can get us to the security office without crossing the public lobby.””

Brooks nodded.

“Let's move.””

Twenty minutes later, they stood in the hospital security room, watching grainy footage on a wall-mounted monitor.

A woman in a dark green coat entered the building at 1:18 p.m. She wore a surgical mask and carried a bouquet of white lilies.

She approached the reception desk, presented a badge, and walked toward the elevators.

The image was blurry, but her eyes were unmistakable.

Adrian leaned toward the screen.

“That's her.””

“The woman from the bank?”” Brooks asked.

“No. The woman I arrested as Celeste Arden.””

Naomi shook her head.

“That can't be right. She's still in custody.””

Brooks replayed the footage.

The woman turned toward the camera.

For a fraction of a second, the mask slipped below her nose.

The face was identical.

Two women.

One face.

One in a police interview room. The other in a hospital corridor.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Identical twins.””

“Or someone deliberately imitating her,” Brooks replied.

“We won't assume until we establish identity.””

Naomi pointed at the monitor.

“Look at her left hand.””

The woman carried the lilies in her right hand. Her left hand was gloved, but a bright emerald ring flashed beneath the fabric.

Adrian removed his own engagement ring from his pocket. He had taken it off in the hospital parking lot and kept it there, unable to throw it away.

“The ring,” he whispered.

Brooks glanced at him.

“What about it?””

“Celeste wore an emerald-cut diamond. The woman in the footage is wearing the same ring.””

Naomi looked closer.

“No. The setting is different. The stone is smaller.””

Adrian frowned.

“She has another ring.””

The security officer enlarged the image.

A tiny engraving appeared inside the band, just visible when the woman adjusted her grip on the bouquet.

A broken circle crossed by a line.

The same symbol from the hidden folder.

Brooks immediately contacted hospital security.

“Lock down the floor. Search the parking garage and preserve every camera recording. Nobody enters Mrs. Vale's room without verification.””

They rushed toward the cardiac ward.

Two uniformed officers guarded Evelyn's door. Inside, the old woman was awake, speaking quietly with a nurse.

Adrian entered first.

“Mother, are you all right?””

Evelyn looked startled.

“What happened?””

“Someone tried to get into your room.””

Her expression collapsed.

“Then she has found the ledger.””

Naomi approached the bed.

“Who has, Mrs. Vale?””

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“The woman who came to me twenty years ago. The woman who claimed she was Lena Ellison.””

Brooks pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Who was she?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Her name was Celeste Arden. She was not an Ellison. She was Daniel's second daughter, born from an affair he had hidden from his family.””

Adrian stared at her.

“Then Mara and Lena weren't the only children?””

“No,” Evelyn whispered.

“There were three sisters.””

Naomi felt the room tilt around her.

The prisoner at the station had claimed to be Lena. The woman at the bank had used Lena's identity. And the woman who had tried to enter Evelyn's hospital room had the same face as the prisoner.

Three sisters.

Three identities.

One carefully constructed deception.

Brooks leaned forward.

“Where is the third sister now?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“I don't know. But if she's returned, it means the ledger is no longer safe.””

Adrian took his mother's hand.

“What does the ledger prove?””

Evelyn looked at him with tears gathering in her eyes.

“That your father wasn't the only Vale who helped destroy the Ellison family.””

She paused.

“Someone in this room helped him.””

Everyone turned.

The nurse stood frozen beside the medical cart.

Then Evelyn pointed at the woman.

“Her.””

May you like

The nurse's face went white.

She dropped the syringe in her hand and ran for the door.
