Chapter 6: The Man Who Came Back From the Past

The sound of the front door opening froze everyone.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For a moment, the only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat.

My father looked toward the hallway like he was seeing a ghost.

My mother grabbed my hand.

Not Amir’s.

Not Maya’s.

Mine.

And I understood something in that moment.

Adults always tried to protect children by hiding the truth.

But sometimes the truth was the thing standing right outside the door.

A shadow appeared in the hallway.

A man stepped inside.

He was older, maybe in his sixties.

His coat was wet from the rain outside.

His face looked tired.

But his eyes were sharp.

They moved across the room slowly.

First to Marcus.

Then to Maya.

Then to Amir.

Then to me.

The man stopped.

“Marcus.””

My father didn’t answer.

The stranger gave a small, sad smile.

“Still hiding things?””

My father stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

The man looked around the house.

“This is a beautiful place.””

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

“Funny how some people build beautiful things on top of ugly foundations.””

My mother’s grip tightened around my hand.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at her.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Didn’t he tell you?””

My father’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

The man ignored him.

“My name is Daniel.””

He looked at Maya.

“I was your mother’s attorney.””

Maya froze.

“You?””

Daniel nodded.

“I helped Lena before she died.””

My father’s expression changed.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.””

Daniel smiled.

“And you weren’t supposed to find out she protected the evidence.””

The room became silent.

Maya stepped forward.

“You know where the recording is?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with emotion.

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I was waiting.””

“For what?””

He looked at Marcus.

“For the right moment.””

My father laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You always loved being dramatic.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“And you always loved pretending you were innocent.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t respond.

That scared me.

Because my father always responded.

He always had an explanation.

But now he had nothing.

Maya moved closer to Daniel.

“My mother trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“She died believing you would protect us.””

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“I tried.””

“But you failed.””

The words hit him.

He accepted them.

“Yes.””

Amir looked confused.

“What happened to my mom?””

Daniel looked at him.

And his expression softened.

The same way my mother looked at him.

Like they were seeing a child who had suffered too much.

“Your mother found something she shouldn’t have found.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Your father’s business partner was stealing money.””

My father immediately interrupted.

“That’s not the whole story.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

Daniel continued.

“The whole story is that when Lena discovered it, she also found out Marcus knew.””

My mother slowly released my hand.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Vanessa—”

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You knew?””

My father looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Maya stared at him.

“You knew and you did nothing?””

“It wasn’t that simple.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“It was simple.””

My father looked at him.

“You don’t know what I was dealing with.””

Daniel’s voice became harder.

“You were dealing with greed.””

The word hung in the air.

My father looked away.

Maya crossed her arms.

“So my mother died because she found out?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Then he said:

“She died because she was trying to expose someone powerful.””

My mother whispered:

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

The rain hit the glass behind him.

Then he said:

“Someone inside your family.””

Nobody moved.

My mother’s face changed.

“Inside?””

Daniel nodded.

Marcus looked furious.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Is it?””

A long silence followed.

Then Maya said:

“You know who it is.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Not worried.

Afraid.

“I can’t say.””

My father stepped forward.

“Because you don’t know.””

“No.””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Because if I say it, the person will know I have the evidence.””

Maya’s eyes narrowed.

“You still have the recording.””

Daniel reached inside his coat.

Everyone tensed.

He pulled out a small black device.

A flash drive.

“This is a copy.””

My father went pale.

Maya stared.

“That’s it?””

Daniel nodded.

“The original is somewhere safer.””

My father looked at him.

“Give it to me.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Why?””

“Because this affects my family.””

Daniel looked around.

“No.””

He pointed gently.

“This affects the children.””

The room became quiet.

I looked at Amir.

He looked scared.

I realized something.

All these adults had been fighting over money and secrets.

But the people who suffered were always the kids.

Maya took the drive.

“Why now?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Because someone tried to silence me.””

Everyone froze.

“What?”” my mother asked.

Daniel pulled back his sleeve.

There was a small bandage around his wrist.

“Last night.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Are you okay?””

“I survived.””

My father stared at him.

“Who attacked you?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

And said:

“You know who.””

My father’s expression became angry.

“I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Because you helped create him.””

My father said nothing.

The words hit harder than anything else.

My mother looked between them.

“Marcus.””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought I could control it.””

Everyone stared.

“Control what?””

My father didn’t answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

My father looked at her.

Then at Amir.

Then at me.

And I saw regret.

Real regret.

“I made a deal.””

My mother whispered:

“With who?””

My father sat down slowly.

“With someone who promised to fix everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You didn’t make a deal.””

My father looked at him.

“You made a mistake.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The house went dark.

A second later, emergency lights came on.

My mother pulled me closer.

“Stay near me.””

Daniel looked toward the windows.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

Maya asked.

He didn’t answer.

He walked slowly toward the glass.

Outside, in the rain, a car was parked near the driveway.

The headlights were off.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

My father stepped beside him.

The moment he saw the car, he stopped breathing.

“You know that car?”” Maya asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

My mother looked at him.

“Marcus.””

Finally, he whispered:

“He found us.””

The person inside the car opened the door.

A figure stepped out.

Walking slowly toward the house.

Daniel grabbed the flash drive back from Maya.

“No.””

“What?”” she asked.

His voice was urgent.

“He can’t see this.””

My father looked terrified.

“Take the children upstairs.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone wanted to know who was coming.

The front door handle turned.

Slowly.

Then the door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He looked at Marcus.

Then at Maya.

Then at Amir.

His eyes finally stopped on me.

And he smiled.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you, Noah.””

My blood went cold.

Because I had never seen him before.

But he knew my name.

My father whispered:

“Don’t listen to him.””

The man smiled wider.

“Your father never told you, did he?””

He stepped closer.

“The reason your family has so many secrets…”

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“Is because you were the last one he had to protect.””
