Chapter 9: The Child Hidden From Everyone
Nobody spoke after my father said those words.
The fourth child.
The sentence felt impossible.
Two children had already appeared.
Amir.
Maya.
And now there was another.
Another person connected to my father.
Another life changed by decisions adults made before I was even born.
My mother slowly looked at Marcus.
“How many children are there?””
My father didn’t answer.
Her voice became louder.
“Marcus.””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
The room exploded.
“You don’t know?””
Maya stepped forward.
“How can you not know?””
Amir looked hurt.
Like every new secret was another reminder that his father had never truly known him.
My father looked at him.
“I thought I knew.””
Amir shook his head.
“You thought?””
The simple word destroyed him.
Daniel picked up the note from the floor.
“The fourth child.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Who is it?””
My father stared at the message.
“I thought Lena was the only person who knew.””
Maya’s expression changed.
“Who knew what?””
Marcus sat down.
Slowly.
Like his legs couldn’t carry him anymore.
“The fourth child wasn’t born from a relationship.””
Everyone went quiet.
“What does that mean?”” my mother asked.
My father looked at me.
And that was the moment I realized something.
Whatever he was about to say involved me.
“When I was building the company, there were people who wanted control.””
Daniel nodded.
“The investors.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
My mother frowned.
“Why does this involve a child?””
My father swallowed.
“Because one of those investors had a daughter.””
Nobody moved.
“She worked with us.””
My father’s voice became quieter.
“Her name was Claire.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Claire?””
Marcus nodded.
“You knew her?””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
Maya looked between them.
“Who was she?””
My father answered:
“The person who started everything.””
My mother crossed her arms.
“Explain.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Claire discovered the company documents.””
Daniel interrupted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She didn’t discover them.””
He looked at Marcus.
“She created them.””
My father shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“Then why did Lena have proof?””
Silence.
My father looked defeated.
“Because Claire wanted revenge.””
My mother stared.
“Revenge for what?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“For a child.””
My heart stopped.
A child.
Again.
My father looked at me.
And I knew.
The secrets always came back to children.
“She had a son.””
Maya whispered:
“The fourth child.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
My mother looked confused.
“But why hide him?””
My father looked away.
“Because Claire was afraid.””
“Of who?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Everyone.””
The room went silent.
Daniel continued.
“Claire believed Marcus would take her son away.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I never would have.””
Daniel stared.
“But you did.””
My father’s face changed.
“What?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Because the boy disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
My mother covered her mouth.
“You mean…”
Marcus nodded.
“I thought he was dead.””
Amir looked at him.
“And you just moved on?””
My father flinched.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Amir’s voice cracked.
“You always moved on.””
That hurt more than any accusation.
Because it came from a child who had waited his whole life for his father.
My father looked at Amir.
“I’m sorry.””
Amir looked away.
“I don’t need sorry.””
A tear moved down his face.
“I needed you.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my father.
For the first time, I didn’t see a powerful businessman.
I saw someone who had failed people.
Again and again.
Maya picked up the recording device.
“Maybe Lena knew where he was.””
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why she left the message.””
My mother looked at him.
“What message?””
Daniel pointed toward the device.
“The recording.””
Everyone became still.
The truth had been sitting in front of us.
Waiting.
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice I had heard only in memories.
Lena.
My hands went cold.
“Marcus…”
My father closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, then I’m gone.””
Maya covered her mouth.
“Mom.””
Lena’s voice continued.
“I wish things had been different.””
A pause.
“But I need the truth to reach the children.””
My mother looked at Amir.
Then Maya.
Then me.
“Marcus, you need to understand something.””
The recording crackled.
“You were never protecting the children.””
My father looked down.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Nobody moved.
“Claire’s son is alive.””
My father looked up sharply.
“No.””
The recording continued.
“He was taken because someone wanted him hidden.””
Daniel whispered:
“Taken.””
Lena continued.
“And the person who knows where he is…”
A pause.
My mother leaned closer.
Everyone waited.
Then Lena said:
“…is the person who raised Noah.””
My blood went cold.
Everyone turned toward Marcus.
My father stood suddenly.
“No.””
My mother stepped away from him.
“Marcus?””
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stared.
“Who raised Noah?””
Nobody answered.
Then my mother whispered:
“I did.””
Lena’s recording continued.
“Vanessa, if you are listening, I need you to understand.””
My mother froze.
“She was speaking to you.””
The room went silent.
“Your husband did not tell you everything about Noah’s childhood.””
My father looked terrified.
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He couldn’t look at me.
Lena’s voice continued.
“When Noah was born, Marcus made a decision.””
The recording stopped for a second.
Then:
“He chose one child to protect.””
A pause.
“And he sacrificed another.””
The device clicked.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother turned toward Marcus.
“What does that mean?””
My father looked broken.
“I was trying to save Noah.””
“And who did you sacrifice?””
His eyes moved toward me.
Then away.
“I didn’t know.””
Maya stepped closer.
“You didn’t know what?””
My father whispered:
“That Claire’s son was alive.””
Daniel stared.
“Where did you think he was?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“I thought Victor took him.””
Everyone froze.
“Victor?””
My father nodded.
“He was involved from the beginning.””
My mother looked around.
“Then why is Victor after the recording?””
Daniel answered.
“Because the recording proves what happened.””
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Victor didn’t just help hide the child.””
A pause.
“He took him.””
The room went silent.
My father suddenly grabbed his phone.
“What are you doing?””
“Calling Victor.””
Daniel stopped him.
“He won’t answer.””
Marcus looked angry.
“I need answers.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You need to face them.””
My father stared.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The screen showed an unknown number.
My mother whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
But Marcus did.
He put it on speaker.
A voice came through.
A young voice.
A boy’s voice.
“Dad?””
My father froze.
The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
Because the voice wasn’t Victor.
It was a child.
Marcus whispered:
“Who is this?””
The voice shook.
“I don’t know if you remember me.””
Everyone held their breath.
“My name is Ethan.””
My father’s face turned white.
“No…”
The boy continued.
“I found out who you are.””
A pause.
“And I found out who my brothers and sisters are.””
My eyes widened.
Brothers.
Sisters.
The voice became quieter.
“I need your help.””
Marcus couldn’t speak.
Then the boy said something that made everyone freeze.
“Because the man who raised me…”
A pause.
“He’s coming to kill my father.””
My mother whispered:
“Victor.””
The boy’s voice cracked.
“And he’s coming for Noah next.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then my father looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I saw him terrified for my life.
