Chapter 7: The Person Sophie Never Stopped Fearing
The message stayed on Daniel’s phone screen.
Three words.
*SHE FOUND ADRIAN.*
Nobody spoke.
Not because we didn’t have questions.
Because suddenly we had too many.
The storage unit that had felt like a place of answers only minutes earlier now felt like a trap.
Someone knew we were here.
Someone knew I had found Nia.
Someone knew Daniel was with me.
And the most terrifying part was the way the message was written.
Not:
Adrian found her.
Not:
They found the folder.
*She found Adrian.*
Whoever sent it wasn’t warning someone about me.
They were warning someone about a woman.
A woman who wasn’t supposed to be alive.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who sent that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes remained on the screen.
“I don’t know.””
That was not the answer I wanted.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to understand that I’m just as confused as you are.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then I remembered how many times I had heard those words before.
I don’t know.
I was protecting you.
I didn’t want you hurt.
Every secret in my life had come wrapped in good intentions.
And every one of them had still hurt.
Nia stepped closer.
“Adrian.””
I looked at her.
“We need to leave.””
The urgency in her voice made me listen.
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that message knows where we are.””
Daniel nodded.
“She’s right.””
I looked at him.
“You’re agreeing with her?””
“Yes.””
That bothered me more than if he had argued.
“Why?””
“Because Marcus doesn’t send warnings.””
The room became silent.
Daniel looked toward the door.
“He sends consequences.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Then we heard it.
Footsteps.
Outside.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Maya grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
I pulled her behind me.
Nia immediately moved beside us.
Not behind.
Beside.
Like she had spent her entire life learning how to stand in front of danger.
The handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Daniel whispered:
“Back door.””
I looked at him.
“There’s a back door?””
“This place has emergency exits.””
“You know this building?””
He hesitated.
“Adrian.””
I stared at him.
Of course he did.
Another secret.
Another piece of a puzzle I never knew existed.
But there was no time.
We moved.
Daniel pushed open a narrow metal door behind some old boxes.
The hallway beyond was dark and empty.
We hurried through.
Maya stayed close to me.
Nia followed.
Daniel stayed behind us.
I noticed.
“You’re making sure nobody follows.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because Sophie asked me to protect you.””
Those words should have comforted me.
Instead, they reminded me of everything I had lost.
We reached the parking area behind the building.
My SUV was still there.
But before we could reach it, headlights turned on.
A black sedan.
Blocking the exit.
My heart dropped.
Marcus.
Again.
The driver’s door opened.
But it wasn’t Marcus who stepped out.
It was a woman.
She looked around forty.
Elegant.
Calm.
Expensive coat.
Perfect hair.
She stared directly at me.
Then at Nia.
And her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Nia.””
The girl beside me froze.
Her face lost all color.
“No.””
The woman took a step forward.
“I know you’re scared.””
Nia moved backward.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know her?””
Nia didn’t answer.
The woman looked at me.
“My name is Elena.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because Daniel’s words came back.
Elena.
Sophie’s sister.
Nia’s mother.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
Maya looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I couldn’t take my eyes off the woman.
“You’re dead.””
Elena’s expression broke.
“I know.””
Nia stared at her.
“You’re my mother.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a wound finally speaking.
Elena looked at her daughter.
“I am.””
Nia laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
“Where were you?””
The question was simple.
But it carried seventeen years of pain.
Elena looked down.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Nia’s eyes filled.
“By leaving me?””
“I thought I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
The anger in her voice was impossible to ignore.
I understood it.
Because I felt the same anger.
Everyone had made choices for us.
Everyone had decided what we could handle.
What we deserved to know.
Elena looked at me.
“Sophie trusted you more than anyone.””
I almost laughed.
“Did she?””
The pain in my voice surprised even me.
“She hid an entire family from me.””
Elena looked down.
“She was trying to protect you.””
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
My voice echoed through the parking lot.
“I’m tired of everyone telling me they lied because they loved me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody had an answer.
Elena stepped closer.
“She didn’t lie because she didn’t trust you.””
“Then why?””
“Because she knew you would sacrifice yourself.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
If Sophie had told me everything, I would have fought.
I would have chased every person involved.
I would have destroyed myself trying to save her.
But that didn’t make it okay.
It just made it complicated.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Elena, you shouldn’t be here.””
She looked at him.
“You knew she found him?””
“I knew she would eventually.””
“Then you failed.””
The words hit him.
I noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Elena looked at me.
“Daniel wasn’t supposed to let you find the truth alone.””
I turned.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Elena continued.
“Sophie created a plan.””
“A plan?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“To expose everyone involved.””
I looked at the folder.
“The documents?””
“Part of it.””
“Then what’s missing?””
Elena looked at Nia’s notebook.
“The final piece.””
Nia held it tighter.
“Sophie never gave me anything else.””
Elena looked at her.
“She did.””
Nia frowned.
“What?””
Elena pointed at the notebook.
“Your mother’s final message.””
Nia froze.
“My mother?””
“No.””
Elena shook her head.
“Sophie.””
She stepped closer.
“She hid something inside that notebook.””
I immediately remembered.
The broken cover.
The worn pages.
The strange numbers.
I looked at Nia.
“Have you checked every page?””
“Yes.””
“Every page?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
That hesitation mattered.
Daniel took the notebook.
He examined the spine.
Then his expression changed.
“There.””
“What?””
He pressed against the leather binding.
A small hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Everyone stared.
Maya whispered:
“Mommy hid that?””
“Yes,” I said quietly.
My hands shook as I took it.
A lifetime of questions.
A lifetime of grief.
All hidden inside something so small.
Elena looked at me.
“Before you watch it, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Sophie recorded that message knowing she might not survive.””
My throat tightened.
Daniel looked away.
Nia closed her eyes.
Maya held my hand.
I inserted the memory card into the laptop from the storage unit.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
The date was two days before Sophie’s death.
My heart stopped.
Because there she was.
Alive.
Sitting in our house.
Wearing the blue sweater she loved.
The same smile I had spent two years missing.
She looked directly into the camera.
And then she spoke.
“Adrian, if you’re watching this, then I’m already gone.””
My vision blurred.
Maya whispered:
“Mommy…”
Sophie continued.
“I need you to listen carefully. There is something I never told you.””
She paused.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The person who betrayed us is not who you think.””
I leaned closer.
Then Sophie said the words that changed everything.
“The person responsible for my death…”
She looked down.
Like even saying the name hurt.
“…is someone who raised Maya beside me.””
The video froze for one second.
Then continued.
And Sophie whispered:
“Adrian, the danger is not coming for your family.””
A pause.
“It has been living inside it.””
The screen went black.
And at that exact moment…
my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice came through.
A voice I had heard once before.
A voice that made Elena’s face turn pale.
“Adrian.””
I froze.
Because I recognized it.
It was my own brother.
A man who had not spoken to me in three years.
A man Sophie had told me never to trust.
And the next words he said made the entire mystery change.
“You need to get Maya away from Elena.””
A pause.
“Because she’s not the person Sophie was trying to protect her from.””
I looked at Elena.
Then at Nia.
Then at the dark screen.
And I realized the truth was still buried deeper.
Much deeper.
Because Sophie’s final warning had not named one enemy.
It had warned me about a family secret.
May you like
And now someone from my own blood was telling me the person I had just met…
was not the real danger.
