Chapter 8: The Brother I Buried Before Sophie Did

My brother’s voice stayed in my head long after the call ended.

“You need to get Maya away from Elena.””

Not Marcus.

Not Daniel.

Not the person Sophie had spent years investigating.

Elena.

The woman who claimed to be Sophie’s sister.

The woman who had lost a daughter and found her again.

The woman standing twenty feet away from me with tears in her eyes.

I wanted to believe my brother.

Because believing him was easier.

Family was supposed to be simple.

Good people and bad people.

Trust and betrayal.

But my life had become a place where every answer created three more questions.

I looked at Elena.

She looked back at me.

And somehow, she already knew.

“You talked to him.””

I froze.

“How did you know?””

Her expression changed.

“Because he always comes when the truth starts coming out.””

My grip tightened around my phone.

“You know my brother?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Elena looked away.

“That’s complicated.””

I laughed.

A bitter, exhausted laugh.

“Everyone says that.””

Nia stepped between us.

“Who called you?””

I looked at her.

“My brother.””

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“You have a brother?””

“Yes.””

“And Sophie knew him?””

I nodded slowly.

“She knew everyone except me.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

Maya looked down.

Immediately, I regretted saying it.

This wasn’t her burden.

None of this should have been hers.

I crouched beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For letting grown-up problems become your problems.””

She shook her head.

“Mommy said you do that.””

“What?””

“Take everyone’s pain and make it yours.””

I looked away.

Because Sophie had always understood me.

Even when I didn’t understand myself.

Nia watched Maya carefully.

“She sounds like someone who loved you a lot.””

I nodded.

“She did.””

“Then maybe she was trying to save you, not control you.””

I looked at Nia.

“You sound like her.””

A small smile appeared.

“She taught me a lot.””

That sentence hurt.

Because I should have been the person who knew those lessons.

I should have known the secrets.

Not a stranger.

Not a teenager.

Not someone my wife had trusted before me.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From my brother.

*Come alone. 10 minutes. Old bridge. I’ll explain everything.*

I showed it to Daniel.

His face immediately changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know where he is?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

Again.

I stepped closer.

“I’m done with hesitation.””

He sighed.

“Your brother contacted me after Sophie died.””

My anger returned.

“You’re joking.””

“No.””

“Everyone talked after Sophie died except me.””

Daniel looked down.

“He was trying to find out who killed her.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he believed you were being watched.””

I looked at Elena.

Then Nia.

Then Daniel.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had decided I wasn’t strong enough for the truth.

“What is my brother’s name?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You know his name.””

“I want to hear you say it.””

A pause.

Then:

“Ethan.””

My chest tightened.

Ethan Carter.

My younger brother.

The last person I spoke to before we stopped being family.

Three years earlier, he accused my company of becoming everything we promised we would never become.

Greedy.

Cold.

Unfair.

We fought.

He walked away.

I let him.

Pride is a strange thing.

Sometimes it feels powerful.

Sometimes you realize it was just another word for losing people.

“I’m going.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“You can’t go alone.””

“The message said alone.””

“That’s exactly why you shouldn’t.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Your brother is right about one thing.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He’s trying to protect you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You believe him?””

“I know him.””

“How?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because Ethan was the first person Sophie told.””

The world shifted again.

“The first person she told what?””

“The truth.””

I felt my patience disappear.

“What truth?””

Elena looked at Nia.

Then at Maya.

Then at me.

“The truth about Maya’s mother.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Elena took a slow breath.

“Sophie discovered something about Maya’s birth.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Maya was watching us.

I lowered my voice.

“What are you saying?””

Elena looked at me with sadness.

“I’m saying there is a reason Sophie protected Maya more than anything.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Because some answers are too painful before they are even spoken.

Daniel stepped in.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“No. Maya is my daughter.””

Nobody said anything.

And that silence scared me.

Because if the answer was obvious, they would have said it.

Maya looked up.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

“Nothing changes.””

I walked toward her.

“Do you hear me? Nothing.””

I held her hands.

“You are my daughter.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then why does everyone keep talking like I’m a secret?””

That question destroyed me.

Because she was right.

She had become the center of a mystery she never asked to be part of.

I hugged her.

“You’re not a secret.””

But inside, I was terrified.

Because I didn’t know what Sophie had hidden.

And I didn’t know if I wanted to.

Ten minutes later, I stood beneath the old bridge where Ethan had asked me to meet.

I didn’t go alone.

Daniel stayed hidden nearby.

Elena and Nia waited in the SUV with Maya.

I knew it broke the rules.

But I had spent too long following everyone else’s rules.

The bridge was empty.

Cold wind moved through the concrete pillars.

Then a voice came from behind me.

“You got older.””

I turned.

Ethan stood there.

My little brother.

The person who once knew everything about me.

He looked different.

Tired.

Broken.

But still familiar.

“You could have called.””

“I did.””

“You called three years later?””

His face tightened.

“I called before.””

“What?””

“I called after Sophie died.””

I shook my head.

“No, you didn’t.””

“Yes.””

“I would have answered.””

Ethan looked at me.

“No, you wouldn’t have.””

The words hurt because they were probably true.

He stepped closer.

“I tried to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

“That Sophie wasn’t killed because of Marcus.””

I stared.

“Then who?””

Ethan looked past me.

At the city lights.

“At first, I thought it was someone outside the family.””

He swallowed.

“Then Sophie showed me the truth.””

“What truth?””

His eyes filled.

“The truth that she was hiding from you.””

I waited.

Finally, he said:

“Maya’s mother was never the target.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What?””

“Sophie was.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when you know why.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because Sophie found out Maya wasn’t just her daughter.””

I froze.

There it was again.

The sentence I was trying to avoid.

“Maya is my daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then stop talking like she isn’t.””

Ethan’s expression softened.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

Not old.

Not faded.

New.

“This was the last thing Sophie gave me.””

My breathing stopped.

“You had another letter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she told me not to give it to you until you found Nia.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone knew.””

Ethan looked away.

“Yes.””

“Everyone except me.””

“Yes.””

The anger came back.

“Why?””

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Because Sophie was afraid that if you knew the truth, you would destroy yourself trying to fix something that couldn’t be fixed.””

I took the envelope.

My hands shook.

Inside was one page.

Only one.

Sophie’s handwriting.

My eyes moved across the first line.

Adrian,

There is something about Maya that I need you to understand.

I stopped.

Then I read the next sentence.

And every sound around me disappeared.

Because Sophie had written the one thing I never expected.

Maya was not the secret.

Maya was the reason the secret existed.

The letter continued:

The person who knows the truth about Maya’s birth is the same person who caused Elena to disappear.

And beneath that sentence was a name.

A name I knew.

A name that had been standing beside me throughout this entire nightmare.

My hands went numb.

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is this?””

His face turned pale.

“You know.””

I looked down at the name again.

And finally understood why Sophie never told me.

Because the person she feared wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t Elena.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It was someone I had loved.

Someone I had defended.

Someone who had watched Maya grow up.

Someone who had smiled at me while hiding the truth.

The name written on the page was:

*Adrian Carter.*

My own name.

I stopped breathing.

Because underneath it, Sophie had written:

*The person who betrayed us was not someone else. It was the man who unknowingly built his life on a lie.*

I looked at Ethan.

“What does this mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

His voice came through, shaking.

“Adrian…”

“What?””

“There’s a problem.””

“What problem?””

A pause.

Then:

“Maya is gone.””

My blood turned cold.

“What?””

“We turned around for one second.””

My vision blurred.

“Where is she?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Adrian…”

“Where is my daughter?””

May you like

The next words were barely audible.

“She left with Elena.””
