Chapter 11: The Man at the Door

The doorbell rang again.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Tell me.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because if he’s here…”

She stopped.

Marcus finished the sentence.

“Everything changes.””

Brielle nodded.

Evelyn walked toward the door.

Marcus immediately followed.

“I’ll do it.””

She looked at him.

“No.””

“Evelyn.””

She gave him a small smile.

“I have been afraid of this door for twenty years.””

She placed her hand on the handle.

“I should be the one to open it.””

Marcus stepped beside her.

“Then I’m standing with you.””

She nodded.

Together, they opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A tired face.

But his eyes were familiar.

Brielle gasped from across the room.

The man looked past Marcus.

And saw Evelyn.

Neither of them spoke.

Twenty years disappeared in one second.

“Evelyn.””

Her lips trembled.

“Jonathan.””

Brielle grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

The man looked at her.

His expression broke.

“Brielle.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked between them.

The impossible was standing in front of him.

The father Brielle believed abandoned her.

Alive.

Standing there.

Looking at her like he had spent years waiting for this moment.

Jonathan stepped inside slowly.

“I didn’t know if I should come.””

Evelyn’s voice was quiet.

“Someone contacted you.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Jonathan looked at the table.

At the deed.

At the documents.

His expression changed.

“You found it.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You knew.””

Jonathan nodded.

“I always knew this day would come.””

Brielle stared.

“Why are you here?””

Jonathan looked at his daughter.

His eyes filled.

“Because I should have come sooner.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Twenty years sooner?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty caught her off guard.

Marcus watched.

There was no anger in Jonathan’s face.

Only regret.

Brielle stepped closer.

“Why did you leave?””

Jonathan looked at Evelyn.

Then back at her.

“I didn’t.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“I never left you.””

Brielle shook her head.

“Mom told me you walked away.””

Jonathan looked devastated.

“I was told you didn’t want to see me.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Evelyn?””

She whispered:

“I thought I was protecting her.””

Brielle stared at her mother.

“You told him I didn’t want him?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Jonathan answered.

“Of what my family would do.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Jonathan looked at the deed.

“My family had money.””

A pause.

“Power.””

Another pause.

“And secrets.””

Brielle looked confused.

“What secrets?””

Jonathan looked at Evelyn.

“You never told her?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I tried.””

Jonathan sighed.

“Brielle, this house…”

He looked around.

“This house was supposed to be yours.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked shocked.

Evelyn looked down.

Brielle stared.

“What?””

Jonathan continued.

“Before you were born, my family created a trust.””

“A trust?””

“For this property.””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“So the house was meant for Brielle?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.””

Brielle stepped back.

“Then why did Mom have the deed?””

Evelyn answered.

“Because I refused to let his family control our lives.””

Jonathan nodded.

“She protected you.””

Brielle looked between them.

“You both knew?””

“Yes,” Jonathan said.

Her voice broke.

“And nobody told me?””

The pain in that question silenced everyone.

Jonathan took a step forward.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His face fell.

“Because someone threatened to take you away.””

Marcus looked alarmed.

“Who?””

Jonathan’s eyes moved toward the envelope.

“The same person who has been trying to control this house for years.””

Brielle whispered:

“Who?””

Jonathan looked directly at her.

“Your uncle.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

Because she knew exactly who he meant.

And then Jonathan added:

“He was here tonight.””
