Chapter 8: The Signature She Borrowed

Marcus stared at the page.

His own name stared back at him.

The dining room felt smaller.

The walls seemed closer.

He looked at Brielle.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer.

“Brielle.””

Her eyes filled.

“I can explain.””

Marcus held up the document.

“That’s what people say when they know they’re in trouble.””

Daniel stepped back.

“I should leave.””

“No,” Marcus said.

Daniel stopped.

“You’re staying.””

The man nodded slowly.

Because he knew this was bigger than him.

Marcus looked down again.

The document was a consent form.

A financial authorization.

His name was attached.

His signature was at the bottom.

But something felt wrong.

“I never signed this.””

Brielle whispered:

“You did.””

Marcus looked at her.

“When?””

She looked away.

“Two years ago.””

Marcus frowned.

“Two years ago?””

“Yes.””

“You expect me to believe I forgot signing something this important?””

Brielle shook her head.

“You didn’t know what it was.””

Evelyn looked shocked.

“What did you tell him?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“What did you tell me?””

The silence was enough.

Evelyn slowly sat down.

“Brielle.””

Her daughter looked at her.

“You used his trust.””

Brielle’s eyes flashed.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Marcus stared.

“By lying to me?””

“I didn’t think it would matter.””

“That’s your answer for everything.””

The words hurt.

Brielle looked down.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“She thought if she had control of the paperwork, she would never have to feel powerless again.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You keep explaining her actions like that makes them okay.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m not.””

Evelyn looked at the document.

“What exactly did she change?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Tell me.””

She sat down.

For the first time, she looked completely defeated.

“When I found out Mom was keeping the deed…”

Evelyn interrupted.

“You knew?””

Brielle nodded.

“I knew she had the original.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why pretend?””

“Because I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“How?””

Brielle looked at the floor.

“I wanted the house transferred.””

Marcus went still.

“You wanted my name on it?””

Brielle nodded.

“Eventually.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe it.

“So this wasn’t about respect.””

Brielle looked at him.

“It was.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“This was about ownership.””

Her eyes filled.

“You don’t understand what it feels like to always need someone else.””

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Brielle.””

Her daughter looked at her.

“I was trying to give you security.””

“You were trying to take mine.””

The room went silent.

Those words hurt because they were true.

Brielle looked at the floor.

“I thought you would forgive me.””

Evelyn stared.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?””

Brielle hesitated.

That was the answer.

Evelyn looked away.

Marcus noticed.

He noticed everything now.

Every pause.

Every glance.

Every missing piece.

Daniel slowly spoke.

“There’s more.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel reached into the folder.

He pulled out another paper.

Brielle immediately stood.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“What is it?””

Brielle’s voice trembled.

“Please.””

Marcus looked shocked.

She had never begged before.

Not like this.

“What is it?””

Daniel answered.

“It’s a letter.””

“From who?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“From her.””

Evelyn frowned.

“From me?””

Daniel nodded.

“She wrote it years ago.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“Why would you have a letter from your mother?””

Brielle’s face changed.

Because there was something she didn’t want him to know.

Daniel handed the letter to Marcus.

“Because she read it before anyone else did.””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

“You opened your mother’s private letter?””

Brielle whispered:

“I was scared.””

Marcus slowly unfolded the paper.

The first line made Evelyn stand up.

Because she recognized the words.

“I need to tell my daughter the truth before it’s too late…”

Evelyn’s hand went to her mouth.

Brielle looked terrified.

May you like

Because that letter wasn’t about the house.

It was about the one thing Evelyn had never told her daughter.
