Chapter 5: The Stranger With the Evidence

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

I KNOW WHAT ETHAN DID.

Five simple words.

Five words that somehow carried more weight than all the documents Attorney Brooks had brought to the estate that morning.

Because paperwork could prove what someone owned.

But secrets?

Secrets proved who someone really was.

I sat inside the SUV with the door closed, watching Ethan’s mansion through the tinted glass.

The same house where I had once chosen paint colors.

The same kitchen where I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for people who barely appreciated it.

The same bedroom where I had slept beside a man who was already building a second life behind my back.

My thumb hovered over the unknown number.

For a moment, I wondered if it was a trap.

Ethan had enemies.

I knew that.

Successful people always collected them.

But Ethan had a particular talent for making people feel like they owed him something.

I typed one word.

Who?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who should have warned you sooner.

My stomach tightened.

I looked at the message again.

Not someone who didn’t know.

Someone who should have warned me.

That meant whoever this was had been close enough to see what was happening.

Close enough to know.

I called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman answered.

“Claire Sterling?””

Her voice was soft.

Careful.

“Yes. Who is this?””

A pause.

“My name is Vanessa Cole.””

The name meant nothing at first.

Then everything.

Vanessa Cole.

Ethan’s former financial assistant.

She had worked for his company three years ago.

I remembered her.

Quiet woman.

Always carrying a tablet.

Always watching more than she spoke.

Ethan had fired her suddenly.

He told me she made mistakes.

He told me she was careless.

But Vanessa had looked terrified the last time I saw her.

“What do you want?”” I asked.

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

Everybody wanted truth when they weren’t the ones being destroyed by it.

“Why now?””

“Because I saw what happened this morning.””

I looked toward the mansion.

“You were there?””

“No. I saw the news.””

That surprised me.

“News?””

“Someone recorded the scene outside your house. It’s already spreading online.””

Of course it was.

A wealthy family’s downfall was entertainment to strangers.

But Vanessa didn’t sound interested in gossip.

She sounded afraid.

“Claire,” she said quietly, “Ethan didn’t just cheat on you.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“I know about Chloe.””

“No.””

The certainty in her voice stopped me.

“You don’t understand.””

I sat up straighter.

“What don’t I understand?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Chloe wasn’t the beginning.””

The words landed slowly.

Like a door opening somewhere in a dark hallway.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Ethan has been planning his exit for a long time.””

I looked down.

For months, I had believed Chloe was the betrayal.

The affair.

The replacement.

The humiliation.

But maybe Chloe was only the part Ethan wanted me to see.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“He was moving money before he ever met Chloe.””

The air left my lungs.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I helped him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I didn’t know what he was doing at first.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“I thought I was preparing normal business transfers. He told me it was restructuring.””

I closed my eyes.

Ethan always used clean words for dirty actions.

Restructuring.

Planning.

Protecting.

Managing.

Words that sounded professional enough to hide betrayal.

“But then I found files,” Vanessa continued.

“Private agreements. Accounts that weren’t connected to the company.””

“And?””

“And your name was on some of them.””

My heart stopped.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

The rain tapped against the SUV window.

“What kind of accounts?””

“I don’t know everything. But I know Ethan created documents that made it look like you approved things you never saw.””

My first instinct was anger.

Then confusion.

Then something colder.

Fear.

Because this was no longer about divorce.

This was about being erased.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The silence on the other end answered before she did.

“Because I was scared.””

I looked back at the mansion.

For the first time, I didn’t see a home.

I saw a crime scene made of marble and glass.

“What happened after you found out?””

“He threatened me.””

My breath caught.

“Threatened you how?””

“He told me nobody would believe me. He said people like him always survive.””

My jaw tightened.

That sounded exactly like Ethan.

Not because he was fearless.

Because he had always depended on people being too intimidated to challenge him.

“Do you have proof?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“What kind?””

“Copies of the files.””

I leaned back.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan knows I have them.””

The line went silent.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He’s looking for me.””

A chill moved through me.

“Vanessa—”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then immediately called Brooks.

He answered after one ring.

“Claire?””

“We need to find someone.””

His tone changed.

“Who?””

“Vanessa Cole.””

A pause.

“Ethan’s former assistant?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knows what he did.””

Brooks didn’t ask for more.

That was why I trusted him.

“Send me the number.””

I did.

Seconds later, another message appeared.

From Brooks.

I’m checking.

I looked back toward the mansion.

Ethan stood on the porch.

Watching.

Even from a distance, I could feel it.

He knew something had changed.

Maybe he didn’t know what.

But he knew.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began, Ethan Vance looked less like a man in control.

He looked like a man running out of places to hide.
