Chapter 6: The Lie He Built
By sunset, Ethan had stopped pretending.
That was how I knew he was scared.
The charming husband disappeared.
The polished businessman disappeared.
The man standing outside the mansion was the one only I knew.
The angry one.
The desperate one.
The one who hated losing control more than he loved anything else.
My phone rang.
Ethan.
I stared at his name.
Once, seeing that name would have made my heart jump.
Now it only reminded me of everything I had ignored.
I answered.
“What?””
His voice came immediately.
“Where are you?””
Not hello.
Not how are you.
Where are you?
Like I was still something he had a right to track.
“That’s none of your business.””
“Claire, stop this.””
I laughed quietly.
“Stop what?””
“This game.””
I looked out at the city lights from my hotel room window.
“A game?””
“Yes.””
His voice lowered.
“You think you’re winning because you embarrassed me.””
There it was.
His biggest misunderstanding.
He thought this was about embarrassment.
He thought I wanted revenge because he hurt my pride.
He still didn’t understand.
“I don’t care about embarrassing you, Ethan.””
“Then what do you care about?””
“The truth.””
Silence.
A long one.
Enough to tell me I had hit something real.
Then he said:
“You don’t know what you’re asking for.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Is that supposed to scare me?””
“No.””
But his voice said yes.
“I’m trying to protect you.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“You’re protecting me?””
“Yes.””
The lie was so bold I almost respected it.
Almost.
“Ethan, you brought another woman into our home.””
“She wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
There it was.
Not denial.
Not regret.
A mistake.
As if Chloe was a scheduling problem.
A business decision gone wrong.
“You really believe that makes it better?””
“No.””
He exhaled.
“I made mistakes.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that was his favorite phrase.
Mistakes.
Not choices.
Not decisions.
Mistakes.
Mistakes were accidents.
Mistakes didn’t have victims.
Mistakes didn’t leave women standing outside homes in the rain.
“What did you do with the money?”” I asked.
Silence.
A different kind.
A guilty one.
“Who told you?””
I felt my heartbeat slow.
There it was.
Confirmation.
“Thank you,” I said.
“What?””
“For answering the question.””
He cursed quietly.
“Claire.””
“No. I want to know something.””
“What?””
“When you were moving money around, did you ever think about me?””
His silence hurt more than an insult.
Because the answer was obvious.
“No,” I whispered.
“I did think about you.””
“Only after you got caught.””
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
“Act like you’re innocent.””
That stunned me.
For a second, I said nothing.
Then I understood.
This was how Ethan survived.
He dragged everyone into the same darkness so nobody could see his actions clearly.
“You’re unbelievable.””
“You think you’re perfect?””
“No.””
My voice became quieter.
“I think I was married to someone who never respected me.””
The line went silent.
Then Ethan said something I never expected.
“Claire, if you release those documents, you destroy more than me.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
“You know exactly what it means.””
“No, Ethan. Explain.””
But he wouldn’t.
Because he had already said too much.
The call ended.
I stood there holding my phone.
Thinking.
He wasn’t worried about losing money.
He was worried about something bigger.
Something connected to those documents.
Something even Vanessa hadn’t told me.
A knock came at my hotel door.
I froze.
I hadn’t told anyone where I was.
Slowly, I walked closer.
“Who is it?””
A voice answered.
“Claire?””
My heart stopped.
Vanessa.
I opened the door immediately.
She stood there looking exhausted.
No designer clothes.
No polished office appearance.
Just a woman who had been running.
In her hand was a small black folder.
“I need you to see this.””
I stepped aside.
She entered quickly and locked the door behind her.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I found the final account.””
“What account?””
She placed the folder on the table.
“The one Ethan never wanted anyone to know existed.””
I opened it.
Inside were copies of documents.
Transfers.
Signatures.
Dates.
Then I saw the name.
Not Ethan.
Not Chloe.
Someone else.
My blood went cold.
Because the person connected to Ethan’s secret wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I had trusted.
May you like
Someone who had stood beside us from the beginning.
Someone who had smiled at me while helping him destroy my life.
