Chapter 2: The Page He Never Read
Adrian had always been good at controlling a room.
That was his talent.
At business meetings, people listened when he spoke.
At charity events, cameras followed him.
At family dinners, everyone waited for his approval before changing the subject.
But that night, standing inside our study with a folder shaking in his hands, Adrian Cole looked like a man who had lost control of something he thought belonged to him.
I stood outside the doorway.
I could have walked away.
Part of me wanted to.
But another part of me needed to see the moment he finally understood.
Vanessa moved beside him.
“What is it?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
His eyes were locked on the document.
The arrogance had disappeared from his face.
The confidence.
The certainty.
Gone.
“Adrian?”” Vanessa repeated.
He turned the page slowly.
“What did you say to her before she left?””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
“What did you say?””
She looked annoyed.
“I told her she had nothing.””
A strange silence filled the room.
Then Adrian looked at her.
“You shouldn’t have said that.””
Vanessa blinked.
“Why?””
Because he knew.
He knew something I had known from the beginning.
The truth was never hidden.
It was simply ignored.
I stepped back into the room.
Both of them looked at me.
Adrian’s hand tightened around the document.
“What did you do?””
I almost smiled.
That was the question he chose.
Not “Why did you leave?””
Not “How did you survive this?””
Not “How long have you known?””
Just:
What did you do?
As if I was the threat.
As if protecting myself was an attack against him.
“I didn’t do anything,” I said.
Vanessa scoffed.
“Don’t play innocent.””
I looked at her.
“You should be careful accusing people when you don’t know the whole story.””
She stepped forward.
“Please. You think one piece of paper changes everything?””
“No,” I replied.
“One piece of paper doesn’t change everything.””
I looked at Adrian.
“It reveals everything.””
His face hardened.
“You’re enjoying this.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
Not because they were true.
Because they showed me how little he understood me.
“No, Adrian.””
My voice became quieter.
“I’m surviving it.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The fireplace crackled behind us.
The clock on the wall continued ticking.
A normal sound in a completely broken moment.
Adrian placed the folder down.
“You have been planning this.””
I shook my head.
“You planned this.””
He stared at me.
“I planned a divorce?””
“No.””
I pointed at the folder.
“You planned a way to make me disappear.””
His eyes narrowed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?””
I walked toward the desk.
“Twenty years together. Twenty years building a home. Twenty years supporting you when everyone else thought you would fail.””
I touched the folder.
“And your first instinct was to remove my name.””
Vanessa looked between us.
“Adrian told me everything.””
I turned to her.
“I’m sure he did.””
Her confidence returned.
“He told me you were emotional. That you wouldn’t understand.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was predictable.
“Of course he did.””
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
For years, I had wondered what story he told people about me.
Now I knew.
I was the difficult wife.
The emotional wife.
The woman who didn’t understand.
It was easier for him to make me small.
Because admitting my strength meant admitting what he had done.
Vanessa reached for the folder.
“Let me see.””
Adrian pulled it away.
“No.””
She froze.
“No?””
His eyes stayed on the page.
“You don’t need to see this.””
That was the first time I saw fear between them.
Not love.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Adrian, what are you hiding?””
He ignored her.
He looked at me.
“When did you find out?””
I didn’t answer.
“When, Nia?””
I looked at the man who had shared my bed, my dreams, my secrets.
Then I looked at the folder that was supposed to destroy me.
“Long enough ago to know exactly who you are.””
His breathing changed.
“You’ve been pretending?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’ve been waiting.””
The words made Vanessa step back.
“Waiting for what?””
I looked at Adrian.
“For you to show me whether you were going to tell the truth.””
“And?””
I stared at him.
“You didn’t.””
The silence that followed was louder than any argument we had ever had.
Then Adrian suddenly grabbed the folder again.
His fingers moved through the papers faster.
He flipped past the divorce agreement.
Past the financial pages.
Past the property documents.
Until he reached the final page.
His face drained of color.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“What is it?””
Adrian didn’t respond.
He just stared.
I watched his eyes move across the page.
And I knew the exact moment he realized his mistake.
The moment he understood the house was never his to take.
Because his voice came out barely above a whisper.
“No…”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Adrian, tell me what it says.””
He looked at me.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Terrified.
May you like
Then he said the one thing I had been waiting years to hear.
“Nia… you knew about this before I did.””
