Chapter 3: The Woman He Underestimated
I used to think the hardest moment of my marriage would be watching Adrian walk away.
I imagined tears.
Arguments.
Begging.
A broken heart.
I never imagined the hardest moment would be standing in front of him and realizing I no longer wanted him to stay.
The study felt different now.
Same walls.
Same furniture.
Same expensive decorations Adrian loved showing guests.
But the power had shifted.
He felt it.
Vanessa felt it.
And that was the one thing neither of them could accept.
They had prepared for my sadness.
They had not prepared for my calm.
Adrian placed the document on the desk.
“Explain this.””
His voice was low.
Demanding.
The old Adrian.
The man who believed every question was a command.
I didn’t move.
“Read it again.””
“I asked you to explain.””
“And I asked you to read.””
His eyes hardened.
For a second, I saw the man I married.
The charming man.
The ambitious man.
The man who used to bring me coffee every morning and kiss my forehead before leaving for work.
Then I saw the man standing in front of me now.
The man who brought another woman into my home.
The memory disappeared.
Adrian picked up the paper again.
Vanessa watched him carefully.
“Adrian, what does it say?””
He ignored her.
I noticed something then.
Vanessa wasn’t confident anymore.
She wasn’t smiling.
Because she was realizing something important.
She didn’t know everything either.
She thought she was replacing me.
But she was only another person Adrian had lied to.
“I trusted you,” Adrian said.
I almost laughed.
“You trusted me?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s the problem, Adrian. You trusted me to stay quiet.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
He looked away.
Because they were true.
For years, I had protected his image.
I defended him when people questioned his choices.
I stood beside him when his company nearly collapsed.
I sold jewelry that belonged to my grandmother so he could cover payroll.
I never told anyone.
Not even him.
Because I believed marriage meant protecting each other.
Apparently, he believed marriage meant protecting himself.
Vanessa walked toward me.
“You’re acting like some victim, but you clearly knew this was coming.””
I looked at her.
“Did Adrian tell you everything about our marriage?””
She hesitated.
Just for a second.
That was enough.
“No,” she said.
“He told me enough.””
“Enough to hate me?””
Her silence answered.
I nodded.
“That’s what he does.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Stop.””
I turned toward him.
“Stop what?””
“Making me the villain.””
The sentence surprised me.
Not because he said it.
Because he believed it.
I stepped closer.
“I didn’t make you anything.””
My voice lowered.
“You did that yourself.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian grabbed his phone from his pocket.
He made a call.
“Get me the original paperwork.””
I watched him.
The urgency in his voice was new.
“Now.””
He ended the call.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Who are you calling?””
“My attorney.””
She stared.
“Why?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That bothered her.
“You said everything was handled.””
He looked at her.
“It was supposed to be.””
There it was.
The truth slipping out.
Supposed to be.
Not was.
Not is.
Supposed to be.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You told me you owned this house.””
Adrian looked away.
“I believed I did.””
The room became silent.
I walked toward the fireplace.
“You know what’s funny?””
Neither of them answered.
“I spent years wondering why you changed.””
Adrian looked at me.
“You changed first.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked back at him.
“You just stopped hiding.””
His phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“Yes?””
His attorney’s voice was too quiet for us to hear.
But Adrian’s face told us enough.
His expression went from confusion.
To disbelief.
To fear.
“What do you mean it’s valid?””
Vanessa moved closer.
“What’s valid?””
Adrian held up a hand.
“Wait.””
A few seconds passed.
Then he whispered:
“No. That’s impossible.””
My heart beat faster.
Not from fear.
From finally seeing justice arrive.
Adrian ended the call.
He looked at me.
“How long?””
I stayed silent.
“How long has this been in place?””
I didn’t answer.
Vanessa looked between us.
“Nia?””
I turned toward the door.
“I think you both should ask the right questions.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
I reached for the handle.
“It means you spent so much time trying to remove me…”
I looked back at him.
“…you never asked who had the power to stop you.””
I opened the door.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered something.
A name.
A name that made Adrian freeze.
May you like
And before I could leave, Adrian said:
“Wait. That name… how do you know that name?””
