The Husband’s Name / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Man at the Door

The man stood in the open church doors, breathing hard as sunlight poured around his shoulders.

Tiana looked at him like she had seen a ghost.

Malik didn't move.

Evelyn's hand went to her mouth.

The stranger took one step inside.

“Everybody needs to stop.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Malik's eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

The man looked directly at Tiana.

“You know exactly who I am.””

Tiana shook her head.

“No.””

He gave a small, bitter smile.

“Still lying?””

Malik glanced down at the marriage certificate.

The visible letters suddenly made sense.

The name under his thumb began with *D*.

He looked back at the man.

“Are you the husband?””

The man didn't answer.

Tiana did.

“Malik, don't.””

Malik stepped toward her.

“Is he?””

The stranger finally looked at him.

“My name is Darius Coleman.””

The room exploded into whispers.

Tiana closed her eyes.

Malik's jaw tightened.

“Darius.””

Darius nodded.

“I was hoping I wouldn't have to come here.””

Tiana's voice cracked.

“You promised.””

“I promised I wouldn't expose you unless you went through with this.””

Malik turned sharply.

“Expose her for what?””

Darius looked at him.

“Ask your mother.””

Every head in the room turned toward Evelyn.

Evelyn stood perfectly still.

Malik stared at her.

“Mom?””

Darius walked farther into the church.

“You already have the certificate. You already have the photograph. Now you deserve the rest.””

Tiana rushed between them.

“No.””

Malik caught her wrist.

“Don't run.””

“I wasn't running.””

“You were.””

Her eyes met his.

“Please, Malik.””

His voice became quiet.

“Was Darius your husband?””

Tiana swallowed.

“Yes.””

Someone in the back whispered, “Lord…”

Malik released her wrist.

The paper shook in his hand.

“How long?””

“Three months,” Tiana whispered.

“And you were still married when you met me?””

“No.””

“Then when?””

“I met you after.””

“After what?””

“After I thought it was over.””

Darius laughed bitterly.

“You didn't think. You knew.””

Tiana spun toward him.

“You said you signed everything!””

“I signed my part.””

“You told me the divorce was done.””

“I told you I filed.””

Tiana stared at him.

“That's not what you said.””

“I know.””

Malik looked at Darius.

“Did you two get divorced?””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

Malik looked at Tiana.

She lowered her eyes.

The answer landed harder than any shout.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Son, I need you to hear me.””

Malik turned.

“Did you know?””

“I suspected.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“I knew Darius.””

Darius looked at her.

“You knew more than that.””

Malik's face hardened.

“Mom, what does he mean?””

Evelyn opened her clutch again.

This time she pulled out an envelope.

Tiana immediately stepped toward her.

“Don't open that.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because that belongs to me.””

“No,” Darius said.

“It belongs to the truth.””

Malik took the envelope.

It was sealed.

His name was written across the front.

*MALIK.*

His fingers went cold.

“Who wrote this?””

Darius answered.

“I did.””

Tiana shook her head.

“Don't read it.””

Malik stared at her.

“You've said that three times today.””

“Because I'm trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Tiana couldn't answer.

Malik tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the first line.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

Evelyn whispered, “What does it say?””

Malik looked up slowly.

“It says Darius knew me before I met Tiana.””

Darius nodded.

“And that's not even the worst part.””

Malik's grip tightened around the letter.

“What do you mean?””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

Then at Tiana.

May you like

Then back at Malik.

“I wasn't the only man Tiana was hiding from you.””
