Chapter 9: The Final Confession
Malik held the document between his fingers.
Tiana stood several feet away, her wedding dress stained at the hem from the chaos that had consumed the ceremony.
The old man remained motionless.
The officer watched him.
Samuel watched Evelyn.
Darius watched his father.
And Malik watched Tiana.
“You know what's written here?””
Tiana nodded.
“I've seen it.””
“When?””
“Three months ago.””
Malik's expression hardened.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because that's when everything started.””
“What started?””
“The truth.””
Malik unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was old and uneven.
At the top was a date.
Twenty-five years earlier.
Then one sentence:
*I DIDN'T DISAPPEAR. I WAS FORCED TO RUN.*
Malik stopped breathing.
He continued reading.
His father's words described the hidden accounts.
The stolen money.
The threats.
The men who followed him.
Then Malik reached a line that made his hands shake.
*Evelyn knows where the money went.*
He looked at his mother.
She shook her head.
“I didn't.””
The officer took the document.
“Let me see.””
Malik didn't release it.
“What does that mean?””
Samuel answered.
“Your father believed someone had hidden the money in Evelyn's name.””
“But she didn't know.””
“No.””
“Then why write that?””
“Because he thought she was the only person he could trust.””
Evelyn began crying.
“He came to me that night.””
Malik looked at her.
“What did he say?””
“He told me to take you and leave.””
“Why?””
“He said someone was coming.””
“Who?””
She looked at Tiana's grandfather.
“Him.””
The old man lowered his eyes.
Malik stared.
“You threatened my father?””
The old man finally spoke.
“Yes.””
Tiana shook her head.
“Granddad…”
“I thought I was protecting the family.””
“You destroyed it.””
“I know.””
Malik looked at him.
“What happened to my father?””
The old man sighed.
“I ordered him to give me the records.””
“And he refused?””
“Yes.””
“So you attacked him?””
“I sent men to scare him.””
“Scare him?””
“They went too far.””
Samuel stepped forward.
“They nearly killed him.””
Malik looked at Samuel.
“And you helped him escape.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because I was afraid the men would come for my family.””
Darius laughed bitterly.
“So you abandoned us too.””
Samuel lowered his head.
“Yes.””
Malik looked at the confession again.
“Where is my father now?””
Silence.
Evelyn's face crumpled.
Malik turned toward her.
“Mom.””
She whispered, “He's gone.””
“Gone where?””
“I don't know.””
The old man spoke.
“He died.””
Malik froze.
“When?””
“Years later.””
“How?””
“Cancer.””
Malik's eyes filled.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He contacted me once.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
“You spoke to him?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“He asked me not to.””
Malik's voice broke.
“Why?””
“Because he didn't want you carrying his mistakes.””
Malik looked away.
For the first time that morning, his anger disappeared.
Only grief remained.
Darius stepped closer.
“What about the money?””
The officer opened the old bank statements.
“There are account numbers here.””
Samuel nodded.
“The money was never stolen.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
“It was moved.””
“To where?””
Samuel pointed at Tiana.
“Her father's foundation.””
Tiana's eyes widened.
“What?””
Samuel nodded.
“He used charitable accounts to hide it.””
The officer scanned the papers.
“This is enough to reopen the investigation.””
Tiana shook her head.
“No.””
Malik looked at her.
“What?””
She reached inside her gown and pulled out a tiny flash drive.
“I have the rest.””
Malik stared.
“You had that all along?””
“I was going to give it to you after the wedding.””
“There was never going to be an after.””
Tiana's tears fell.
“I know.””
She held out the drive.
“This proves your father didn't steal everything.””
Malik didn't take it.
“What does it prove?””
“That someone else took the money after he disappeared.””
“Who?””
Tiana looked toward her grandfather.
He closed his eyes.
“Me.””
The room went silent.
Tiana stared at him.
“You?””
“I moved it.””
“Why?””
“To protect the family.””
“You ruined Dad.””
“I know.””
“You ruined Malik's family.””
“I know.””
“You made me marry Darius.””
The old man's eyes filled.
“I never told you to marry him.””
Tiana shook her head.
“You told me to get close to the Brooks family.””
Darius stared.
“You married me because he told you to?””
“I thought I could find the records.””
Malik looked at Tiana.
“And when you found them?””
“I found the truth.””
“Then why didn't you leave?””
“Because I fell in love with you.””
Malik's eyes closed.
She continued.
“That wasn't part of the plan.””
Nobody spoke.
Tiana stepped closer.
“I was supposed to use you.””
Malik opened his eyes.
“But I couldn't.””
Evelyn quietly said, “That's why she wanted me gone.””
Malik looked at her.
Tiana nodded.
“I knew if you stayed, you'd find the certificate.””
“You put it in your car.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted Mom to find it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Tiana wiped her tears.
“Because I knew she'd stop the wedding.””
Malik stared at her.
“You could have told me.””
“I was terrified.””
“Of what?””
Tiana looked toward her grandfather.
“Of what he'd do if I exposed him.””
The old man lowered his head.
Malik finally took the flash drive.
Then he looked at Darius.
“And you?””
Darius sighed.
“I knew Tiana was using me.””
Malik frowned.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why stay married?””
“Because I loved her once.””
Tiana looked at him.
“And because I wanted to help her get out.””
Malik looked at Evelyn.
“And you?””
She stepped forward.
“I knew your father was alive for six years.””
Malik nodded slowly.
The truth had finally stopped arriving in pieces.
It was all there.
Messy.
Ugly.
Human.
He looked at the altar.
At the flowers.
At the woman he had planned to marry.
Then he removed his wedding ring.
Tiana's face collapsed.
“Malik…”
He placed the ring in her trembling palm.
“I don't know if I can forgive you.””
“I understand.””
“I don't know if I can forgive my mother.””
Evelyn nodded through tears.
“I understand.””
“And I don't know what happens to any of us after today.””
The officer stepped forward.
“That's going to depend on what we find in those records.””
Malik looked at the flash drive.
Then at Tiana.
He thought the worst secret had finally been exposed.
Then Evelyn suddenly looked toward the altar.
Her eyes widened.
“Malik.””
He turned.
“What?””
She pointed toward the floor beneath the altar.
“There’s another compartment.””
The officer crouched.
She pressed against the wood.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a single envelope.
No name.
No date.
Only three words written across the front:
*FOR MALIK ONLY.*
Malik reached inside.
He opened it.
His father's handwriting appeared immediately.
May you like
And the first sentence read:
*Son, if you are reading this, then the woman standing beside you has finally told you enough to make you dangerous.*
