Chapter 5: The Man Daniel Trusted

The first thing I felt was disbelief.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Disbelief.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Robert Hale.

The man who stood in the church after my husband’s funeral.

The man who held Daniel’s final message.

The man who told me he was trying to protect me.

The man Daniel trusted.

Was standing behind my daughter.

My little girl.

The person who mattered more than anything in this world.

“No,” I whispered.

The word barely left my mouth.

Victor looked at me carefully.

“Elena.””

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“That’s not possible.””

My mother reached for my arm.

“Sweetheart—”

“Don’t.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t tell me to calm down. Don’t tell me there’s an explanation.””

My voice cracked.

“My daughter is in a car with the man who gave me my husband’s letter.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no comforting lie big enough.

Victor looked at the message again.

“He wants the file.””

I looked at him.

“Then we give it to him.””

My mother immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“No?””

Her face was full of fear.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””

I pointed at my phone.

“I’m dealing with someone who has my daughter.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Think carefully.””

I stared at him.

“Think carefully?””

My voice became sharper.

“My seven-year-old daughter is terrified somewhere, and you want me to think?””

His expression softened.

“I want you to bring her back alive.””

The words stopped me.

Because he wasn’t wrong.

Anger wasn’t a plan.

Panic wasn’t a plan.

I needed Maya.

I needed her safe.

I looked at the picture again.

She was sitting in the backseat.

Her favorite pink sweater was visible.

The one Daniel bought her last winter.

She had worn it when she hugged his casket.

My chest tightened.

“Maya.””

I whispered her name.

Then I noticed something.

The photo.

The background.

Behind Robert’s shoulder was a wall.

Old bricks.

A faded blue sign.

I zoomed in.

Victor noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Finding where they are.””

I studied the image.

The sign was blurry.

But I could make out three letters.

“R…V…”

My mother suddenly inhaled.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“You know this place?””

She stared at the screen.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Tell me.””

Her voice dropped.

“River Valley Warehouse.””

Victor became completely still.

“You’re sure?””

My mother nodded slowly.

“Your father used to keep records there.””

My heart pounded.

The place where my father hid evidence.

The place Daniel had been searching for.

The place Robert took Maya.

“They want the file,” I whispered.

Victor nodded.

“And they know where to find it.””

I looked at him.

“Who is they?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

That silence.

I was beginning to hate that silence.

“Victor.””

He looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

Finally.

A sentence I had been waiting to hear.

“Robert wasn’t Daniel’s friend.””

My stomach dropped.

“But you said—”

“I said Daniel trusted him.””

Victor looked down.

“That was Daniel’s mistake.””

The words hurt.

Because Daniel was careful.

He wasn’t reckless.

He didn’t trust people easily.

So why Robert?

“Why would Daniel trust him?””

Victor took a breath.

“Because Robert was supposed to help him expose the people who killed your father.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Robert was investigating the same group.””

My thoughts raced.

“Then why take Maya?””

“Because something changed.””

“What changed?””

Victor looked at my phone.

“The file.””

I hated how simple he made it sound.

“The file changed everything.””

A notification appeared.

Another message.

My hands moved immediately.

*You have forty-five minutes.*

Then:

*Come to River Valley Warehouse. Bring the file. No police. No Victor.*

I looked up.

“They know you’re involved.””

Victor nodded.

“Of course they do.””

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

But I knew.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been listening.

Someone close.

I looked at my mother.

Then at Victor.

“Claire.””

Neither of them spoke.

But the name was already there.

The possibility I didn’t want to face.

My sister.

The person who braided my hair before school.

The person who held my hand when our father died.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

Could she really be part of this?

“No,” I whispered.

Victor looked at me.

“You need to prepare yourself.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Facts don’t change because they hurt.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know my sister.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“But I know what secrets do to people.””

My phone rang.

This time, I answered instantly.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then:

“Mommy?””

My entire body froze.

“Maya?””

Her voice.

My daughter’s voice.

Small.

Scared.

But alive.

“Baby, I’m here.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m right here.””

“Mommy, I’m sorry.””

A sob escaped my throat.

“No, no, sweetheart. You did nothing wrong.””

“I tried to be brave.””

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“You are brave.””

A man’s voice interrupted.

Robert.

“Elena.””

My blood turned cold.

“Let me talk to my daughter.””

“You will.””

“Now.””

A pause.

Then Robert said:

“She sounds just like you.””

I hated how calm he was.

“How dare you.””

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

“You kidnapped my child.””

“I protected her.””

I almost laughed.

“Protected her?””

My voice shook.

“You took her.””

“I took her because I knew you would never come if I asked.””

“Where is Daniel’s file?””

There it was.

The reason.

The thing he cared about.

Not Maya.

Not me.

The evidence.

“You knew Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“You helped him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Silence.

For a moment, I heard something unexpected.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I tried to save him.””

My grip tightened on the phone.

“What?””

Robert’s voice became quieter.

“Daniel thought he could fix something that had been broken for twelve years.””

“Did you kill him?””

The silence that followed was terrifying.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t kill Daniel.””

“Then who did?””

Another pause.

Then Robert said:

“Your sister knows.””

The call ended.

I stood there, shaking.

My mother covered her mouth.

Victor looked furious.

“He’s manipulating you.””

“Maybe.””

I looked at the phone.

“But he knows something.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Elena, listen to me. If we go there without knowing what we’re walking into—”

“I’m going.””

“You could be walking into a trap.””

“My daughter is already inside it.””

Nobody could stop me.

Not Victor.

Not my mother.

Not fear.

I grabbed my coat.

My mother stood.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“Elena—”

“You spent twelve years hiding things from me.””

The words were painful.

But true.

“I love you.””

Her eyes filled.

“But right now, I need someone who will tell me the truth.””

Victor picked up his jacket.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“Robert said no Victor.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

His expression hardened.

“Because Daniel’s last request wasn’t to protect the file.””

I waited.

“It was to protect you.””

The words hit me.

Daniel.

Even after death.

Still trying to save me.

We drove toward River Valley Warehouse in silence.

The city passed outside the window.

People walked down sidewalks.

Cars moved through traffic.

Normal life continued.

It felt impossible.

How could the world keep moving when mine had collapsed?

When we got closer, I saw the old industrial buildings.

Abandoned.

Forgotten.

Exactly the kind of place where secrets could survive.

Victor parked several streets away.

“We walk from here.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if someone is watching, we don’t want them to know how many people came.””

I hated that he was right.

We walked through the cold evening air.

Every step toward the warehouse felt like walking toward the truth.

Or toward another funeral.

The building appeared ahead.

Rust covered the metal doors.

Broken windows stared like empty eyes.

Victor stopped.

“There.””

I saw it.

The same faded blue sign from the picture.

River Valley Storage.

My heart raced.

Then I noticed something.

The door was already open.

I looked at Victor.

“Someone is expecting us.””

We stepped inside.

The air smelled like dust and old paper.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

Swinging.

Waiting.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Elena.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

The person who taught me how to ride a bike.

The person who held me after my father died.

The person I never imagined betraying me.

My sister stepped into the light.

Claire.

Her face was covered in tears.

And beside her stood Robert Hale.

Holding Maya’s hand.

Claire looked at me and whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

My heart shattered.

“Why?””

She looked down.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Because Daniel was right.””

I stared at her.

“Right about what?””

Claire lifted her eyes.

“About the person who betrayed him.””

A long silence filled the warehouse.

Then she looked directly at my mother.

May you like

And said:

“It was Dad.””
