Chapter 8: The Call Daniel Made Before He Died

I looked at Claire.

She looked back at me.

And for the first time in my entire life, I didn’t know if I knew my sister at all.

The warehouse was silent except for the rain hitting the broken windows.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for someone to speak.

Waiting for someone to explain.

But there was no explanation that could make this feel normal.

“Claire.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

She looked down.

“Elena…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Like what?””

“Like you’re still my sister.””

The words hurt me as much as they hurt her.

I saw it.

The pain on her face.

But pain didn’t erase what had happened.

Not anymore.

“Did Daniel call you?””

Claire closed her eyes.

That was all I needed to see.

My heart sank.

“You did.””

“I didn’t hurt him.””

“You were the last person he called.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Because he was scared.””

My anger rose.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Because Daniel asked me not to.””

I laughed softly.

Another broken sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around the warehouse.

“Daniel asked me not to. Dad wanted to protect you. Mom was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“But nobody ever thought maybe I deserved the truth.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Elena, listen to me.””

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Three weeks before Daniel disappeared, he came to my house.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to ask me about Dad.””

I frowned.

“Why you?””

“Because I was there.””

The words confused me.

“There for what?””

Claire swallowed.

“The night Dad died.””

The warehouse went quiet.

I stared at her.

“You were there?””

She nodded slowly.

“I was fourteen.””

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Mom never told me.””

“Because she wanted you to remember Dad differently.””

My mother looked away.

I turned to her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

A tear fell down her cheek.

“Claire was a child.””

I stared at my sister.

“What did you see?””

Claire wrapped her arms around herself.

“I saw Dad arguing with Laura.””

The name again.

“She was angry. He was scared.””

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Someone else was there.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her voice became a whisper.

“Robert.””

Everything stopped.

Robert.

The man who held my daughter’s hand.

The man who gave me Daniel’s letter.

The man who said he tried to save him.

“He was there?””

Claire nodded.

“He was working with Dad.””

Victor’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at him.

“No. It isn’t.””

“You said Daniel trusted him.””

“He did.””

“Then why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Daniel didn’t know the whole truth.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What truth?””

Claire took a breath.

“Robert wasn’t helping Dad expose the company.””

I felt sick.

“He was helping Dad hide something.””

“What?””

She looked toward the flash drive that was gone.

“The real file.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Claire looked at him.

“Your brother knows.””

Victor froze.

“What?””

“Robert found out Thomas had a second copy of the evidence.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel found it.””

My heart started racing.

“But the file disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Because Robert took it?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Her eyes filled.

“Daniel gave it to me.””

I couldn’t move.

“What?””

“He gave me the file two days before he disappeared.””

The betrayal was immediate.

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Claire started crying.

“I don’t know.””

That answer destroyed me.

“You don’t know?””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at me.

“Losing you.””

I stepped back.

“You already did.””

The words hit her.

Good.

Maybe she needed to understand what it felt like.

“I thought I could figure it out before telling you.””

“You thought you could handle my husband’s murder alone?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I thought I could keep you safe.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone used that word.

Safe.

Like secrets were protection.

Like lies were kindness.

“Where is the file?””

Claire looked away.

And I knew.

She knew.

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“I hid it.””

“Where?””

“In Dad’s old office.””

My mother gasped.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

My mother’s face went pale.

“That office was destroyed.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Dad built a hidden room.””

My heartbeat increased.

“A hidden room?””

She nodded.

“Daniel found it.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Why didn’t he tell Elena?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because he was trying to find out who else knew about it.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Who knew?””

Claire’s eyes moved toward Robert’s last message.

Then toward the empty warehouse door.

“Everyone.””

The word made my skin crawl.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel realized the file wasn’t the secret.””

“What was?””

Her voice dropped.

“The secret was who had been protecting it all these years.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at our mother.

“It means Dad didn’t hide the evidence alone.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I knew.

I knew before Claire said it.

“Who helped him?””

Claire whispered:

“Mom.””

The room went still.

Again.

Another secret.

Another piece of my family falling apart.

My mother looked broken.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

I turned toward her.

“You always say that.””

Her face crumpled.

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me why.””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Because your father wasn’t the only one being threatened.””

My voice lowered.

“What are you talking about?””

She took a breath.

“After Laura died, someone came after us.””

“Who?””

“Someone inside the company.””

“Robert?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“Someone closer.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

My mother whispered:

“Sarah.””

I froze.

“Sarah was threatening you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed I had something.””

“What?””

“The original evidence.””

The file.

Again.

Always the file.

“But you didn’t have it.””

“No.””

My mother looked at Claire.

“Your sister did.””

Claire nodded.

“I found it years later.””

My mind raced.

“So Daniel found the hidden room.””

“Yes.””

“And he gave the file to Claire.””

“Yes.””

“And Robert took Maya to get it.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Robert didn’t take Maya for the file.””

“Then why?””

Claire’s eyes moved to me.

“He took her because he knows who has been controlling everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Before Claire could answer, the warehouse lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Victor immediately moved toward the entrance.

“Stay back.””

I pulled Maya closer.

Seconds later, a figure appeared in the doorway.

A woman.

Older.

Wet from the rain.

Holding something in her hand.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized her from the photograph.

Sarah Whitmore.

Alive.

She stepped into the warehouse.

Her eyes went directly to me.

“Elena Carter.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then she looked at Maya.

And her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Regret.

“I’m sorry.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“You’re Sarah.””

She nodded.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

The woman my father died protecting.

The woman Daniel died searching for.

She looked at me.

“I know you have questions.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Questions?””

My eyes filled.

“My father died.””

She lowered her gaze.

“My husband died.””

Her face tightened.

“My daughter was kidnapped.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

I stepped forward.

“Who did this?””

She looked at everyone in the room.

Then finally at me.

And said:

“The person who destroyed your family was never outside it.””

A cold silence followed.

“Who?””

Sarah’s eyes moved to the entrance.

To the person standing behind her.

Someone I hadn’t noticed.

Someone who had followed her inside.

My breath caught.

Because the person standing there was wearing Daniel’s old jacket.

The jacket I buried with him.

The jacket only one person could have taken.

Sarah whispered:

“The person who killed Daniel…”

May you like

The figure stepped into the light.

“…is your husband’s brother.””
