Chapter 2: The Message He Never Sent
The officer held the phone steady beneath the bright living room windows.
Marcus stared at the screen as though the words might rearrange themselves if he looked long enough.
The message was short.
Cruel.
Impossible.
*SENDER: MARCUS*
*DON'T CALL ME AGAIN.*
He stepped backward.
"No.""
Officer James Carter, a broad-shouldered Black American man in his early forties, watched him carefully.
"Mr. Reed, do you recognize this number?""
"It's mine.""
"Did you send this message to Aaliyah?""
"No.""
The answer came so quickly that even Marcus seemed startled by the force of it.
He reached toward the evidence sleeve, but Officer Carter pulled it slightly away.
"Please don't touch the evidence.""
Marcus lowered his hand.
"I never sent that. I swear on my life.""
Behind him, Danielle made a sound somewhere between a sob and a gasp.
She turned toward Vanessa.
Vanessa stood beside the open doorway, her pink dress bright against the white walls. Her shopping bags rested near her feet. Both hands were pressed against her stomach, and her eyes had fixed on the phone.
She looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.
Danielle took one slow step toward her.
"Why are you looking at her, Marcus?""
He turned.
"I wasn't—"
"You were.""
Vanessa shook her head rapidly.
"I don't know anything about that message.""
Officer Carter glanced at his colleague, Officer Brooks, who was standing near the entrance with Officer Williams.
"Ma'am," Carter said, "we'll need to speak with everyone who may have had access to this phone.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"Everyone? Why me?""
"Because we are trying to establish what happened.""
"I was with Marcus. That's all.""
Danielle gave a bitter laugh.
"Of course you were.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead with both hands.
"Everybody needs to slow down. My daughter is dead, and somebody is showing me a message I didn't send. I need to understand what happened.""
Officer Carter nodded.
"That's why we're here.""
He carefully removed a printed evidence sheet from his folder.
"Aaliyah's phone was recovered with her belongings. Investigators reviewed the final messages exchanged with several contacts. This message was sent from your number shortly before the emergency call was placed.""
Marcus stared at him.
"How shortly?""
"The exact sequence is still being verified. We're not drawing conclusions about who physically sent it.""
"Then why are you showing it to me like I'm guilty?""
"I'm asking you to explain it.""
"I can't explain something I didn't do!""
His voice echoed across the marble floor.
Aaliyah's portrait stood behind him, her smile frozen above the white flowers.
Danielle closed her eyes.
She had heard that same voice on countless ordinary evenings. Marcus could be loud when he felt challenged, impatient when people questioned him, charming when he wanted something.
But she had never heard him sound so frightened.
Officer Carter continued calmly.
"Where were you yesterday morning?""
"Out of town.""
"With whom?""
Marcus hesitated.
Vanessa lowered her gaze.
Danielle noticed.
"Say it," she told him.
He looked at her.
"With Vanessa.""
"Doing what?""
"Traveling.""
Danielle stared at him in disbelief.
"Traveling?""
"We had a trip planned.""
"Our daughter was dying, and you were on a trip?""
"I didn't know she was dying!""
"You knew something was wrong. I told you she was sick. I told you she needed you.""
Marcus looked away.
Officer Carter's expression tightened slightly.
"Mr. Reed, did you have your phone with you during the trip?""
"Yes.""
"Was anyone else able to access it?""
"No.""
Vanessa shifted her weight.
Marcus saw the movement.
He looked at her.
"Vanessa?""
She lifted her head.
"What?""
"Did you ever use my phone?""
Her lips parted.
"Marcus, this isn't the time.""
"Did you use it?""
"I might have picked it up once.""
"Once?""
"I don't remember every little thing!""
The sharpness of her response made the room fall silent.
Officer Brooks moved closer to the doorway, positioning himself where he could observe Vanessa without blocking her exit.
Danielle folded her arms across her chest.
"What did you do with his phone?""
"Nothing.""
"Then why are you shaking?""
"Because your husband is accusing me of something in front of the police!""
"My husband?"" Danielle repeated.
"That's the part you're worried about?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but she did not look at Danielle.
Instead, she looked at Marcus.
"Tell her to stop.""
Marcus remained still.
For the first time since entering the house, he seemed unsure whether standing beside Vanessa was protecting her or exposing him.
Officer Carter lifted the phone slightly.
"We have not established who sent the message. But we need to know whether Mr. Reed's phone was ever outside his control.""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Danielle stepped closer.
"Did you send my daughter that message?""
"No!""
"Did you tell her to stop calling?""
"No!""
"Then look at me and tell me you had nothing to do with what happened.""
Vanessa raised her eyes.
"I had nothing to do with her death.""
The answer was carefully worded.
Danielle noticed that too.
Marcus stared at Vanessa, his face pale.
"Why didn't you say that the first time?""
"I just did!""
"No. You said you didn't know about the message. Now you're talking about her death.""
Vanessa's composure cracked.
"Because everybody is looking at me like I killed her!""
Nobody answered.
The words hung in the air.
Officer Carter closed his folder.
"Ms. Cole, we would like you to remain available for questioning.""
"Am I under arrest?""
"At this time, we're asking you to cooperate with the investigation.""
Vanessa grabbed the handles of her shopping bags.
"I want a lawyer.""
"You're entitled to seek legal advice," Carter replied.
"We still need to establish the facts.""
Marcus looked between them.
"Vanessa, what aren't you telling me?""
She stared at him for several seconds.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out her own phone.
"I didn't send that message," she said.
"But there is something you need to see.""
Danielle's face hardened.
"What?""
Vanessa unlocked her phone with trembling fingers.
She scrolled through a list of messages, stopped at one conversation, and turned the screen toward Marcus.
His expression changed as he read it.
Because the message wasn't from Aaliyah.
May you like
It was from his own number.
And it had been sent to Vanessa hours before the message appeared on Aaliyah's phone.
