Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn't Hers

“What did you do with the money, Dad?””

Aaliyah's voice remained suspended in the bright living room after the recording stopped.

Marcus stood beside the windows, his face drained of color. Danielle stared at him as though she were seeing a stranger wearing her husband's clothes.

Officer Carter replayed the final seconds.

The man's voice came through clearly.

“If your mother ever finds out what you signed, Aaliyah, we're all finished.””

Then Aaliyah's question.

“What did you do with the money, Dad?””

Carter stopped the playback.

“Mr. Reed, what did your daughter sign?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Nothing important.””

Danielle turned toward him.

“Nothing important?””

“It was a business document.””

“What business?””

Marcus rubbed his palms against his trousers.

“An investment arrangement.””

Officer Carter opened his notebook.

“You previously stated that Aaliyah wasn't involved in your business.””

“She wasn't.””

“Then why would her signature matter?””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“She was helping me organize some paperwork. She signed a receipt acknowledging that she'd seen certain documents.””

Danielle took a step forward.

“Are you telling me our daughter signed a receipt, or are you telling me you put her name on something she didn't understand?””

“I didn't put her name on anything!””

“Then why does she sound frightened?””

Marcus looked at the portrait.

He had no answer.

Officer Carter asked him to describe the transaction in detail. Marcus claimed he had been arranging a private investment with a business associate, but he couldn't provide a consistent explanation for the eighty thousand dollars missing from the joint account.

When Carter asked for the associate's name, Marcus hesitated.

“Leonard Price,” he finally said.

“What's his role?””

“He manages private investments.””

“Where does he work?””

Marcus gave the name of a small investment company.

Carter wrote it down.

“Did Aaliyah know Mr. Price?””

“No.””

“Did she ever meet him?””

“Not that I know of.””

Danielle watched her husband's fingers begin to tremble.

“You're lying about something,” she whispered.

Marcus snapped his head toward her.

“Don't do this.””

“Do what? Ask questions about our daughter?””

“You're taking every word out of context.””

“No. I'm finally hearing the words she left behind.””

Danielle lifted the letter Aaliyah had written to her.

Mom, if anything happens to me, ask Dad why he needed me to stay away from home.

She pressed the paper against her chest.

“You knew she was afraid. You knew she had discovered something. And instead of helping her, you let her leave.””

Marcus's eyes glistened.

“I thought she would come back.””

“When?””

“I don't know.””

“Before or after you finished hiding whatever you were hiding?””

“Danielle, please.””

She stepped away from him.

“Don't ask me for mercy while our daughter is still waiting for answers.””

Officer Carter received a message from the investigative team and checked the screen.

“We've obtained preliminary information about the document referenced in the recording,” he said.

“Aaliyah's name appears on a financial guarantee connected to a business account.””

Marcus went completely still.

Danielle turned toward the officer.

“A financial guarantee?””

“It appears that the document may have been used to support a loan. Investigators are verifying its authenticity and the circumstances under which it was submitted.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That can't be right.””

“Why not?””

“She didn't qualify for a loan like that.””

“That is precisely why we're investigating.””

Carter explained that the preliminary records indicated a substantial liability had been associated with Aaliyah's name. The amount and legal effect had not yet been confirmed, but it was enough to justify obtaining the original documents.

Danielle gripped the back of a chair.

“My daughter was nineteen. She was a college student. She didn't have a business.””

“I understand,” Carter said.

Marcus began pacing.

“Leonard handled the paperwork. I never intended for Aaliyah to be responsible for anything.””

Danielle looked at him sharply.

“You just said she signed a receipt.””

Marcus stopped.

“I meant—”

“Did you know her name was on a loan guarantee?””

He looked down.

“I knew her information had been included.””

The silence that followed was devastating.

Officer Carter closed his notebook.

“Mr. Reed, did Aaliyah consent to having her identity used for that purpose?””

“I thought she understood.””

“That's not an answer.””

Marcus's shoulders slumped.

“She signed something.””

Danielle stared at him.

“You let her believe she was helping you with paperwork?””

“I told her the money would be returned. I told her nobody would be harmed.””

“Who would be harmed?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Vanessa, who had been sitting quietly near the doorway, rose to her feet.

“I know where the original documents are.””

Marcus spun toward her.

“What?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I saw them in your briefcase before we left for the trip.””

“You went through my briefcase?””

“You told me to find the hotel reservation.””

“And you decided to inspect everything else?””

“I saw Aaliyah's name on a folder.””

Marcus approached her.

“What folder?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“The one marked with the investment company's name. There was a copy of her identification and a page with her signature.””

Officer Carter intervened.

“Ms. Cole, where is the briefcase now?””

“At the house.””

“Which house?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“His office. In the study upstairs.””

Danielle's stomach tightened.

Marcus had returned with luggage, laughing as though nothing had happened. His briefcase, however, had not been among the bags he carried through the front door.

“Why didn't you tell the police that earlier?”” Danielle asked.

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“Because I was scared of what was inside it.””

“Scared of Marcus?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

That silence said more than she could have managed with words.

Officer Carter instructed Officer Brooks to document the location and coordinate the appropriate steps for securing the briefcase and obtaining any necessary authorization to examine its contents.

Marcus shook his head.

“You can't just go through my office.””

“We will follow the applicable procedures,” Carter replied.

“You should not move, alter, or destroy any potentially relevant records.””

“I haven't destroyed anything!””

“Then you should have no reason to interfere with their preservation.””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Danielle followed his gaze.

For the first time, she wondered whether the office she had walked past every day for twenty years contained a version of her family she had never been allowed to see.

Vanessa returned to her chair and folded her hands.

“There is something else,” she said.

Marcus's face tightened.

“Enough.””

“No.”” She looked at Danielle.

“Aaliyah came to see me because she thought someone was using her identity. She asked whether Marcus had ever told me about a second account.””

Danielle's heart pounded.

“A second account?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said it was for an investment. But Aaliyah showed me a document that listed a different beneficiary.””

Officer Carter stepped closer.

“Who was the beneficiary?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

He shook his head once, a desperate warning.

She ignored him.

“Danielle Reed.””

Danielle froze.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

Marcus's face went pale.

Vanessa continued, her voice trembling.

“Aaliyah said the account had been created using your information too. She believed someone was preparing to transfer money into it, then make it look as though you had approved the entire arrangement.””

Danielle gripped the chair so tightly her fingers hurt.

“Why would anyone do that?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus took a step toward Vanessa.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I know you told me not to mention the account. I know you told me Danielle would never understand. And I know Aaliyah was terrified when she discovered her name on those papers.””

Officer Carter asked, “Did Aaliyah tell you who she believed was responsible?””

Vanessa looked toward the portrait.

“She said there was one person who could prove what had happened.””

“Who?””

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a small business card.

She placed it on the table.

The name printed across the center made Marcus recoil.

Leonard Price.

On the back, in Aaliyah's handwriting, were five words.

*HE KNOWS WHO SIGNED FOR ME.*

Carter carefully documented the card.

Then his phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked toward Marcus.

When he ended the call, his expression was grim.

“The investigative team has located Leonard Price,” he said.

“He's agreed to provide a statement.””

Marcus gripped the back of a chair.

“What did he say?””

Carter held his gaze.

“Mr. Price claims he never received any documents signed by Aaliyah.””

Danielle felt a chill move through her.

“Then who did?””

Officer Carter looked at the card again.

“That's what we're about to find out.””

He turned toward Marcus.

“Because Mr. Price has also told investigators that someone used his company's credentials to authorize a transfer after Aaliyah left this house.””

Marcus stared at him.

“How much?””

Carter paused.

May you like

“Eighty thousand dollars.””

And for the first time, Marcus looked less like a grieving father than a man who had just realized that someone else might be preparing to expose him.
