Chapter 14: The Truth Marcus Could Never Say

Marcus sat inside the storage unit surrounded by boxes of the past.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Maya held the letter.

Her mother stood beside her.

Waiting.

No one wanted to interrupt.

Because everyone knew.

This was the moment Marcus had been running from.

Finally, he spoke.

“I didn’t tell you because I was ashamed.””

Maya stared.

“Of what?””

He looked at the floor.

“The night your mother disappeared.””

Her mother’s expression changed.

“What about it?””

Marcus took a breath.

“I wasn’t home when it happened.””

Maya frowned.

“What?””

“I told everyone I was.””

Her mother stepped back.

“Marcus.””

“I lied.””

The word echoed.

Maya felt her chest tighten.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because I was trying to fix things.””

“Fix what?””

“Your mother and I were fighting.””

Her mother looked down.

“Yes.””

Marcus continued.

“I thought if I gave us space, everything would calm down.””

“You left.””

“I went to my mother’s house.””

Maya froze.

“Your mother’s house?””

“Yes.””

Her mother whispered:

“The night I disappeared…”

Marcus nodded.

“I was there.””

Maya looked between them.

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because when I came back…”

He stopped.

“What?””

“When I came back, your mother was gone.””

Silence.

Marcus continued.

“My mother told me she left.””

His voice cracked.

“She told me your mother chose to abandon us.””

Maya looked at her mother.

“And you?””

Her mother’s eyes filled.

“I was taken.””

The words landed heavily.

Maya stared.

“What?””

Her mother looked at Marcus.

“I didn’t leave.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“I didn’t know.””

“I was held somewhere.””

“By who?””

Her mother looked at the letter.

“Daniel.””

Maya’s blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her mother’s voice was firm.

“He knew your father would follow whatever story he was given.””

Marcus looked broken.

“I thought you left me.””

“I thought you abandoned me.””

They stared at each other.

Two people destroyed by the same lie.

Maya looked down at the documents.

“Then what happened to Grandma?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Daniel had gone too far.””

Maya looked at him.

“And then?””

“She tried to fix it.””

Her mother nodded.

“She helped me escape.””

Maya froze.

“Wait.””

She looked confused.

“Your mother helped you?””

“Yes.””

“But she was the one who separated you.””

Her mother looked sad.

“She was.””

“Then why help you?””

“Because she realized what she had done.””

Marcus looked at the boxes.

“She spent years trying to undo the damage.””

Maya looked at the letter.

The woman who had been the villain.

The woman who had caused the pain.

Was also the woman trying to expose the person behind it.

Nothing was simple anymore.

“Where is she now?””

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t know.””

The phone in Maya’s hand suddenly vibrated.

Everyone froze.

A message.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

One sentence.

*You found the truth. Now find the person who helped me hide it.*

Attached was a photograph.

Maya opened it.

Her face went pale.

It was a picture from eighteen years ago.

A hospital hallway.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her grandmother.

And one more person.

A person standing beside Daniel.

A person Maya recognized.

Because she had seen that face every day.

Her entire childhood.

She looked at Marcus.

“Dad…”

He saw the photo.

His expression collapsed.

“No.””

“Who is that?””

Marcus whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Who?””

His voice broke.

“That’s my father.””

Maya froze.

“Your grandfather?””

Marcus nodded.

The man everyone thought had disappeared years before.

The man whose name had never been mentioned.

The man who had been missing from every story.

Maya looked at the picture again.

And finally understood.

May you like

This was never just one person’s lie.

It was a family secret passed down through generations.
