Chapter 9: The Night Everyone Remembers Differently

The kitchen felt colder.

Not because the temperature changed.

Because Maya no longer knew who she was standing beside.

Her father.

Her mother.

Or two strangers wearing familiar faces.

Marcus sat down heavily.

“I didn’t kill her.””

The words came too quickly.

Maya stared.

“I didn’t ask that.””

Marcus looked at her.

But the fear in his eyes explained everything.

“You thought it.””

“No.””

“You did.””

Maya looked away.

Because maybe she had.

The idea was impossible.

But after learning her entire life was built on lies, nothing felt impossible anymore.

Her mother moved closer.

“Marcus, tell her.””

He looked at her.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Then tell her what you know.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“I saw my mother the night she died.””

Maya swallowed.

“When?””

“The night your mother disappeared.””

Everything connected.

The documents.

The lies.

The missing years.

The person who had controlled the story.

Her grandmother.

“What happened?””

Marcus stared at the table.

“I went to her house.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted answers.””

Maya leaned forward.

“What answers?””

He looked exhausted.

“I had started realizing things didn’t add up.””

Her mother nodded.

“He finally understood.””

Marcus continued.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Letters between my mother and someone else.””

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I never found out.””

Maya frowned.

“You found letters but not a name?””

“She burned most of them.””

Her mother looked shocked.

“She burned evidence?””

“Yes.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“But one letter survived.””

“Where is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Maya noticed.

“Dad.””

“It’s gone.””

“You lost it?””

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

Marcus looked toward the drawer where he kept old papers.

“I gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Maya stood.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother.””

Her mother looked surprised.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Maya stared.

“You saw her three months ago because of the letter.””

Marcus nodded.

Her mother looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””

“Because I didn’t know what was true anymore.””

Maya walked away from the table.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

She looked at the graduation cake.

Her name.

Her achievement.

Her future.

All surrounded by a past she never knew existed.

“Why today?””

Both of them looked at her.

“Why did all of this happen today?””

Nobody answered.

Maya turned.

“Mom showed up on my graduation day.””

Her mother looked down.

“Dad found out I knew about the letter.””

Marcus looked away.

“Everything exploded today.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the envelope.

“No, this was planned.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Maya picked up the document.

“Someone wanted me to find this today.””

Marcus stared.

“Maya…”

“The letter said after I learned the truth.””

She pointed around the kitchen.

“The cake. The graduation. The timing.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Someone knew this day would matter.””

Her mother slowly nodded.

“She’s right.””

Marcus looked between them.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Not a message.

A call.

The same unknown number.

Marcus stared at it.

Maya whispered:

“Answer it.””

He hesitated.

Then pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

Marcus’s face changed.

Maya watched him.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

The person on the phone spoke again.

And this time, Maya heard it too.

A woman’s voice.

A voice she had never heard before.

But a name she recognized.

“Marcus…”

The caller paused.

“Tell Maya I’m sorry.””

Marcus’s hand tightened around the phone.

Because the person calling was someone who should have been impossible to hear.

Someone who had been dead for years.

Maya stepped closer.

“Dad?””

The voice continued.

“Tell her the truth before I do.””

Marcus whispered one word.

“No…”

Maya looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

His face had lost all color.

May you like

Then he said the one thing Maya never expected.

“Your grandmother is alive.””
