Chapter 7: The Ambulance That Never Reached the Hospital

“Unit Twelve, respond! Possible vehicle pursuing an ambulance carrying an injured woman. Suspect vehicle is a black SUV, heading east on Jefferson Highway.””

Officer Reed's voice crackled through the radio as he sprinted toward his patrol car.

Sarah stood behind the diner's glass doors, watching the ambulance disappear beyond the intersection. Its red lights flashed against the wet pavement, growing smaller with every passing second.

Then she saw the black SUV.

It shot through the intersection behind the ambulance, its headlights blazing.

Maya grabbed Sarah's sleeve and signed frantically.

Mommy. They're going after Mommy.

“I know, sweetheart.””

Sarah reached for her phone, but her hands were shaking too badly to unlock it on the first attempt.

Outside, Officer Reed climbed into his cruiser.

“Dispatch, get me the ambulance's location. I want another unit on that route immediately.””

Officer Lena Brooks remained beside the diner entrance, one hand resting near her radio.

“Marcus, I'm coming with you.””

“No. Secure the suspect and the witnesses.””

“That's my patient in that ambulance.””

“And I need someone here who can understand this girl's statements.””

Lena looked through the glass at Maya.

For a moment, her expression softened.

“Then don't let anyone move her.””

She rushed toward her patrol car.

Sarah turned back into the diner.

Rick sat in a booth beneath the bright fluorescent lights, his wrists secured in front of him. His gray uniform shirt was rumpled, and a paper napkin lay crumpled beneath his fingers.

He watched Sarah approach.

“You need to get that child out of here,” he whispered.

Sarah stopped.

“What?””

Rick leaned forward.

“Damon has people everywhere. The SUV isn't the only problem.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You knew this was going to happen?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know about the SUV?””

Rick swallowed.

“Because I heard the call.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Rick, if you know something that could save her mother, tell the police.””

He glanced toward Maya, who was standing beside the counter, watching them.

“Not here.””

Sarah laughed once, bitterly.

“You've spent the whole night telling everyone what they couldn't do. Now you're suddenly worried about where we talk?””

Rick's face tightened.

“I deserve that.””

“You deserve a lot worse if you know something and keep quiet.””

He lowered his voice.

“Damon told me the ambulance route was going to be changed tonight.””

Sarah felt the floor tilt beneath her.

“Why?””

“He said there was a problem at the hospital. That his people would handle it.””

“What people?””

Rick shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Sarah seized the edge of the booth.

“Did you know he was going to attack Maya's mother?””

“No!””

The answer came out so loudly that Maya flinched.

Rick immediately lowered his voice.

“I thought they were moving her somewhere private. Damon said she was unstable, that she'd stolen company records. He told me he needed Maya because she was the only person who knew where the original documents were.””

Sarah stared at him.

“And you believed him?””

Rick's eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to believe him. He offered to pay off my debts. He knew about my daughter. He knew where she went to school.””

Sarah's anger faltered for half a second.

Then she remembered Maya's muddy shoes, her trembling hands, and the way she had looked at the locked diner doors.

“Being afraid doesn't make what you did acceptable,” Sarah said.

“But you can still help fix it.””

Rick nodded slowly.

“There's something else.””

He looked toward the front windows.

“Damon has a second phone. He keeps it in his car. The messages on the phone you took are only part of the arrangement.””

Sarah's stomach tightened.

“What's on the second phone?””

“I don't know. But I saw a photograph on it earlier. A map of the hospital. The ambulance entrance was circled.””

Sarah went cold.

Before she could respond, Maya rushed toward them.

She had found the cracked photograph of her father again. She held it in one hand and signed with the other.

The man on the phone. Daddy said ledger.

Sarah nodded.

“Yes. Your father said your mother knows where it is.””

Maya shook her head and signed again.

No. Mommy gave it to me.

Sarah stared at her.

“What?””

Maya opened the torn lining of her pink jacket.

From a tiny pocket stitched inside, she pulled out a flat brass key attached to a small plastic tag.

Sarah knelt.

“What's that for?””

Maya signed slowly.

Daddy's box. Mommy said never give it to Damon.

Sarah looked at the key.

The tag bore a faded symbol: a bluebird with one wing spread.

The same bird painted above the Bluebird Diner's entrance.

Sarah's breath caught.

“Rick,” she said, turning toward him.

“What does this key open?””

Rick stared at it.

His face changed.

“Where did she get that?””

“Answer me.””

He looked from the key to the diner sign.

Then he whispered, “The old safe.””

“What old safe?””

Rick glanced toward the kitchen.

“Before I became manager, this place belonged to Daniel. He used to run the books out of a small office behind the freezer. When the business changed hands, Damon ordered the room sealed.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You told me that room was just storage.””

“It was supposed to be.””

Maya stepped forward and signed something sharply.

Daddy hid it here.

Rick shook his head.

“No. That's impossible.””

Sarah stood.

“Then let's find out.””

She led Maya toward the kitchen, with Rick following under the officer's instructions. The stainless-steel counters reflected the overhead lights. The grill hissed quietly, and the smell of burnt coffee hung in the air.

Behind a stack of unused crates stood a narrow door painted the same white as the wall.

Sarah had worked in that kitchen for three years.

She had never noticed it.

Rick pulled the crates aside.

A brass lock sat beneath the handle.

Maya held up the key.

Her fingers trembled as she inserted it.

Click.

The door opened.

Inside was a small office covered in dust. An old desk stood against the wall, and a metal safe was bolted beneath it.

Maya knelt and pushed the key into the safe's lock.

It turned.

Sarah opened the heavy door.

Inside lay a black ledger, a bundle of envelopes, and a photograph of two identical boys standing beside a woman outside a brick house.

On the back, someone had written:

Daniel and David. Before Damon chose which brother would die.

Sarah's blood ran cold.

She opened the ledger.

Names. Dates. Payments. Company accounts.

And on the final page, a handwritten note.

If Maya has this, tell her I never stopped looking for her.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Then Maya pointed toward the bottom of the safe.

A small recording device sat beneath the ledger.

Sarah pressed the button.

A man's voice filled the tiny room.

“I'm Daniel Brooks. If you're hearing this, Damon has found out about the ledger.””

The recording crackled.

Then the voice continued.

“But the ledger isn't the most dangerous thing I've hidden.””

A pause.

A breath.

“The real proof is the name of the man who ordered my death.””

Sarah looked at Maya.

The little girl was staring at the recorder, tears slipping silently down her cheeks.

Then the recording reached its final sentence.

“And if Damon is still alive, it means the man who gave that order is still protecting him.””

The device clicked off.

From the front of the diner came the sound of a car door slamming.

Then a man's voice shouted through the entrance.

“Police! Nobody move!””

Sarah turned toward the kitchen door.

A uniformed officer stood there, breathing hard.

“Which one of you opened the safe?””

Rick raised his cuffed hands.

“I did not—”

The officer's eyes fixed on the ledger.

Then he reached for his radio.

“Dispatch, I have the evidence.””

He paused, listening.

His expression hardened.

“No,” he said quietly.

“I don't think you understand.””

He looked directly at Sarah.

Then he drew his weapon.

“Everybody step away from the safe.””

Maya grabbed Sarah's hand.

May you like

The officer's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because the man who ordered Daniel Brooks killed is standing right behind me.””
