Chapter 9: The Man Who Inherited the Empire
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The neon sign above the Bluebird Diner buzzed softly, washing Daniel Brooks's face in alternating bands of red and gold.
“Franklin is dead?”” Daniel finally asked.
Rick nodded.
“I heard it from Damon himself. He said his father had a heart attack at home. Private funeral. No autopsy.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Franklin was healthy.””
“Apparently, he wasn't.””
Daniel looked toward Officer Reed.
“Where did it happen?””
“His estate outside the city,” Reed answered.
“We haven't verified any of this yet.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then verify it.””
Reed gave him a measured look.
“I'm going to need you to explain why a man reported dead two years ago is standing in my parking lot.””
Daniel looked down at Maya.
She was still holding his hand.
“I'll explain everything. But first, I need to know whether her mother is alive.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“The ambulance was followed by a black SUV. Officer Reed went after it.””
Reed immediately raised his radio.
“Dispatch, confirm the location of the ambulance transporting the injured female from Jefferson Highway.””
Static answered.
He tried again.
“Dispatch, respond.””
Nothing.
Daniel's expression changed.
“That's not good.””
Sarah felt the old fear return.
“Can they lose the ambulance?””
“Not if the radio's working,” Reed replied.
He moved toward his cruiser, but before he could open the door, his phone rang.
He answered.
“Reed.””
A voice spoke rapidly from the other end.
Reed's face went rigid.
“What do you mean, the ambulance never arrived?””
He listened.
“Where was it last seen?””
Another pause.
“Send every available unit to the route. Nobody approaches that vehicle alone.””
He ended the call and looked at Daniel.
“The ambulance was found abandoned on the service road. The driver and one paramedic are alive. The patient is missing.””
Maya's fingers went limp in Daniel's hand.
Sarah caught her before she could fall.
The little girl signed frantically.
Mommy. Where's Mommy?
Sarah knelt.
“We're going to find her.””
Maya shook her head violently.
They took her.
Daniel rose to his feet.
“Who was in the SUV?””
“We don't know yet.””
“Then find out.””
Reed's jaw tightened.
“Mr. Brooks, you're not in charge of this investigation.””
Daniel stared at him.
“No. But I know the people who are responsible.””
He turned toward the diner.
“Damon doesn't need the ledger anymore. He has the money, the companies, and now his father's power. What he needs is the one person who can connect him to the murder.””
Sarah understood.
“Maya's mother.””
Daniel nodded.
“She knows where I hid the original records. She knows what Franklin ordered. And she knows what happened the night I disappeared.””
Maya tugged at his sleeve.
She signed slowly, making sure he saw every movement.
Mommy said Franklin was not the only bad man.
Daniel's face went pale.
He knelt beside her.
“What else did she tell you?””
Maya touched her chest, then pointed toward the road.
She said the person who helped Franklin is someone we know.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“Did she give you a name?””
Maya shook her head.
Then she made a small gesture with her fingers, pointing toward the diner's front entrance.
Sarah followed her gaze.
Rick was standing beside the counter, watching them.
His expression was unreadable.
Daniel slowly turned toward him.
“What did you do for Franklin Price?””
Rick flinched.
“Nothing.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Then why did my daughter just point at you?””
Maya shook her head and signed quickly.
Sarah watched her hands.
Not Rick. The other man.
“The other man?”” Sarah asked.
Maya pointed toward the photograph still lying on the counter.
The picture of Daniel and David.
Then she pointed at Damon.
Sarah felt a cold sensation creep up her spine.
“Damon?””
Maya nodded.
He helped Franklin.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I know Damon helped him. That's why I disappeared.””
Maya shook her head again.
Her hands moved more slowly this time.
Not Damon. The other man who looks like Daddy.
The parking lot seemed to tilt.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“David?””
Maya nodded.
Sarah looked from the photograph to Daniel.
“But David was reported dead.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“That was the story they told everyone.””
He looked toward the dark highway.
“David was my twin brother. He worked with Franklin for years. He knew every account, every company, every secret. When I discovered the money laundering, David told me he'd help me get the evidence out.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Then he disappeared the same night Franklin's men came for me.””
Rick slowly sank into a chair.
“I thought David was dead.””
Daniel turned on him.
“That's what everyone thought.””
He paused.
“But Franklin never trusted Damon enough to tell him the whole truth. David was the one person who knew where the original ledger was hidden.””
Sarah felt her stomach twist.
“Then who is Damon?””
Daniel looked at her.
“My brother's son.””
Silence.
“Damon isn't my twin brother,” Daniel continued.
“He's David's son. He was raised inside Franklin's operation, and he believes everything belongs to him.””
Sarah stared at the photograph.
The resemblance made sense now. Damon had the same family features, but the identity the family had hidden was far more complicated than anyone at the diner had realized.
Daniel looked at Officer Reed.
“David was supposed to be dead. Franklin needed the world to believe that one son was dead and the other had disappeared. It kept the inheritance clean and the investigators away.””
Reed shook his head.
“That still doesn't explain who ordered the accident.””
Daniel's eyes darkened.
“Franklin did. But David helped him arrange it.””
Maya signed sharply.
Daddy said David was good.
Daniel's face softened with pain.
“He was good once, baby.””
Then he looked away.
“People can change.””
Sarah thought of Rick, of the money on his phone, and of the way he'd tried to justify his choices.
She wondered how many people had once been good before fear taught them to betray everyone around them.
Officer Reed's radio crackled.
“Unit Twelve, we have a possible location for the missing female. Abandoned warehouse, north service road. Multiple vehicles observed.””
Daniel immediately started toward the parking lot.
Reed blocked his path.
“You're not going anywhere.””
“That's my wife!””
“And if you rush into a warehouse full of armed men, I may have two victims to recover instead of one.””
Daniel's fists clenched.
Sarah stepped beside him.
“He's right. We need a plan.””
Daniel looked at her, breathing hard.
For a moment, Sarah thought he might ignore them both.
Then Maya reached for his hand.
She signed one sentence.
Daddy, don't leave me again.
Daniel closed his eyes.
He lowered himself to her level and pressed her hands between his palms.
“I won't.””
He stood and looked at Reed.
“Then tell me what you need.””
Reed studied him before answering.
“I need every detail about David, Damon, Franklin, and that warehouse. And I need you to trust that we'll get your wife back.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then listen carefully.””
He described the warehouse, the security gates, the hidden entrance, and the private road leading behind the property. He had worked there years earlier, before the brothers' business split into competing factions.
When he finished, Reed spoke into his radio.
“Request tactical support. Suspected kidnapping. Possible organized-crime connection. Proceed with caution.””
Sarah stood beside Maya as the officers prepared to leave.
The girl kept watching the highway.
Then she touched Sarah's arm and signed something unexpected.
I saw David tonight.
Sarah's heart stopped.
“When?””
Maya pointed toward the black SUV that had followed the ambulance.
He was driving.
Daniel turned so quickly that Sarah heard his shoes scrape the pavement.
“What did you say?””
Maya repeated the signs.
The man who looks like Daddy. He was driving the black car.
Daniel's face lost all color.
He looked at the photograph.
Then at the road.
“That's impossible.””
Sarah swallowed.
“Why?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Because David has been dead for two years.””
A phone vibrated in Officer Reed's hand.
Unknown number.
He answered on speaker.
A man's voice filled the parking lot.
“Officer Reed, I believe you have something that belongs to my family.””
Reed's expression hardened.
“Identify yourself.””
The man laughed softly.
“You already know who I am.””
Daniel stepped closer to the phone.
“David?””
A pause.
Then the voice answered.
“Hello, little brother.””
Daniel's face crumpled with disbelief.
“Where is my wife?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Let her go!””
“Bring me the ledger.””
Daniel looked toward Sarah.
She could see the decision forming in his eyes.
The caller continued.
“You have one hour. The ledger for your wife. No police. No tricks.””
Reed shook his head, signaling Daniel not to agree.
But Daniel wasn't listening.
“Where do I meet you?””
The caller gave an address.
Then he added one final sentence.
“And Daniel? Come alone.””
The call ended.
Maya clutched her father's coat.
Sarah looked at Officer Reed.
Reed lowered the phone and spoke quietly.
“We're not going to let him walk into that warehouse alone.””
Daniel stared at the darkness beyond the highway.
“No,” he said.
“We're going to bring my wife home.””
May you like
He looked down at Maya.
“And we're going to find out which brother really died two years ago.””
