Chapter 11: The Daughter They Buried

Marcus stepped through the doorway with his weapon lowered but ready.

Raymond followed.

Tank emerged last, leaning on his walking stick.

Arthur Mercer looked at them without surprise.

He was older than Marcus remembered from the photographs, but his posture remained straight. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his leather vest looked almost new.

The black stone in his ring caught the light.

"Thomas," Arthur said.

"You look terrible.""

Tank's jaw tightened.

"You look exactly as rotten as I remember.""

Arthur chuckled.

Then he turned to Marcus.

"My boy.""

"Don't call me that.""

Arthur's smile thinned.

"Still angry. Your mother always said you had Michael's temper.""

Marcus took a step forward.

"You don't get to talk about my mother.""

"I loved Elaine.""

"You terrorized her.""

"I protected her.""

"You killed my father.""

Arthur's expression shifted.

For the first time, the room seemed to grow colder.

"Michael Williams was a decent man," he said.

"A foolish man, but decent. He took responsibility for a child that wasn't his.""

Marcus stared at him.

"You're saying you're my biological father.""

"I'm saying Elaine made a mistake when she fell in love with Michael.""

"She made a mistake when she ever trusted you.""

Arthur's smile disappeared.

He turned toward Daniel.

"Your father was the same way. He thought loyalty meant telling the truth, even when the truth destroyed everyone around him.""

Daniel pulled against his restraints.

"You murdered my mother!""

Arthur ignored him.

"I offered her money. A new identity. A safe home. All she had to do was give me the records.""

"And she refused," Tank said.

"She refused because she believed men like you could change the world by exposing them."" Arthur sighed.

"Look where that got her.""

Marcus moved toward Daniel.

Arthur raised one hand.

Two men appeared from the adjoining room, both carrying guns.

"Careful," Arthur said.

"I would hate for this reunion to end badly.""

Raymond shifted his stance.

Arthur noticed.

"Raymond Cole. Always the loyal soldier. Tell me, how much did you enjoy being second in command to a man who never knew who he was?""

Raymond's face darkened.

"Keep talking.""

Arthur laughed.

"You see, Marcus? This is why the club survived. Everyone had a price.

Everyone had a weakness. I simply learned what each man wanted.""

He walked to the desk and opened a drawer.

Inside lay a stack of documents tied with a red ribbon.

"Here is your precious ledger," Arthur said.

"The records your mother tried to hide. The records Daniel risked his life to recover.""

Marcus stared at the papers.

"Then give them to me.""

"Gladly. In exchange for something small.""

"What?""

Arthur took out a photograph.

It showed a teenage girl standing outside a school. She had dark hair, a backpack, and a familiar crease above her left eyebrow.

Marcus stopped breathing.

The girl looked about sixteen.

On the back of the photograph was a name.

*Sophie Williams.*

His daughter's name.

The name Marcus and Sarah had chosen before she was born.

"Where did you get that?"" Marcus whispered.

Arthur watched his reaction.

"Your daughter is alive.""

Marcus's knees nearly buckled.

Tank closed his eyes.

Arthur continued calmly.

"She was taken to a private foster home after the fire. Her identity was changed. Her records were sealed. I arranged it because I knew you would never stop searching if you believed she was alive.""

Marcus could barely hear him.

"Where is she?""

"Give me the ledger.""

"Where is my daughter?""

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Bring me the original records, and I'll give you her address.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Sixteen years.

Sixteen years of birthdays he had believed she would never celebrate. Sixteen Christmas mornings when he had imagined what it would have been like to watch her grow.

He wanted to seize Arthur by the throat.

He wanted to force the truth out of him.

But Arthur had spent decades manipulating people through fear, and Marcus refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing him lose control.

"You don't have the ledger," Marcus said.

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"You brought copies.""

"I brought nothing.""

Arthur looked toward Tank.

"Then where is it?""

Tank smiled faintly.

"Somewhere you'll never find it.""

Arthur struck him across the face.

Tank staggered, catching himself against the desk.

Marcus lunged forward, but Raymond blocked him.

"Not yet," Raymond whispered.

Arthur adjusted his ring.

"You're both making this unnecessarily difficult.""

He nodded to one of his men.

The man approached Daniel and placed a gun against his head.

Marcus went still.

Arthur lifted the photograph of Sophie.

"One life for another. Your choice.""

Daniel's voice came out hoarse.

"Marcus, don't give him anything.""

Arthur pressed the gun harder against Daniel's temple.

"Silence.""

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"What do you want?""

"The ledger. Every page. Every copy.""

"And Sophie?""

"You'll receive her address.""

"Proof she's alive.""

Arthur smiled.

"Of course.""

Marcus knew it was a lie.

Arthur had spent his life treating promises as tools, not obligations.

But Sophie was alive.

That was enough to change everything.

Marcus slowly reached inside his jacket.

Arthur's eyes gleamed.

"Good boy.""

Marcus pulled out the small plastic container Lila had given him.

Arthur frowned.

"What is that?""

"Dinner.""

Marcus placed the container on the table.

"My friend's daughter packed food for her father because she thought he might starve. You used that child's fear as entertainment.""

Arthur's face darkened.

"Don't lecture me.""

"No. I'm reminding you that you don't understand family.""

Marcus moved his hand toward the desk.

Raymond saw the signal.

He threw a metal chair into the nearest gunman's legs.

The man stumbled.

Tank swung his walking stick into the second man's wrist, knocking his weapon away.

Daniel threw himself sideways, dragging the chair with him.

The gunshot struck the ceiling.

Marcus tackled Arthur against the desk.

They crashed into the wall.

Arthur fought with surprising strength, driving an elbow into Marcus's ribs. Marcus grunted and struck him once across the jaw.

The silver ring cut Marcus's cheek.

Arthur smiled through the blood.

"You really are my son.""

Marcus grabbed his wrist.

"No. I'm Michael Williams's son.""

He twisted Arthur's arm behind his back and forced him to the floor.

Raymond secured the two gunmen while Tank freed Daniel.

For several seconds, the farmhouse was filled with grunts, curses, and the clatter of overturned furniture.

Then the distant sound of sirens rose outside.

Officer Price had arrived with backup.

Arthur began laughing.

Marcus pressed him harder against the floor.

"What's funny?""

Arthur turned his head.

"You think you've won.""

Marcus glanced toward the door.

Police officers were shouting outside. Raymond had secured the gunmen. Daniel was free.

For the first time that night, Marcus believed they might actually get out alive.

Then Arthur spoke again.

"Your daughter isn't the only child I saved.""

Marcus froze.

Arthur looked up at him.

"There were three babies that night. Three children whose records I changed.""

Marcus's grip tightened.

"Where are they?""

Arthur smiled.

"One is your daughter. One belongs to Daniel. And the third...""

He leaned closer.

"The third was taken by a woman who works in the hospital where your children are staying.""

Marcus felt ice spread through his veins.

Denise.

The woman who had protected Lila and Noah.

The woman who had gone back to the community hall to collect Lila's belongings.

The woman who had been at the hospital when the intruders arrived.

Arthur watched the realization cross his face.

"You should have stayed with the children, Marcus.""

A gunshot echoed from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Daniel stumbled toward the doorway.

"NOAH!""

Marcus released Arthur and ran.

May you like

Because somewhere in the farmhouse, a child had just screamed.

And Marcus no longer knew which of the people he trusted had been protecting his family.
