Chapter 12: Three Children, One Terrible Secret
The scream came from the second floor.
Marcus reached the stairs first, taking them two at a time.
"NOAH!""
A door slammed overhead.
Then came the sound of running footsteps.
Raymond shouted from below.
"Marcus, wait!""
Marcus ignored him.
At the top of the stairs, he found a narrow hallway with three closed doors. One stood slightly open, spilling yellow light across the floor.
He kicked it wide.
Inside was a small bedroom with a metal bed, a broken lamp, and a window overlooking the barn.
Noah sat on the bed, crying.
Beside him stood Denise Harper.
She held a handgun.
Marcus stopped in the doorway.
For a moment, neither moved.
"Denise," he said carefully.
Her face crumpled.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
Noah scrambled toward the far side of the bed.
"She said she was taking me to Mommy!""
Marcus raised his hands.
"Put the gun down.""
Denise's fingers trembled.
"I never wanted this.""
"Then put it down.""
She looked at Noah.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
Marcus took one slow step forward.
"Denise, look at me. You helped Lila all night. You protected those children. Whatever Arthur told you, whatever he threatened you with, we can deal with it.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"He has my son.""
Marcus stopped.
"What?""
Denise's breath hitched.
"My boy, Ethan. He's eight. Arthur took him three days ago. He said if I didn't do what he asked, I'd never see him again.""
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because he said he'd kill Ethan if I told anyone.""
She shook her head desperately.
"I didn't know he was going to hurt Noah. He told me I was bringing him to his mother. He said Rebecca was waiting.""
Noah sobbed.
"She locked me in the car!""
Denise flinched as though he'd struck her.
"I didn't know you were there until the men brought you upstairs.""
Marcus's chest tightened.
"Where's Lila?""
Denise looked away.
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
"Where is she?""
"Arthur's men took her.""
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
Marcus stepped forward.
Denise raised the gun.
"Don't!""
He stopped.
"Where did they take her?""
"I don't know. Arthur said she'd be with her father.""
"Noah's father is downstairs.""
Denise shook her head.
"Not Daniel.""
Marcus stared at her.
"What are you talking about?""
She wiped her face with her free hand.
"Lila's biological father isn't Daniel Bennett.""
Noah stared at her through his tears.
Marcus felt the room spin.
"What?""
"Arthur told me the truth. Daniel raised her, but he isn't her father. Her mother had another child before she met Daniel. Arthur changed the records.""
Marcus remembered Arthur's words.
Three babies.
One was his daughter.
One belonged to Daniel.
And the third—
"Who is Lila's father?"" Marcus demanded.
Denise's eyes met his.
"Thomas Callahan.""
The silence was absolute.
Marcus turned toward the doorway.
Tank stood behind him, pale and trembling.
For a moment, the old biker looked as though he might collapse.
"Denise," he whispered, "who told you that?""
"Arthur.""
Tank shook his head.
"No.""
Denise's voice cracked.
"He said you had a daughter with Rebecca before Daniel married her. He said you abandoned her, and Daniel raised her as his own.""
Tank leaned against the wall.
Marcus stared at him.
"Is it true?""
Tank opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus's voice rose.
"Is it true?""
Tank's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
The word landed like a blow.
Marcus turned away, trying to process everything.
Tank had been his closest friend.
He had mourned him for seventeen years.
Now he was learning that Tank had a daughter, that Daniel had raised her, and that Arthur had used the secret to manipulate all of them.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" Marcus asked.
Tank looked devastated.
"Because Rebecca was afraid Arthur would take her. She asked me to stay away. Daniel loved her, and he promised to raise Lila as his own.""
Marcus looked toward Noah.
The little boy was still crying.
"And Noah?""
Tank shook his head.
"Noah is Daniel and Rebecca's biological son.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
At least one part of the story made sense.
Then he opened them.
"Where did Arthur take Lila?""
Tank straightened.
"To the red house.""
Denise shook her head.
"No. He said something about the river.""
Tank went rigid.
Marcus noticed.
"What river?""
Tank's face had gone gray.
"The Blackwater River.""
"Why?""
Tank stared at him.
"Because that's where he took the third baby.""
Marcus felt the world tilt.
"The third baby?""
Tank nodded.
"Your daughter.""
For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.
Then the pieces fell into place.
The baby in the river.
The missing records.
The false hospital report.
His daughter, whom he had mourned for twelve years, had been taken from the hospital and hidden by Arthur's network.
But why the river?
Tank gripped the walking stick.
"Arthur arranged a transfer that night. He told everyone the baby had died. Then he sent her to a woman who worked for him.""
Marcus's voice was barely audible.
"And Denise?""
Denise shook her head desperately.
"I didn't know about the baby. I swear. I only knew Arthur had my son.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Where is Ethan?""
She swallowed.
"At the old ferry station.""
Tank immediately turned toward the stairs.
"We need to move.""
Marcus caught his arm.
"Not until you tell me everything.""
Tank looked at him, anguish etched across his face.
"Marcus, if we waste another minute, Lila could be gone.""
"And my daughter?""
Tank's eyes flickered.
"Arthur told me she was dead. I believed him until I saw the photograph.""
Marcus released him.
He couldn't forgive Tank.
Not yet.
But he couldn't abandon the children to settle old scores, either.
He turned to Denise.
"Put the gun down.""
She stared at him.
"What happens to me?""
"You tell the police everything. You help us find your son. Then you answer for what you did.""
Denise's hand shook.
Slowly, she lowered the weapon and placed it on the floor.
Marcus moved forward and kicked it out of reach.
Noah ran into his arms.
"Where's Lila?""
Marcus held him tightly.
"We're going to bring her back.""
Noah buried his face in Marcus's jacket.
"Promise?""
Marcus thought of his own daughter.
He thought of all the promises people had made and broken.
Then he answered.
"I promise I'll do everything I can.""
Ten minutes later, Officer Price had secured the farmhouse and arrested Arthur Mercer.
Daniel was being treated by paramedics. Raymond remained with the officers while Marcus and Tank prepared to leave for the old ferry station.
Before they departed, Price pulled Marcus aside.
"We recovered several phones from Arthur's office. One contains messages about three children who were moved through his network in 2009.""
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
"Names?""
Price checked the screen.
"One was registered under the name Sophie Williams.""
Marcus's knees weakened.
"What about the others?""
Price scrolled.
"An infant named Lila Callahan. And a boy named Ethan Harper.""
Marcus stared at him.
"All three were taken from their families?""
"That's what the messages suggest.""
"Can you locate Sophie?""
Price shook his head.
"The records are incomplete. But there's a reference to a social worker named Margaret Shaw. She was employed at St. Mary's Hospital in 2009.""
Marcus looked toward Tank.
"The hospital where Sophie was born.""
Tank nodded slowly.
"Arthur had people everywhere.""
Marcus climbed into the truck.
His phone rang before he could start the engine.
An unfamiliar woman spoke.
"Is this Marcus Williams?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Margaret Shaw. I was a social worker at St. Mary's Hospital.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"How did you get this number?""
"I've been trying to contact you for twelve years.""
"Why?""
There was a long silence.
Then the woman said, "Because your daughter survived the fire.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Where is she?""
"I can't tell you that over the phone.""
"Tell me now!""
"Mr. Williams, listen carefully. The woman who raised Sophie is dead. Sophie has been searching for her biological parents, and she recently discovered the adoption papers were falsified.""
Marcus's heart pounded.
"Where is she?""
"She's in Millbrook.""
He stared at the snowy road ahead.
"Where?""
Margaret's voice dropped to a whisper.
"She's a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital.""
Marcus felt his breath catch.
"What's her name?""
The answer came softly.
"Dr. Sophie Bennett.""
Marcus went completely still.
Bennett.
The same surname as Daniel.
The same family name tied to the crash, the missing mother, and the three children whose lives had been stolen.
"Why would my daughter have Daniel Bennett's surname?"" he whispered.
Margaret hesitated.
"Because Daniel and Rebecca adopted her.""
Marcus looked at Tank.
The old biker's face had collapsed.
The phone crackled.
Then Margaret added one final sentence.
"Mr. Williams, there's something else. Sophie called me an hour ago. She said she found the original birth records, and she was on her way to confront Arthur Mercer.""
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
"She's here?""
"Yes.""
"At the farmhouse?""
"I don't know.""
A sharp sound came through the line.
Margaret gasped.
Then the call ended.
Marcus stared at his phone.
Tank reached for the dashboard.
"Marcus?""
He turned the key.
The engine roared to life.
"My daughter is in danger.""
As the truck pulled away from the farmhouse, a new message appeared on his screen.
It contained a photograph of a young woman in a white medical coat, standing beside a hospital bed.
Her face was unmistakable.
She had Sarah's eyes.
Marcus's eyes.
And above her eyebrow was the tiny crease he remembered from the ultrasound.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
*Come alone if you want to meet your daughter.*
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*Ask Daniel why he never told you what happened to your wife.*
