Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WHO RUINED THE CAKEThe ballroom remained silent long after Dominic Moretti ordered his men to search the mansion.

Nobody touched the ruined birthday cake.
Nobody spoke above a whisper.
The white powder found inside the silver container had changed everything.
Only twenty minutes earlier, Ethan had been laughing beneath a ceiling covered in golden balloons.
Now he stood beside his father, staring at the broken cake on the marble floor.
Lily stood several feet away.
She was still holding the hem of her little pink dress.
Her mother, Anna, kept one arm around her.
“Lily,” Anna whispered, “tell Mr. Moretti exactly what you saw.”
Lily nodded.
“The man had a silver box.”
Dominic crouched in front of her.
“What did he do with it?”
“He opened it.”
“Where?”
“In the kitchen.”
“Then what?”
“He put something white inside the cake.”
Dominic's eyes hardened.
“Did he see you?”
Lily nodded again.
“I was hiding behind the big table.”
“Why didn't you tell anyone?”
The little girl looked down.
“Because he told me not to.”
Dominic's voice softened.
“What did he say?”
Lily swallowed.
“He said if I told, my mommy would disappear.”
Anna's face went white.
Dominic slowly stood.
Marco, his security chief, stepped forward.
“Boss.”
Dominic didn't look away from Lily.
“Find out who threatened this child.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
The guards moved through the ballroom.
Guests immediately began whispering.
Some were frightened.
Others were already trying to leave.
Dominic turned toward them.
“Nobody leaves.”
The room became silent again.
A wealthy businessman raised his hand nervously.
“Mr. Moretti, surely this is unnecessary.”
Dominic looked at him.
“My son was minutes away from eating poisoned food.”
The man lowered his hand.
Dominic continued.
“Until I know who did this, everyone remains here.”
Nobody argued.
They knew Dominic Moretti.
He had built his empire by making people understand that his warnings were not suggestions.
But tonight, his anger wasn't about money.
It was about Ethan.
His only son.
The child who had been born with a severe cashew allergy.
One accidental bite could have put Ethan into anaphylactic shock.
Dominic looked at the cake.
He imagined his son sitting there, smiling, reaching for the first slice.
His hands curled into fists.
Then Ethan tugged on his father's sleeve.
“Dad?”
Dominic looked down.
“Are you okay?”
Ethan nodded.
“Lily saved me.”
Dominic glanced at the little girl.
“Yes.”
Ethan walked toward her.
Anna immediately became nervous.
But Ethan simply held out a small red toy car.
“This is my favorite.”
Lily stared at it.
“You can have it.”
“Why?”
“Because you saved me.”
Lily slowly accepted the toy.
“Thank you.”
Dominic watched the exchange.
Something about it bothered him.
Not the children.
The fact that Lily had known exactly where the cake was dangerous.
She hadn't guessed.
She had seen someone put the substance there.
And she had remembered details an adult might have missed.
A silver box.
A red mark.
A hidden hallway.
Dominic turned toward Marco.
“Bring me the camera footage.”
Marco's expression changed.
“There's a problem.”
“What?”
“The kitchen camera was disabled for twelve minutes.”
Dominic stared at him.
“By whom?”
“We're checking.”
“Check faster.”
Marco nodded.
Then another guard rushed into the room.
“Sir.”
Dominic turned.
“We found the guest badge.”
The guard held it up.
“Name?”
“Anthony Bell.”
Dominic frowned.
“That name isn't on the guest list.”
“No.”
“Then who invited him?”
The guard hesitated.
“We don't know.”
Dominic took the badge.
It was expensive.
Custom-made.
But there was something strange.
The back carried an old Moretti family emblem.
An emblem that hadn't been used publicly in years.
Dominic looked toward the family portrait.
His grandfather stood in the center.
His father beside him.
And a young Dominic at twelve years old.
The portrait had been painted decades earlier.
Dominic suddenly remembered something.
The private corridor behind it.
Only family members and senior security personnel knew about it.
He looked at Marco.
“Who has access to that hallway?”
“Yourself.”
“Ethan?”
“No.”
“Me?”
Marco nodded.
“Your mother?”
“She has a key.”
Dominic's expression changed.
His mother had died six years earlier.
Then who else?
Marco checked his tablet.
“There are three active access codes.”
Dominic waited.
“Yours.”
“Mine?”
“Your mother's old code.”
Dominic frowned.
“And the third?”
Marco hesitated.
“Your brother's.”
The room seemed to become colder.
Dominic's younger brother, Adrian, had been dead for eight years.
Or so everyone believed.
Dominic slowly turned.
“That's impossible.”
Marco looked at the screen.
“The code was used tonight.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily tugged on Dominic's jacket.
“Mr. Moretti?”
He looked down.
“What?”
“I know that man.”
Dominic crouched.
“The man with the silver box?”
She nodded.
“Where?”
Lily pointed toward the family portrait.
“He talked to someone before he went into the kitchen.”
“Who?”
She looked around the room.
Then pointed.
“Uncle Adrian.”
Dominic's blood ran cold.
There was no Adrian in the ballroom.
Because Adrian Moretti was supposed to be dead.
Dominic looked at Marco.
“Lock the mansion down.”
Marco immediately reached for his radio.
Dominic picked up Ethan.
His son wrapped his arms around his neck.
“Dad?”
Dominic looked toward the hidden corridor.
“Stay with me.”
Behind the family portrait, something suddenly slammed against the wall.
Everyone jumped.
Dominic's security team drew their weapons.
Marco pulled the portrait aside.
The narrow passage was empty.
But on the floor lay a single photograph.
Dominic picked it up.
It showed his younger brother.
Adrian.
Alive.
Standing beside a newborn Ethan.
On the back was a handwritten message.
YOU SAVED THE WRONG SON.
Dominic stared at the words.
Then he heard a soft voice behind him.
Lily.
“He's coming back.”
Dominic turned.
“What did you say?”
The little girl looked toward the dark hallway.
“He told me he would come back for the boy.”
Dominic tightened his grip around Ethan.
For the first time that night, fear replaced anger.
Because whoever had planned the attack hadn't been trying to kill Ethan immediately.
They had been sending Dominic a message.
And the message was clear.

Someone inside his family wanted his son.
Alive.
